my illegal download copy of the game crashed like 20 minutes in. Not sure if I want to try again.

man, you'd think they would have some quality control over this stuff.

You should demand a refund.

Man, I really miss playing video games. Civ V is not fulfilling my RPG yearnings.

Maybe I can steal my family's Wii so I can play Paper Mario and Zelda. Or something.

Screw that, get Kirby's Epic Yarn. Seriously.

Ugh, I want to play Fallout SO BAD. I beat New Vegas, but I want to do Dead Money and then another playthrough. I just haven't had time in weeks and weeks.

Maybe next month. <sigh>

Did you ever do much gambling? It seems like the prizes aren't very good, and I'm not really short of money. I'm not sure what the point is - did I miss a big prize available somewhere?

I'm just curious. However, if you're so bummed about not playing it that you don't want to answer, I can wait.

Oh, sorry, I forgot to answer your question because I got wrapped up in what Inev's not playing.

I played a little blackjack, but I don't think there's much to it. Maybe an achievement on the XBox or something, but there are much better ways to play casino games if that's what your into. Games within games are not my bag. I just want to shoot stuff.

I know I've played at least one game where the only way to get certain unique items is by gambling (or maybe a different mini-game) but I can't remember what. This was pretty disappointing - brahmin steak and vodka and shit like that. They could have done a lot more with it.

I'm all about the shooting, too - that's one reason why I rarely had a companion in FO3. I want to kill everything myself.

New Vegas isn't a sequel, per se; it's a new story set in a new place with new characters in the same game engine. New Vegas has a few additional features -- most notably "hardcore mode," which requires you to eat, sleep, and drink water -- but the essential game mechanics are identical. So I'd suggest that if you're not interested in playing both, choose the one whose setting you prefer (probably the real-world city you've visited the most) and play that. You're not going to miss any plot points by skipping FO3 because the player-characters are totally different.

However, if you plan to eventually play both games, I'd suggest doing FO3 first simply because I've found that when you go back to FO3 after playing FNV, FO3 feels a little stripped-down without the additional features. (I get so frustrated at not being able to aim down the sights in FO3 now).

But if your gametime is limited, there's no need to play both unless you're a die-hard post-apocalyptia fic fan. There's at LEAST 60 hours of gameplay for a first-timer, and that's if you don't do too many of the side quests. I put 95 hours into my first playthrough and I didn't even visit all the locations on the map. I fully intend to go back to a previous save and put another 15 - 20 hours into my first character before I start my second playthrough. And New Vegas is very amenable to multiple playthroughs -- it's simply not possible to do everything there is to do in a single go. (Some of the choices you make close off other paths.)

So if you're just wanting to find out what all the fuss is about, New Vegas will do that for you just fine. You know where to come if you get stuck.

I read this today at notalwaysright.com:

Quote
(A man and woman with a 10-year old kid came up to my counter to rent Grand Theft Auto 4.)

Me: “You know, this game is rated and M and generally not considered a good choice for young children.”

Parent: “Yeah, so?”

Me: “Just saying… some parents don’t know I just wanted to make sure.”

Parent: “Pfft… like I care about that. You’re going to be a boring parent!”

And realized that someday I'm going to have this encounter:

Quote
(woman with a 10-year old kid came up to my counter to buy Grand Theft Auto 5.)

Me: “You know, this game is rated and M and generally not considered a good choice for young children.”

Parent: “Yeah, so?”

Me: “Just saying… some parents don’t know I just wanted to make sure.”

Parent: “Oh! It's not for him, it's for me.”

I've been thinking a bit about that recently. My Dad still plays computer games (not FPS or anything, but games) and he's 78. I'm looking forward to FO6 having Hardcore mode and also old people mode, where everything moves slower. Also, you'll have less sniping and more flame thrower and rocker launcher attacking - get it in the neighborhood and you're fine!

My dad does not play games. He thinks they're a waste of life.

My mom does, though. She will be the first one to tell you that she beat all 125 levels of Granny in Paradise.

I want to give your mom a TCoDP for that. I'll just give one to you and you can forward it to her.
