It begins. End of the decade lists
« on: November 23, 2009, 04:03:12 pm »

eMusic just put the up the final segment of their top 100 albums of the decade list. I own 10.5 of them (I only got a few of tracks of Cat Power's) which sounds like a really low number.

And The Strokes at number 1? Really?

yeah, I think I have for once in my life reached a zen-like state of "oh, that is what this list says is best, go figure."

Although it's weird to think that people actually like the strokes as much as all of these lists indicate. I like them, but until recently I thought of them firmly in the category of "bands I heard on alt-rock radio when i was in middle school."

Also, the first time I heard the word "hipster" was in reference to fans of the strokes. I thought about what that word might mean, and decided that my friend Sarah was a hipster.
I don't think she was then, but she sure as shit is now. Hoo boy.

As time goes on, I place a much higher value on sincerity and enthusiasm in art.  Pretension and boredom are the antitheses of these qualities, and are completely summed up in The Strokes.  Never before has one talented band given less of a shit simply because giving a shit isn't cool.  Fuck that noise.

Aaaaand thank you for saving me the trouble of so much as clicking that link. I agree that Is This It should be somewhere on there (probably around the low 80s or something - it was sort of "important" in its way), but that's not a good sign. I'll have to think about what my list would be. I guess that's what this thread will be about, obviously. Just off the top of my head without really thinking about it, I'd have to imagine that The Flaming Lips' The Soft Bulletin and Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea are gonna be hanging around somewhere high up in the top five.

Fuck. Both from the '90s. This'll take some thought, then.

I own 21 of the albums on the eMusic list.

eMusic's list are always "Top ___ albums that eMusic distributes," so you have to take 'em with a grain of salt.

Considering I acquire 1, maybe 2, non-eM albums per year this isn't an issue for me.

I'm surprised Scale by Herbert didn't make the list. They had a huge hard-on for that album when it came out. And it is pretty good.

i hate entire albums because i only end up liking 3-5/12 tracks, so if i cop to liking the album, its unusual.  thats why i steal music so much.  although, i have eased up since discovering that amazon DLs are so cheap.

top albums for me:

Popaganda-Head Automatica
I Get Wet-Andrew W.K.
MTV Unplugged 2.0-Dashboard Confessional
MTV Unplugged-Julieta Venegas--------->limon y sal

I couldn't help but make up a little list of my own. Lists and music are both obsessions of mine, so it basically had to happen. I made a top 100, but I won't subject you all to it. That'll be for my unfortunate facebook friends. Before anybody says anything about the paucity of White Stripes or Yeah Yeah Yeahs entries or whatever, let me say that this is not a "best of" list, per se. These are the albums that changed me in the '00s, whether or not they changed the music world.

20. Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes

19. Lookaftering - Vashti Bunyan

18. Andrew Bird & the Mysterious Production of Eggs - Andrew Bird

17. All Hail West Texas - The Mountain Goats

16. Chutes Too Narrow - The Shins

15. Two Suns - Bat for Lashes

14. You Are Free - Cat Power

13. Dear Science - TV on the Radio

12. Hail to the Thief - Radiohead

11. Fate - Dr. Dog

10. Kid A - Radiohead

9. Alice - Tom Waits

8. Oh, Inverted World - The Shins

7. i - The Magnetic Fields

6. Want One - Rufus Wainwright

5. The Milk-Eyed Mender - Joanna Newsom

4. Amnesiac - Radiohead

3. Bright Flight - Silver Jews

2. Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant - Belle & Sebastian

1. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots - The Flaming Lips

In conclusion, I have to say that at the end of the day the '90s were a slightly better decade for music. But I fully realize that this feeling could just be a product of my age (older, more closed-minded, busier so less time to discover new artists). I don't mean to make light of these and many, many others which dropped in the last ten years. There's some life-changing shit in there, for real.

The 30 best cover songs of the decade.

26. you really got a hold on me-she&him
20. gone daddy gone-gnarls barkley(the video is the shit on toast, man!)
*****7. lithium-polyphonic spree(i dont know how to take this.  the sad heroin-rock song clashes with orchestral/choral-pop styling.  its refreshing and i like it, but it confuses my mind and i dont like it.)
4. hurt-johnny cash

Cash's cover of "Hurt" was good but his cover of Neil Young's "Pocahantas" will blow your nose hairs back.

Near as I can tell, Johnny Cash and Neil Young were put on this Earth to make songs that should be covered by the other.

I know they're not really in Paste's target demo, but Franz Ferdinand has done some pretty amazing covers this decade.  This weekend, I re-listened to their takes on Blondie's "Call Me" and LCD Soundsystem's "All My Friends", and found that the former was a worthy cover and that I like the latter better than the original.

I almost got pissed that Metallica's cover of "Turn the Page" wasn't on the list, until I realized that it came out in '98 and I'm just old.
