That's a really good idea. The standard boring advice is to train a sit for greetings, but that's a much better plan for a dog like that.

What I think is that it's important to remember that nearly all problems that people attribute to dominance in dogs have nothing to do with dominance. The popular notion of dominance in dogs is based on thinking and research that has been pretty much entirely discredited.

So I'd consider more practical and simple possibilities first. Does he just do it on those two items? It is possible that they are both so filthy that he's marking them because they smell interesting? Jackets and backpacks rarely if ever get washed. Does he only do it when they are hung in a certain place? Maybe just stop hanging them there. Those sorts of things.

Rose pug is gone. I am pugless for the first time in 16 years (because she wouldn't stand for me adopting the pug I tried to foster a few months ago). Even the vet said "end of an era."
