Um, JL, you never told us that your husband was gay.

I first saw him on SNL too, and laughed the entire time.  I thought it was one of the funniest skits they'd ever done.  Then I heard that there was an album and that it was a real guy/band.  Huh.

Go figure.

Putting personal feelings aside, I agree with you.  I love Radiohead, but there are many who can't stand them.  The savior must be loved by all (or at least most).  Ultimately he'll be rejected, but not before his work is done.
~Paul

Oops, I forgot, you're the big Radiohead fan on this site. I apologize for being obnoxious.

The Bends is a great album, and I loved OK Computer to death.  It was rare to find a band that not only knew how to write great rock songs but also did something different with guitars. Seeing them in '97 at the Wiltern was an absolutely amazing experience.

So when they followed up with two albums that had maybe three great songs between them and almost no guitars, I maybe bummed out a little.  Especially when everyone else treated them like they were, er, saviors or something.  If I want to listen to a bunch of electronic beeping I'll put on my Aphex Twin record.  I haven't even bothered with Hail to the Thief yet.

Dokken.  Radiohead.

He's not, he's a actor.  You know, college theatre and all that...hey, wait a minute...

I kind of dread the thought of liking someone everyone else likes, just because I know the awful cack that sells more than anything I listen to.

It's rare, but it happens.  About once a generation there is an artist that stands clearly head and shoulders above the rest and is loved by all.

I'm glad it wasn't a skit because it would have recurred 10 times by now and been made into a movie.

Me to my man: Why are you buying that Andrew WK CD?  Don't buy that CD.  You can't possibly actually want to listen to it.

Him (less than a month later): Even the used music store won't buy this Andrew WK CD, I'll just leave it here on this dumpster lid.

Ya see, I'm in the camp that loves Kid A/Amnesiac.  It would easily be their best except for the fact that OK Computer is one of the greatest albums ever made.  I'm only slowly warming up to The Bends.  It's good, but Pablo Honey is meh, ok, I guess.

Hail to the Thief is in the OK Computer vein, but not as good.

I think the creepiest thing about Andrew WK is his earnestness -- apparently he is the only one not in on the joke, despite his being the joke. He has an interview in The Tenacity of the Cockroach, the collected Onion A.V. Club interviews, in which he honestly appears to believe he is some sort of musical Messiah figure of rock. How does this even work? How can one think of oneself this way? Even Gene Freakin' Simmons manages more self-understanding than that.*

Part of me wishes for a rock messiah, but part of me realizes I probably wouldn't like him anyway and would still just listen to my R.E.M. and Fruvous and stuff. (Part of me wholeheartedly believes that New Adventures in Hi-Fi was the rock-messiah record, but nobody noticed.)

* So I'm exaggerating a little. One thing I will admire Gene Simmons for is that he appears to be entirely in on his own joke, and that I can respect.

I am a big Radiohead fan (they're my favourite still extant band) and I thought Hail to the Thief was one of their best, right after "OK Computer" in my book.

Kid A was good but uneven.  Amnesiac was mostly pretty bad, with a few flashes of goodness thrown in.

The Bends is the best pop record of the 90s, and their first album was practically a grunge record.  I mean, they were lumped in there with Pearl Jam and Nirvana back when "Creep" was the big single.

LOOK HOW FAR THEY HAVE COME AS ART-ROCK WEIRDOS NOW

All this Hail to the Thief stroking up in this thread is seriously making me consider running right out and downloading it, even though I'm not sure my personality would remain Sufferable after another orgiastic Radiohead binge.

Both grew on me; the first five notes of Kid A I have listened to one thousand times and the emotional impact - that of everything is okay and softly lighted and authoritatively narrated - hasn't yet diminished. It is a thing of comfort. I can't say the same for any Amnesiac track; that album set out to deceive, lull, and unsettle. Both albums were redeemed, I'd think in anyone's eyes, by that Live Recordings disc they put out. I guess that in a live setting they had no choice but to peel away the pretense and admit that they had gone ahead and written another batch of beautiful, human songs.

Jian = sex, yes. My good lord yes. (That said, I also like Murray quite a lot, albeit not for the same reasons.)

Silly Canadians and seeing MF live! Now that I'm finally somewhere where they toured, they apparently aren't doing it anymore. Bah!

From memory I agree with you there, despite my overall disappointment with the album.
And listenign to it again it's still somewhat there. Not quite as I remembered it, in terms of magnitude, but good all the same.
