The ribosome discovery was worthy of acknowledgement.  Maybe the "test of time" criterion should apply to the Peace Prize award.  That would have ruled out Arafat at least.

But Arafat was a bad actor when they gave it to him.  Wombat is right, the award is a fuck*ng joke.

The science awards always sound more reasonable, but of course I have no way of judging, and mostly the journalists who report on them don't either, so who knows. I am confident that Jaydub is right about ribosome, though.

I am skeptical of awards in general except those MacArthur genius grants, which also are awarded to people you've never heard of, but they're so often really cool people you've never heard of, or cool people you've heard of that no one else seems to know about. The MacArthur grants are like reading a much, much more clever blogger's top ten list.

I wasn't even saying he doesn't deserve it or anything and obviously there's no objective standard for these people to use, I was just weirded out because I see them more as 'life time achievement' type awards. I guess my view of them is coloured because I'm mainly aware of the science ones when the award tends to get given like 10 or 20 years after you've done your ground breaking work, not while you're meant to be in the middle of doing it.
