For what its worth, one of my celebrated ancestors stowed away on a cargo ship to escape the British police who were hunting him down in Cork.  He also got paid to take the place of some rich kid in the Union army.

My immigrant ancestors didn't learn the fuck*ng language, actually. Their kids did, thanks to free public schools, but my dad could barely talk to one of his grandmothers because she only spoke Polish.

And she did come here legally, but back in 1914, that basically meant, "Get together some cash, get on a boat, and hope they don't misspell your name too badly at Ellis Island." None of this "get a sponsor" shit or whatever.

Another interesting tale from that side of the family -- my great-grandfather and his brother came over in the early 1910s -- family lore says they were trying to avoid being drafted into the Polish army --- and they both served in WWI (drafted into the the US Army). They both survived and were granted citizenship alongside their discharge papers.

Things aren't that simple now, I guess.

How is this not a policy everyone can agree on.

Don't get me wrong America is a wonderful country and Americans are by and large wonderful people and I can point to lots of other countries with deeply ingrained nationalism and casual racism, but trying desperately not to offend anyone is not something that I think this specific person has ever tried to do.

Then there's this posted on Facebook this morning from a staunchly liberal friend.

Quote
I had a weird thing happen teaching my Industrail Revolution History lesson yesterday.  We were discussing event during that time period and the Mexican-American War came up.  Students asked, "Who won?" and I said, "The US." and several responded, "AH mannnnn!" with dissapointment.  I was shocked and asked, aren't you proud to be American?  They said, "NO, I'm MEXICAN."

This led to a lenthy discussion about being Mexican American is still AMERICAN. And I went on to explain that MANY MANY Hispanics/Mexicans (we had to define Hispanic) fought with Texans in 1836 at the Alamo and in the 1840's with the US.  I really don't think they got it.  I have heard people complain about this kind of attitude but had never in all these years of teaching actually expereienced it.  It was really weird and dissapointing.

I really thought that people in Arizona were over reacting to the immigrant problem, but with a couple experiences like this I can see why people would feel that way.  I mean seriously, even when I am visiting another country I show their history and culture respect. I didn't go to Argentina and start spouting off about the Falklands and how England kicked their butts.  Obviously the parents of these kids who are a getting a fairly decent education from ME, are not teaching their children to appreciate this great country that is helping support them.  I don't blame the kids, they just refect what parents are teaching.   I am not against immigrants, but if you come here to enjoy the benefits of our culture then you should show some appreciation.  And if you don't, well then it should come as no surpize when people start questioning your reasons for being here.

I was thinking about this sort of stuff all day yesterday, amidst the blare of Fox News from every available TV. I really wish this shit wasn't actually happening.

I was recently taking in a Canadian news program that was discussing the large amount of anti-Islamic sentiment used in the pre-election rhetoric in the US.  There were plenty of clips from Fox and elsewhere, where politicians were constantly speaking of some concept of an American as a person devoid of any cultural or spiritual background beyond the generic anglo-Christian.  It brought me back to my Canadian high school social studies class, where we were taught the analogy that the US functions like a melting pot, whereas Canada functions like a tossed salad.   It got me wondering if the US is on the cusp of and identity crisis - I mean if you bring in socialized medicine and consider treating the experiences of new Americans as valid, you're not a melting pot anymore.  If a country is semi-comfortable with voting in a president who's entire family line doesn't go back to the Mayflower, is it a melting pot anymore?  More than ever, I think the US is on the cusp of sweeping change.  I mean, two years into the country's first black president - this is the infancy of a change.

The interesting thing pointed out by yee olde CBC was that while the majority of the anti-Islamic sentiment came from the right, that the left never really put forward a strong opposition to the sentiment.  There was even a suggestion by one commentator that Obama's camp has decided to scrap a planned visit to a mosque while he's in Indonesia out of concern for the public image he would put forward if he were to wear the required, mosque-appropriate garb.  It's sort of astounding to me that there's so much silence around this.  When is anyone in a position of power going to nut up and take a public stand against intolerance?  Maybe I'm expecting too much, being from a country who's national broadcaster that puts out over the top socially-conscious-to-the-point-of-silly content.  That sort of blatant intolerance doesn't really fly north of the border.  We're much more polite and apologetic about our bigotry up here... Wait... is that... better?

Watched a thing last night where somebody asked Congressman Steve King of Iowa about "Obama bringing small quantities of Muslims into this country", and he said "I wouldn’t be surprised that that is the real factual basis".

Seriously?

Between that and Obama's $200 million/day trip to India, I just don't know any more.

They let you bring in as many Muslims as you like now, so long as each one is less than three ounces.
