Really, though, I feel like americans love idealism but also hate radicalism.
Cf successful or popular communist/socialist parties in european countries, radical leftist groups, etc.

Yeah probably something to that, radical is all relative though. Plenty of right wing politicians over there at least pay lip service to ideas about abortion and the death penalty that would be fairly radical in a lot of other places.
Maybe it's just the vocal minority thing?
