...within the LGBTQ community there are plenty of folks who are part of the community for gender-based reasons unrelated to their sexual orientation, or attracted to all genders or the opposite gender or into kink that is unrelated to gender.

This.

Most people think of me as straight, since I am in a monogamous hetero marriage, but most of those who know that I am also attracted to women call me bi. There are a few prescriptivists who tell me I can't be bi because I am monogamously married to a man, and if I'm not in a position to have sex with women I'm disqualified from using the term. Fuck those people.

I think of myself more as a queer person than bisexual, though, because there's more to my sexuality than just being attracted to both genders. I'm about 60/40 in favor of men, but there are also other dynamics at work that fall outside strict gender lines. For example, I tend to be attracted to androgynous people, and those who defy their biological gender roles (NSFW).

In the past, I've rebelled against expectations for my own gender, but I'm too old and too busy trying to raise my own expectation-defying children to worry about whether people think I'm butch, femme, or somewhere in between. Plus, I've found a niche among nerdy people who are pretty accepting of others' quirks, so I don't feel the need to dress in boy's clothing or dye my hair purple as a way of warning people not to try to put me in a particular category. But I'd consider "queer" to be one of those labels that can go either way -- yes, people sometimes do say it with hatred, but the same can be said of the word "homosexual." If somebody despises a minority group, it doesn't matter what word they use to describe the "other;" the slur comes from the tone and intent, not from the word itself.

Other thoughts: I don't use the n-word. Ever. But, in spite of having two kids who are special-ed students, I sometimes refer to myself as "retarded." It's terrible, I never say it about other people or things, and I cringe every time I hear myself say it, but it was the slur of choice at my elementary school (much more common than "fag) and it's somewhat ingrained.

I mainly use it when I'm struggling with numbers, though, which is maybe apt. I mean, the word means "less advanced than expected for one's age." Well, I can't do math as well as you'd expect a thirty-something year old woman to be able to do. Doesn't that make me a little retarded?

For some reason in the past two weeks I've found myself going back to an old high school slang term for when things don't go right: "aw, butt sex." My ex hated when I said this because she thought people would be offended.

In the community I take part in, it seems the preferred thing these days nomoclature-wise is to use the LGBTQ or sometimes the more extensive LGBTTQ* acronym = Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Two-Spirited with the *= a cavet for "and otherwise identified, alligned or allied with" or something along those lines.

No matter how noble the motivation, this is never going to catch on. You need a word people can use in conversation.

I... I'm just a boring old hetero dude who likes to have sex with women.  But whatever y'all, or anybody else, wants to do sexually is cool with me.

Regarding Paul's thing i'd be more annoyed that god used 'bcuz'. Also note how the only appropriate response to god is feeling shame. Some people just need to love themselves a squidge more.

I've always liked queer over lgbt because the latter is kind of an ugly mouthful to me. Also if we want to extend it to be all inclusive then listing all the different subgroups is going to get long. It also kind of confuses issues of gender and sexuality which is enough of a problem already, but i guess solidarity is important. But I'm a relatively straight white curmudgeon that apparently hates everything today so it's not exactly my call.

It's been in use as the standard term for 15 years in Canada, and as far as I've seen nearly every University of any standing has changed their stream of study formerly known as "Queer Studies" or something similar to "LGBT Studies" years ago.  It's more than caught on.  I think maybe your a little behind on this one wombles.

Maybe she was referring to the LGBTTQ* extension.  Is the asterisk pronounced like ! in the San language?

But do people use it in everyday speech? People outside the community for whom this is a central issue?

Yes... They do.  Like on the mainstream tv news and in conversation amoung average tolerant people. I think this might be one of those thing were Canada is different.  Keep in mind same-sex marriage has been legal around my parts since 2003, and Canada as a whole is more far along when it comes to LGBTQ acceptance.  I'm thinking this is sort of along the lines of how it's normal in the US to call aboriginal people Indians while in Canada the term is out-dated (and in the case of Indian) offensive.  Seriously - "queer" went out of popular use in the 90's here.  It's not a particularly offensive term, but it's really dated and not commonly used that much in common parlance.

I would say that in my circles (well, at home) queer is much more common in common parlance, whereas the extended version is more common in writing.

I don't think I've heard anyone call a Native American an "Indian" in...20 years?  On the other hand, I live in an area with a very significant proportion of the population originating from South Asia, so maybe we're just avoiding confusion.

I don't really think African American or Native American are good terms, but I guess they are the best option.

I like living in a world where we can debate this and there can be a billion-dollar sports franchise called the Redskins.

Wait, I'm not sure I used the right word in that sentence.

I don't think so either.... and yet I live in Redskins territory, so there's quite a bit of cognitive dissonance there.

I know that, but I think that no matter how tolerant Americans get, they're going to do it using a term with fewer syllables. We are a lazy people.
