Did you know...
that someone should really go fix up the Achewood Wiki, the Achewiki, which could serve as a knowledge base for all things Achewood?

As a Southerner, I must say they have captured life in Dixie to a T, with the exception of the penguin.

Oh my.

So many questions.

But the first is, aren't they both supposed to be playing banjos?

Perhaps they are spiritual banjos. Or hideous mutant banjos. Either or.

Actually, that's the irony of "Dueling Banjos:" yes, indeed, one's a banjo, but the song was written at the time of the onset of the guitar over the banjo in American western music, and it was written as propaganda for the guitar. Therefore, it was written as a banjo-like tune meant to be played on the guitar, then the second (banjo) part was added as the "challenger" (the first instrument to play, and the loser) as a piece of a story arc.

All this is from an oral history I took as a student of music at my college in Asheville, N.C.

I thought the guitar/banjo thing was the whole point, as Choopernickel has much more eruditely pointed out.

(Fascinating "Dueling Banjos" trivia)

Wow, I learned something new. And to think I thought the Achewood board could only teach me about alcohol and stuffed animals.

No, not UNC-A. Warren Wilson College, where I am no longer anywhere near welcome.

Writing as my senior letter a seventeen-page assessment of the internal espionage led by the dean of students, the idiotic structure of the "Triad" of education (Class, Work, and... oh, yeah, let's add a *tiny little bit* of Service), and various and sundry other little exposés kind of un-endeared me to most everyone on campus.

Funny little addendum: at graduation, the Dean of Academics read out each graduate's name, then the Dean of Students handed the degree to said student as they marched across the stage. Well, the Dean of Academics read my name and handed me my degree, as the Dean of Students had backed completely away from me at that point.  I love rocking the boat sometimes. :)

This is absolutely awesome. Perhaps, if I start working very hard, I can un-endear myself to my entire college, too!

(The scary thing is that I know a guy who's already done this here. He's off-campus at the moment, but he's only got sophomore standing. It is almost impressive in a horrible way.)

I am persona non grata at my alma mater, and I found out last month when I visited for the first time since I graduated to attend a poetry reading that not only have all of the youngsters heard of me, but that what they've heard was wildly exaggerated.

I mean, I really don't think that six or seven people could be considered an "orgy" by any stretch of the imagination.  And using the budgets of several school organisations of which I was an officer to hold dinner parties (i.e. working meetings... with food and bevs) is hardly "embezzling."

And slitting one frat boy's throat could only by the wildest stretch of the imagination be considered a "kill-crazy rampage."

These kids get all kinds of odd ideas.  Still, it's nice to be remembered.

Williams actually had an insane discussion about this precise question last year -- something about the College Council taking its entire membership to the local Thai place on vague "business" and paying for it out of the student activity fund... one thing I've learned at college is that giving any entirely-student-run regulatory body more money than about ten bucks will result in either a) this splitting of hairs over what constitutes "embezzlement" or b) actual gross embezzlement.

I also bought everyone's text books with money from one of the clubs one semester.

The problem was that since we won a national award for the publication of which I was editor-in-chief our budget increased five-fold, yet we didn't really need anything more than about double our budget to put out what looked like a professionally printed thin paperback novel.

If we didn't use the money we'd lose it, and our budget would be curtailed the following year.  The trick, I found, to getting an annual budget increase is to over-spend every year by a little bit - a few hundred dollars.  The school would have to pay the printer bills for our publication and take it out of the following year's budget.

I believe I invented the idea of the budget deficit for student organisations.  But I was told that they still follow my code book for exploiting the student funds.

And heck, we all paid into the fund anyway.  And the administrators knew what we were doing, which was stretching, rather than breaking the rules (although that text book thing which we claimed were for the club library was stretching things - but most of us left the books behind for others in the club to use or sell anyway).

I think I usually sold mine back to the bookmobile though.  So I guess that was terribly terribly wrong.
