One more thing, deja - are you or were you a fan of The Far Side? If the answer is "no," I'll say no more. But I really can't imagine how someone who did/does enjoy Larson's work could not find a lot to like about PBF. It's basically The Far Side on PCP.

Well, now that I've written that it dawns on me that one thing missing from PBF in regards to Far Side comparisons is subtlety. I guess I could see that.

Hey, you asked ^^

I'll have to come back to you on The Far Side, though. Was that a TV show?

(Wikipedia tells me that it isn't. It seems some investigation is in order.

By the way, are you familiar with that old battlehoss, The Parking Lot Is Full? IIRC, it was a bit on this PBF vibe [only, I remember it fondly]).

This absolutely should in no way be taken as an insult, but you're not from around "here," are you? Please do yourself a favor and investigate. It is indisputably among the best comics ever to be released in any medium and from any time in history. It's nothing short of genius and very consistently so.

(Oh, wow, it's so awesome to have the chance to maybe turn someone on to The Far Side. That hasn't happened since, like, the third grade!)

P.S. I will check out Parking Lot is Full.

Deja is Brazilian - hence the slight culture gap.

You fooled another one into thinking you're a native English speaker, Deja! How does that feel?

Aw, what's so awful about Unshelved?
Quote from: Chump Change on November 18, 2009, 12:36:39 am
Unshelved is basically Library Dilbert

I confess I still read Dilbert. Only because it's right there easy to find in the newspaper - I wouldn't go out of my way to find it. But I still read it.

There's not much competition as far as workplace humor I guess. You'd think it would be a rich vein to mine.

Oh man, back in the day Dilbert was ace. Some of the best deranged concepts (Floyd the remora) and similes ("he dresses like a flood refugee") ever...

Old Dilbert was indeed very funny. I still get a chuckle thinking about the one character rationalizing never washing his bathtowel:

"When I get out of the shower I am the cleanest thing in my house. Therefore, my towel can only get cleaner each time I use it."

Old Dilbert was good. Old Unshelved was good too.

But both strips are now phoning it in and (successfully) coasting on familiar tropes and niche appeal.

OK. I'll concede that old Dilbert was pretty OK by newspaper standards (not sayin' much, but whatever). But let me say this again - I work in a library. You have no idea how much of Unshelved I have been exposed to. Trust me, I fuck-ing hate it. I'm not guessing on this.

Totally off-topic, but let me ask - I once noticed that someone (I think jay-ell) used some kind of bbcode to get around some of these filters. What is that? For example, she was able to say A I U without spacing the letters or having it end up as Shithead. I think she just did it like A[some bb tage]I[/some bb tag]U and it showed up just as it should.

It's Help a Noob Day. Help a Noob. These fuck*ng filters are for the giraffes.

Also: Just like Onstad, Scott Adams isn't what you would call a... resourceful artist, and yet he shows great sense for design. He hit it pretty big with Dogbert's design (among others), like Onstad did, I think, with Philippe. Few, clean lines, instantly recalled; simply classic.

Oh, I'm fine with Adams' art. It's the humor that leaves me wanting more.
