Supposedly the comment was made in discussion with an ABC crew after he had said "Off the record".  The nearby CNBC crew who had their recorders going didn't feel bound by his statement, since he was talking to a different crew.

Really, wouldn't there be something wrong with a person who never called someone a jackass in private? I'm not sure I'd want that person to be president.

He does need to get a better handle on what 'private' means when you are president, though.

"Jackass" isn't even a bad word. It means donkey. If you think it has something to do with asses, like butts, then examine that. How do you jack an ass? You can jack a dick, you can jack a tire, you can jack a Lexus. But you cannot jack an ass, in any way.
