carrion crawler/the dream is great. Maybe their most coherent album. Even my mean ex liked that album.

the album with the song you didn't like is one of my less favorite albums. But it also had this riff.

Yeahhhhhh roommates.

yes Paul, they did break up, but then the guy who moved away came back. Because San Francisco isn't all it's cracked up to be.

This one's got it all. Cool songs that switch around to different stuff (Holy Ghost/Hunger Hole, and Nervous Conditions), straightforward fun rock music (Onion Rings, Moocher), weird cool spaced-out rockers (Cylindrical, Fruit Tree). Tonight they are playing downtown and then going on a mini-tour (St Louis, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Columbus) to their hometowns.

Rock music!

Ever since it was on Mad Men this is majorly stuck in my head. So uncool, so over the top, so good.

Uncool?  The Vanilla Fudge?  But what about the Mudshark?

Yellow Magic Orchestra - Rydeen

Fun fact: I first became aware of this song via an arcade game about trains.

Sounds like the theme song to an 80s television show.

That Vanilla Fudge song is the 60s version of whiny (hipster?) people doing acoustic covers of rap songs. It's like some people can't understand emotion in musical form without it being expressed in a very particular/limited way. Really, you couldn't understand the emotional content of "Hey Ya" until it was being played by a soulful white dude? You can't understand sad lyrics unless they are sung overdramatically?

I am all for people doing their own versions of songs, but there is a particular way this sometimes manifests that bums me out.

I defended the song on Facebook as pioneering the idea of playing a song in a radically different style (see also  Bobby Darin: Mack the Knife). Now I can see that it should be moved into the "What Have They Wrought" thread. I guess what separates them from today's typical reworking of a pop song is that they were. being sincere whereas most of what I hear today in that regard is far from it.

The acoustic rap cover thing is a little annoying because some of them just seem to stink ever so slightly of irony, condescension and a little self-loathing.

Anyway, here's a white dude what done a mashup of Simon and Garfunkel with Slick Rick.

Non-stop Parquet Courts.

Almost every song on this album is awesome.

The singer looks like a guy my ex dated, and it bothers me way more than it should.

(because it should bother me zero).

So fuck*ng good.

Definitely heavy Pavement vibes.

Also listening to this song on heavy repeat.

I thought "Don't they do 'Best of Friends?'" But in fact I was thinking of Palma Violets.

Paul showed that to is.  It is so fuck*ng good!!!  My favorite part of the album is the song lengths.  They are all the perfect length to be complete but leave you wanting more.

Probably like top 5 "new" albums.
