Hey AugustWest chill out bro I appreciate littlefallsmets comments.  Your attitude is kind of stifling.  What's wrong with some intelligent sociopolitical analysis in the middle of a thread about soccer.  You're really buttressing what littlefallsmets is saying because your intolerance of littlefallsmets' comments combined with your lack of interest in sociopolitical subject matter is the sort of attitude that is the precursor if not the heart of nationalism gone off the deep end.  Sure your argument is valid that maybe some of the people in this thread just don't care about anything other than having some fun talking about soccer, but, why the hostility, why the attempt to enforce what you/them like/want in this thread?  Isn't it better to have a little diversity of ideas, to have one idea fork off into another idea unexpectedly?  You're coming across like me when I'm channeling my inner twit.

Yeah I know AW the irony was not lost on me

i thought that was your default mode.

well it should be but I just haven't been producing as much lately.  I'm in the process of reorganizing my workshop and my life in general.  I want to set myself up with the proper tools to be able to produce with the right kind of intensity.  You know how it is, you reach a point where you've outgrown your studio, your vision no longer fits in this small cramped little space, and you don't want to meet your vision only halfway, so you take a little hiatus while you reorganize, reenergize, and rearm.

Just aside from the... weirdness recent in this thread... which is too mindbending to worry about so late at night:

Baseball makes LOTS of sense with American televised sportscasting.

Sure, it takes a goddamned long time on occasions in terms of timeslot... definitely its one drawback in terms of time-slotting... there's regular half-inning intervals for commercial interruptions, logical camera placements and camera-switching strategies because 95+% of the action happens at homeplate, the pitcher's mound or first base... and even in those few situations where the action is all over the field, the trust of the action still follows logically.

The offense is trying to get the men around the bases, the defense is trying to get the ball back to the bases to create an out.

Now, granted, American football has mutated itself to be THE perfect sport for traditional American television formatting... but other than the issues of just overall chronological length of the game, it is a relatively close second.

have I told you guys that my middle school best friend's dad founded ESPN?

Now he runs a polling company that is known for being really skewed in the conservative direction.

maybe if you get him drunk at a middle school reunion you could get video of him and you having anal sex and then black mail him... his family probably has lots of money and being republicans who knows he might be one of those confused queers who doesn't know they're queer.  probably a queer with really kinky sex desires all that subliminal repression of self identity tends to do a number on them.

Christ, I'm sorry I ever grew up liking football!

For all the issue I could take with you LFM I won't, that's all old ground but I am not going to let you get away with the 'fringe sport' tag. It's down a fair way on the list of America's most widely-followed sports, granted. I still don't see how it can upset you that the single biggest sporting event in the entire world is being shown by ESPN. I'm not the biggest fan of tennis but I can't really get pissy at the BBC for trying to turn us all into tennis fans for a few weeks during Wimbledon, simply because I recognise most people quite like massive sporting events even if they don't normally like it.

Who follows the 100m championships or pole vaulting or clay pigeon shooting whilst the Olympics aren't on? Pretty much no-one. Doesn't mean I begrudge the TV companies for taking these 'fringe sports' and plastering them on the TV 24 hours a day. If I don't like, I don't watch, I certainly don't bitch about it.

just because something is fun and provides positive emotions doesn't mean it isn't also destructive and doesn't come with negative consequences.  you should try to be aware of the consequences of actions.

Not going to argue with you. If I was a perfect person I probably wouldn't let sports work me up the way they do as it is certainly irrational to invest that much emotion into something so relatively meaningless. Positive emotions certainly can be destructive, but hey, it's a short life, I'm sure one more lad following football isn't doing anyone any harm. Without the fun and release football provides I'd probably resort to trolling tiny messageboards on the internet or auto-asphyxiation or something

ANYWAY NONE OF THIS MATTERS

Yeah, not to belabour this (even more) but just for consistency's sake, yes absolutely the vast majority of the Olympics do indeed piss me off for the very same reason.

Curling! For fuck's sake.

NBC needs to make their money back so I'm supposed to be interested in curling!

Well, fair enough I guess. I respectfully request you to make an 'anti-fringe sports' thread though as you're making my World Cup thread all off-topicky and non-football. You can moan about football there if you like.

As we all know, if there's one thing European football fans hate, it is conflict

Even something that's a "niche sport" in the US can still attract a lot of viewers.  We have a lot of people here.  If only 10% of the American public gives a shit about soccer, that's THIRTY MILLION PEOPLE.  That's more than the population of some of the countries still in the World Cup, no doubt.

I wonder why people don't feel compelled to shit on NASCAR the same way they shit on soccer.

it's interesting how the bitching in this thread is read by so many people here as shitting on soccer, when in fact, it is not.  Oh wait, I'm using the wrong verb there... "reading" implies a minimal level of linguistic competence...

Pretty heartbreaking weekend for the soccer fans of this thread. But I'm still excited for another couple weeks of World Cup.

NBC and ESPN dont care that you dont cream your jeans over curling or soccer or long distance-pissing or whatever.  they do not exist to make you happy.
