how do you crossreference four different books on one kindle at the same time. if you're just talking about novels and biographies okay cool, but what about technical guides and travel indices and cookbooks and the like?

plus i don't want to take a several hundred dollar device to such as a beach and risk losing it (theft, damage) versus a ten buck paperback.

I literally have more books than one room can hold. I have covered the wall space of 1 and 3/4 rooms with bookshelves. I can't even pretend to understand ***** god's irrational hatred of books. What the hell am I supposed to do with all these finance and econ textbooks I've been collecting for most of my life? I have like 6 feet of shelf space populated by Ayn Rand books. And even though I've "moved on" from that period of my life, I can't see just tossing them all in the recycle bin like an old newspaper.

Look, I mean, I got a bookshelf too I'm sure everyone does, but I'm just sayin' when I move, which will be soon:  no books on the wall, no paper, no DVDs, no CDs, no excessive trinkets, none of this clutter/crap I have all over, but especially not the outdated crap turned garbage.

But... but... that is what books are for.

Yes, but they are boring decor!

Wow I love you **#** God.  I love you.  Are you female?  Or gay?  Or bicurious?  We should meet.

Oh pshaw.

Old video games.  Magazines.  Sentimental junk.  Electronic gadget boxes.  Old school materials.  A PRINTER THAT I NEVER HOOKED UP ughhh.   Old broken electronics.  I'm surrounded by garbage right now and it's my own fault.  So many of these books I've never read and don't want to.  So many of these DVDs I've never opened.  So many CDs of BAD BAD music that I would rather be drawn and quartered than ever listen to again.  I don't have to be surrounded with crap garbage, and I'm not making this mistake again.  At least I hope I'm not.

I don't hate books!  I just want everyone to realize that books, DVDs, and CDs are outdated.  You can download a torrent program, go to a torrent website, and download all of those things and they don't become clutter in your life.  You can stream movies on like veetle.com or movie2k.com.  Does anyone keep their VHS tapes on a shelf anymore?  Do you still have your cassettes on display?  Everyone must realize that is what's going on!

What I do hate is my ample clutter and decor that says "I settled on the only thing I could think of ^_^"

We don't have to collect garbage anymore, people, be happy about this!!!!

Books are not like VHS tapes and cassettes. You can't watch or listen to those when your player breaks and it's not worth the bother to buy a new one. But you will always be able to read a book. It will work in a power failure, you don't have to remember to charge it up, it will never crash. If you have all your books on one e-reader, what happens when you leave it on the subway or drop it in the toilet?

I mean, definitely SOME books do not need to stick around (Cort's copy of the Iliad, I'm also looking at you). But it is not an obsolete technology like the things you are comparing it to.

Ouch. What did The Iliad ever do to you?

Seriously, no one needs a copy of the Iliad. There is one way in which I actually agree with Robo-God. I have seen people who still have their old college books displayed obviously on bookshelves, which really does seem like nothing but some kind of "I went to college" badge. And it's totally dumb, because the books in many cases are like decades out of date - if you actually did need some reference on the topic, they wouldn't be any good anyway. Those are books that need to die an immediate death.

But to conclude from this that no one should have books on bookshelves, man, take a deep breath and calm down.

Don't you people get it????  I made the call.  You are freed!  You should be happy about this, the future is now.

Look, the call is made, I knew it would be controversial but... sorry, there is no taking it back now.  Put every bookcase in your house on flash drive.  No excuses.

I quite enjoyed the Fagles translations of The Iliad and The Odyssey. I recently bought his Aeneid but haven't gotten to it yet. I also got that version of Beowulf that everybody was mad about like 10 years ago but I haven't read it yet, either. I wish I could read faster.

I'm with the professor on this one.

I'm not a collector or anything, and I don't keep my books displayed prominently - they're not decor. But I prefer reading from pages instead of screens. I've got my great-grandfather's antique bookcase in my office and it's filled with books I love and cherish and regularly use, and I'm not going to apologize for that.

I don't like Owning Things, and if I'm going to engage myself with a piece of fiction or a passing topic of interest, I'd just as soon have it in a digital format so I don't have to store it. But as a writer and a one-time academic, there are a lot of  books I need access to at a moment's notice that aren't available as eBooks in any form. I've also got a collection of out-of-print teen mystery books from my childhood that I am saving for my own children because they're not readily available on paper should I decide to chuck them now and re-buy them later. Not everything has a digital equivalent, and some books are irreplaceable.

I'm somewhere in the middle here.

I love books, I love having some ideas in that particular consumption format, there are certain books I would never get rid of. However, I would basically never display my books prominently in my living space. I do not want to seem like the kind of person who puts books out on display to either push their ideas on everyone in that room and/or I do not ever want to seem like the kind of dude who is putting books out on display to tell everyone that I am smart or something.

I am not saying that is why you guys and girls... or even the majority of people... do this. I am not saying that. I am simply saying that I am afraid of being perceived that way. I will keep my small hoarde of books on shelves in the bedroom or my private workroom or maybe some boxes in the attic/basement.\

ALSO: When the day comes that I am published and/or produced for my writing, I could never be that dude with framed covers/posters/pictures of myself on display.

Doing that in a small way probably isn't that bad in many cases but... again... there are kinds of people who do that wherein I would be totally afraid of getting lumped in with them. Oh man.

I used to frame covers to send to authors when I worked at a publisher. Every author got one.
