my mom needs music
« on: August 24, 2008, 01:27:44 am »

My mom's a teacher and has to do some crap with music for the first day of school. Two Three* of the songs she wants I don't have, so I'm wondering if somebody out here could hook me up with an mp3 for:

The Beatles - Help
Bon Jovi - Who Says You Can't Go Home?
Kenny Loggins - Footloose

Help she actually has on vinyl, but it seems like a lot of work to go get the record, bring it to my apt, record it as a wav, and encode that into mp3 when I'm sure 2/3 of the board members already have it electronically.

I swear I had Footlose, but don't see it. Huh.

You do not understand the sheer awesomeness of Bon Jovi.

Quote from: Wikipedia
Jon Bon Jovi was born John Francis Bongiovi, Jr., in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, the son of two former marines,[2] hairdresser John Francis Bongiovi, Sr. and one-time Playboy bunny Carol Sharkey.

He is the child of a hairdresser, a Playboy Bunny and two -- count them, two -- Marines. That's like Gilgamesh, who's two thirds divine, because he probably had three parents.

Understand how awesome it is to be raised by that family. "Don't let the other boys call you a queer, son, cause you know you're not, and that's all you need to know. Look at me: They call me queer cause I like to style hair and my middle name is Francis, but I killed 30 men in Korea and married this hot piece-o-ass here, who killed 30 more men! Now go feather your hair and kick some ass, son!"

That's like self-esteem radness. Bon Jovi is like Son Of Zohan.

This CD is getting really annoying. Other than those 3 songs, which everybody in her grade is using, she has to come up with the rest herself. I keep trying to suggest songs I already have, but she keep shooting down all my suggestions because the kids won't be familiar with them. She wants songs "the kids will know", like Taking Care of Business and the theme from Welcome Back, Kotter. Which went off the air 2 months before I was born.

Try hypem.com (hype machine), which aggregates posts from MP3 blogs. It's pretty painless. Several of the songs mentioned (including Taking Care of Business and Welcome Back, Kotter) are on there, assuming the blogs are still hosting them.

How old are these kids? I would suggest "We're all in this together" from HS Musical, "YMCA" by the village people, and there are a ton of motown songs that are ubiquitous and I have hundreds of motown tracks on my computer.

This may be specific to my primary school, but even though it was ancient history by our standards tweren't none of us that didn't love some Grease soundtrack action. I would like to believe this is still the case.

She teaches second grade, so 7 or 8.

One of the other teachers suggested We're All in This Together, which neither my mom or I had heard of.

I keep suggesting songs that fit the tone/lyrics that she's asking for, but she shoots them down. Like she wants a happy kind of fast/poppy song for the beginning of the day to get them awake and ready to learn. So I suggested Energy by The Apples in Stereo. She says no because they kids won't know it. Well, who says they have to already know they song? If you play it ever damn morning for 185 days they'll get to know it.

So she wants Welcome Back, Kotter or Taking Care of Business. Not that I can't get those songs for her, but how will the kids know them? She claims the kids will know Bon Jovi, BTO, &c through their parents, but I'm not so sure. I think it boils down to her only wanting songs that she knows, which in her mind are songs that everybody knows.

We're All in this Together is from High School Musical. Every kid in the world knows this song. They use it at every Y and  Summer program too. It's poppy and energetic and has the perfect message for starting the school day. It's a disney song. It's everywhere. Even I can handle it once a day.

I suggest also finding out what station is disney radio in your market. You'll hear a ton of songs that age group knows that you never heard of.

for songs kids know check also

Jonas Brothers
Cheetah Girls
Vanessa Hudgens
Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana
Jordan Prewitt
Naked Brothers Band
Miranda Cosgrove

Thank Rebecca my nine-year old daughter for this partial list.

I appreciate the suggestions but the problem is my mom won't use those songs because she doesn't know them. I've tried suggesting stuff I own that fits the sound she's asking for, other teachers have told her they're using HS Musical and other stuff like you mentioned and even offered to loan her the CDs to copy, and I've even listed the real versions of stuff on Kidz Bop CDs. But mom shoots them all down as being inappropriate or "not something everyone would know." Basically she's only accepting songs that are at least 25 years old or were on Dancing with the American Idols because that's the only music she knows.

The whole thing is also a recipe for disaster because she can't even work a CD player. She always complains the buttons aren't labeled because she can't remember that a square means stop, triangle means play, &c.

So she teaches kids but she's not remotely in touch with what they're into? That sounds challenging.

Totally. She used to use me and my friends to help her with that stuff. Like one year she wanted to draw a Power Ranger on the class rules sign, but didn't know which one was the leader or even which ones were male. I was already about 6 years too old for Power Rangers but had seen enough ads to know it was the red one. Now I'm way too old to help her with that kind of stuff so she's on her own.

With the music I think it's also a function of her being terrified of playing something inappropriate. And for some reason she thinks any songs written before the 80's are automatically clean. While previewing some songs several times my dad and I had to point out why songs she was considering wouldn't be good. This involved us explaining to her why such phrases as "down on a muff", "contact high", and "puff the magic dragon" should not be used in a school setting. Well, that last one you could probably get away with.

I'm a little hesitant of using the Disney stuff. I wouldn't know myself but I've heard from coworkers with kids that Hannah Montana is on the way out and would just make the boys cover their ears and complain. And I really don't want to go through this again halfway through the year because the kids have decided the Jonas Brothers or whatever aren't cool anymore. I think using songs they aren't already barraged with would actually be better, since they're less likely to get tired of them. But then I know crap about children.

Over e-mail I've at least gotten her to consider some stuff from TMBG's kids album. She likes Clap Your Hands.

I realize that everybody else on the forum is thinking, "jesus, is he still talking about this?" But I've spent 2-3 hours a day since Saturday on the phone with my mom playing songs and looking up lyrics. I'm pretty tired of the whole thing.

Damn. You're a good son.

My mom's a elementary school librarian. I fob this stuff off to my younger brothers.

Only child.

Some day I'd like to see some kind of statistical work-up on the percentage of only children that aren't adopted. Just from my experience it's got to be way low.
