Quote
The term "hoosier" began to take on its negative connotation in St. Louis during the mid-1950s when the Chrysler Corporation built a large automobile assembly plant in the St. Louis suburb of Fenton and closed a plant it had been operating in Indiana. At the time, the city of Fenton was at the then-rural southwest rim of St. Louis county. During this time, many former employees of the closed Indiana plant moved to Fenton for employment; so many, in fact, that entire subdivisions of new homes sprang up south of the plant, near what was then US Route 66. It became something of a local joke to refer to the new arrivals from Indiana as "hoosiers", and before long, anyone from the rural edges of St. Louis County was considered such.

I do not know if I entirely consider it synonymous with "white trash" or "hick."

I think I am issuing a personal moratorium on the word "offensive." You're offended? Cool. Please specify. Is the thing you dislike racist, sexist, misogynist, classist? Ablist, ageist? Or does it just bother you, and you think that your feelings are really important?

I wish more people took umbrage, because I would totally issue a personal moratorium on taking umbrage.

Today, a member of my immediate family said "black people are less intelligent than white people."

It took a few minutes of talking to get them to explain that they meant that because they often have fewer opportunities, black people often have less education and exposure to experiences which would provide practical knowledge.

Could not manage to explain to this family member why "black people are less intelligent than white people" is not an OK way to express that thought. I mean, unless you want people to think "oh god, my [family member] is a huge racist."

If olive oil is made from olives, what is baby oil made from? And how about Oriental flavor ramen noodles?

This one was just too stupid to not pass along.

It was a picture of a cattle guard that a right wing group posted and one of my right wing friends shared. The description read as follows...

Quote
"... You will love this one, I haven't stop laughing yet.

For those of you who have never traveled to the west, or southwest,
cattle guards are horizontal steel rails placed at fence openings,
in dug-out places in the roads adjacent to highways (sometimes across highways), to prevent cattle from crossing over that area. For some reason the cattle will not step on the "guards," probably because the
y fear getting their feet caught between the rails.

A few months ago, President Obama received and was reading a report that there were over 100,000 cattle guards in Colorado . The Colorado ranchers had protested his proposed changes in grazing policies, so he ordered the Secretary of the Interior to fire half of the "cattle" guards immediately!
Before the Secretary of the Interior could respond and presumably try to straighten President Obama out on the matter, Vice-President Joe Biden, intervened with a request that...before any "cattle" guards were fired, they be given six months of retraining.

'Times are hard,' said Joe Biden, 'it's only fair to the cattle guards and their families be given six months of retraining! '

And these two guys are running our country,

Passed on to you without further comment...

I CAN'T STOP LAUGHING - - - -

OH LORD HELP US!!!!"

That's an obvious joke, right? Of course it is. It's funny at all either. The President and Vice President are dumb. Hilarious.

What is funny, or scary is the comments on the picture by people that think this is real.

My friend who posted this wrote "Sounds like something Obama would say." So he's at least hedging his bets. He's not saying he believes it, but still he thinks the President is this dumb.

Most of the comments on the photo point out that this is not true, but there are quite a few ding a lings who do.  I didn't read all 8000 comments only about 30 to gather these examples.

"He is such a dumbass between the Vp and the prez it's dumb and dumer."

"Lmao! And who knows how long they sat around debating on this! Haahaa! Dummies!"

"We're done! Stick a fork in us!!!!"

"Go forward? That's even funnier !!!! Forward off the fiscal cliff!!!"

etc, etc...

Here is my favorite comment though.

"The irony is that you had to explain what a cattle guard was in order to set up a joke about someone who doesn't know what a cattle guard is. Who's really the dumbass here?"

That really is the perfect comment, Paul. Thanks for sharing this so we can all laugh at the stupidity of people who think our President is stupid.

(I mean, seriously. I do not have the greatest opinion of G.W.B. but I do not think it is possible for someone with a low I.Q. to be elected to our nation's highest office. There's a difference between being too stupid to understand things and too lazy to try.)

Quote from: My Idiot FB Friend
I'm sorry but I do not agree with it being a gun issue. It has to do with the simple fact that a mentally sick individual was living in society and killed these people. I also think that it is time to pull these people off the street and get them back into facilities away from society. Is this humane? I don't give a crap. How many people have died over the last few years by the hand of the mentally unstable? How is that humane? Get them the hell off the streets and away from our children, friends, family and the general population. And people have to stop whining and complaining and blaming others. They should get OFF their ever expanding asses and DO something. Change only happens when people make the change. Talk to your kids, spend actual time with them, if they are struggling, GET THEM HELP, whether it be with school or in life. STOP making it someone elses issue and deal with it. This is not just an USA thing, this is a Canadian thing too.

That's right, the solution is to lock up all mentally ill people.  Sigh.

People watch too many movies. They seem to think all you need to do is arm the good guys because in fiction the good guys are always better shots. In real life when both sides have guns there is no guarantee the good guys win.
