Don't think I haven't tried.  It breaks my heart, but the boy just won't listen.  I can't even get him to give Green Day a spin.

Truly, what is wrong with young people.
At least until they hit 12 you get a great chance to affect their taste.
But no Green Day? Man all you have to hear is Chump segueing into Longview!

Man, "Dookie" was my youthful rebellion music (mitigated only by the fact that Mom liked having it in the car). What's happening to kids today?!

Bah. I feel old.

Pearl Jam was my youthful rebellion music.  I'm sort of ashamed of that.  I was into good stuff like NIN, Bob Dylan and Ani Difranco, but I had an exteme love of Pearl Jam, and I only really jumped on the Nirvana band wagon after Kurt died, which is extra embarassing.  Also I dressed like Courtney Love a lot.  And also sometimes like a goth chick.

The Sex Pistols and the Dead Kennedys were my youthful rebellion music, and it warms my heart to see kids today not liking them, thinking that what they made was just "noise".

I mean, kids today like things slick and over-produced.  They hate the Clash.  They listen to pop instead of Iggy Pop, and the only song they know of the latter is "Lust for Life," and not because it was in Trainspotting but because it's the soundtrack for a Disney Cruises tv advert (although they leave out the "liquor and drugs" line).

Fuckers.

August, you're still older than even I, though, so while they can make ME feel old I can still make YOU feel old.

I wonder who the oldest fucker on the board is....

I never really considered Dead Kennedys, Husker Du, Fugazi, all the US punk that I listened to from back when I was a youngun, a rebellion. I guess because there was really nothing to rebel against where I used to live. It was only around '94 that I had anything to pissed off about, and then I tended to rebel whilst listening to NIN, Ministry or Kyuss. And much else.

And I am always appalled at the overproduction of music nowadays. Some producers get it just right - Paul Leary, Reznor, Rubin (sometimes), but most of the time it is just an hideous amalgam of soft, soothing sounds put together to sound like either pop, or supposedly rock.

I had the strangest conversation at the last conference I worked on, one of the professors (well, I ended up jamming every night with 3 of them, all  70's rock and blues), the most unlikely guy, who for instance doesn't allow his kids to watch TV (a good move I know) and always seems so nice about everything, turned out to be the biggest Clash freak ever. He'd been to see them a few times, and hot into Jim Jarmusch through his film with Strummer. So we ended up spending an evening talking about The Clash and similair great music of the era.
Anyway, enough of my over-bored rambling...

Slink, you're so close to the next user rank that the kids are all looking to you to show them what's next.

And I'm going to go over 1,000 soon.  Yikes.

Aaaah. In which case this will have to be my last post ever!

Well. I'll at least hit the next rank before I give you a paypal donation and have to come up with something next week (just waiting for me paycheck to come through so I don't hit my overdraft).

Is it sad that when I was around 14, all I listened to was rap (mostly 2pac, Master P, Dr. Dre, etcetc)?  to win over a boy I had a crush on?!  it didn't even work either and I was so disappointed that I had wasted all those years listening to rap till he moved my sophmore year ...argh.  the reason I got so behind on good music :)

At least I never entirely -rebelled- ..I mean, yes, some rap is rather intense with the cursing, sexual content, violence, etcetc, but me and my friend put our energy towards making a parody radio station out of it all where I get shot a lot between commercial breaks and such ..that was more fun than angst filled ;D

---

I am glad I don't plan to have kids.  see, my musical tastes lately are rather elitist and well, it would about kill me if the kid ended up liking some horrible new pop act or some such ..of course, who knows what'll be "in" in the future honestly.

Before you make generalizations about my generation....

I started screaming at the TV when I first (and subsequently) saw that spot.  "It's Iggy!  Those lyrics are from William Burroughs!  And now it's endorsing Disney!  Aaugh!"

So I'm not really in agreement with making these broad judgements, though god knows I spend enough time decrying my peers for being utter fuck*ng vapid wastes of skin, especially as far as taste in music is concerned.  I consider myself a music geek, I listen to obscure indie as a point of pride, and I like to know things (namely, everything) about what I listen to, I constantly try to find music to listen to that I've never heard of, and generally I have attitudes towards music that are, I've observed, fairly unusual for my age.

So while there is a huge repulsive mass of morons listening to their simple simple moron music, there's also, even at my small-town high school, some musical diversity.  Mind you, the only people I really communicate with are the subcultural types, but there's a cello-genius prog rocker, some metal-listening guys, a few classical guitarists, two indie rockers, some fairly convincing punks, and a fairly large subset of people who listen to obscure techno/trance.

At the risk of writing the longest post ever (it's already my longest), I very much agree with the majority of you regarding punk... I find it utterly perplexing what's called punk these days and it wouldn't be entirely out of character for me to rail bitterly about what the hell is this crap and why are they listening to this when there's Stiff Little Fingers, the Buzzcocks, the X-Ray Spex, and tonnes of other rad genuine punk kicking around.

"Is that the new Green Day?"

I was so impressed, when I discovered my mom (who likes stuff like Kyuss, Desert Sessions, Chris Cornell, QotSA, Sublime, NIN and Masters of Reality) turned out to like The Buzzcocks too.
It gives me hope that good taste may be genetic in my family, since my brother has pretty much the same taste in music as me, and when he doesn't, I play him it and he gets into it. Only he ahs enough money to seriously collect albums!
If he wasn't so busy/lazy I'd be able to get far more copies of cds.

See, this is why I'm going to have to marry a fellow dork. If we set up a united front of They Might Be Giants in the home, our kids are either going to have to comply or revolt in a really disgusting, scary, Snoop-Dogg-related way that I'll at least be able to laugh off.

And then once you've got on who's got great taste, if you have another kid 6 years later, they're likely to inherit the others taste. If they get on at all that is.
Story of my life.
