The rest of them are trying to do something very difficult at the highest level available to them...and the pot of gold for them is the degree they can get out of it or just plain old having a smoking college time of it.

I seem to remember you and I talking about this before, but it may be my imagination. My (admittedly somewhat limited) experience is that a lot more than 2% of those folks think it's going to work out for them.

Yeah, my example math up there has it at 4%, but even if it's as high as 10%, so what? It's a ridiculously small minority of the total group.

In fact, let's say it is 10% of the athletes that are viewed as blue-chip difference makers worth a recruiting violation or three...and 5% of those are getting the attention of the "financial advisers" and "training experts" kooking to pimp them to the next level...the vast majority of the issue here lies well outside of the athletes and with the real people and institutions that stand to gain from them.

We are in total agreement here. One thing I never understood is why I could work for the uni I attended and get paid for it and they couldn't.

Looks like TCU will probably get jumped. That was a beat down.

I was stunned by the thrashing that Stanford handed to the Bears yesterday.  Has Cal's star actually fallen that far?

Didn't quite make the leap, but close.

Also, what the fuck is Jeff Sagarin's problem? He has BSU ranked behind Arkansas! Is he getting his computer ranking from an Osborne?

There are people who believe that a college football team can only be good if it is from the Deep South.

It is sort of the "intelligent design" of sports.

You know it's just a mathematical algorithm, right?  He's not doing any handicapping other than plugging the scores into the formula.

Well, there's something like eight computer scores, and his is the only one that ends up like this on a consistent basis, and it's based on his algorithm. So fuck him. I mean, you could make an algorithm that said nonstandard turf color = -14 points, and it'd just be an algorithm.

Yeah yeah, everybody's against you.  Nobody takes you seriously.  Blah blah blah.

If they were any good they'd be in a real conference.

All the rest of you are just afraid!

I actually like it this way, sort of. This way all the big conference fans can say things like that, and then they get beat, and it's even worse for them than losing to a "real" team.

Boise State president responds to Ohio State slam

Quote from: BSU President Bob Kustra
"The formula these days for BCS teams is get seven or eight home games, play one non-conference game against a team from another BCS league, schedule three or four patsies and try not to leave the state if you can help it."

Quote from: OSU President Gordon Gee
Gee said that it was some of the quirkier moments in the BCS which made it endearing. He cited 2007 when Ohio State lost its final home game of the season to drop to eighth in the BCS rankings, then benefited from a long series of upsets to make it into the national championship game, where they lost to LSU 38-24.

“You know, it’s a mystery,” Gee said. “We were No. 1 then No. 11 then No. 7 and we ended up playing for the national championship. I think I kind of like that mixed-up mystery.”

Do they offer a Ph.D in Oversensitivity at Boise State, or is that just a Masters program?

It's not actually a major.

Oversensitivity is a concentration within the more generalized Butt-Hurt doctorate programme.

I wish our president handled things with aplomb the way our coach does. That guy is fantastic.

Also, nice game by Auburn.
