Some TV show I didn't just see.

Hey Cort - you're the one who recommended The IT Crowd to me, right? Have you ever seen Garth Marenghi's Darkplace? It looks like it would be good.

There are things like this in it.

I can vouch for the awesomeness of Darkplace.
You could also check out Snuff Box for something that has some of the sadme people, it's more of a sketch show with recurring characters.

i was flipping through the channels a while ago and i came across a show on TLC called 'my big fat gypsy wedding'.  i thought it was going to be about eastern europeans, but its about pikeys.  i was all, "holy crap, pikeys are real!"  and then i was sad because for special occasions the little girls look all grotesque and slutty like child beauty pageant contestants.

I watched that too.  Did you see the one where the non-traveller girl was marrying the traveller boy?

The bride's mom made the gypsies look understated and tasteful.

I will look into that. I'm a fan of the Boosh, and I also like Nathan Barley and Time Trumpet (I wish there had been more episodes of that).

I think The United States of Tara is terribly underrated.  Tony Collette is fantastic.  I can't recall where I first saw this show, but I do know I wasn't in Canada at the time.  It's not aired in my region at all, so I've been dependent on ISO Hunt to keep up.

Also Ugly Americans is just wonderful.

Why isn't there an active TV thread?

This really is a question about some TV show I didn't just see, but I imagine some of you watch Downtown Abbey. Is Downtown really pronounced like "down-tun" instead of, you know, downtown? Normally this doesn't bug me but I can't get on board with this. It's Downtown! Things will be great! No finer place! Dang English folk, changing pronunciation of words to sound all fancy.

I don't watch it, but isn't it the case that the programme is actually spelled as 'Downton Abbey', without the w?

yeah, it is Downton. It is not Downtown. it is a big fancy house in the middle of a rural area, it is not downtown in any way.

That show rules. I watched 2 seasons and a christmas special in 2 days.

Oops.

In my defense I swear I've heard it said both ways.

Also in your defence, it's quite possible that a British place name ending with the suffix -town might be pronounced as if it had the suffix -ton.

There is really no hard and fast rule for pronunciation of British place names (probably all place names, come to think of it).  You just have to be initiated.  For every rule you could come up with, there will be a great many exceptions.

There should totally be a thread to talk about TV.  We could argue about how to pronounce Treme.

I appreciate that, but there's really no defence defense.

Treme. That's another one I somehow haven't yet seen.

I love Treme, though others who came to it because of David Simon's masterpiece The Wire have been more critical.  There are extended scenes of musicians jamming, and if you're not keen on the type of music they play, it can take you out of the dramatic headspace, I guess.

It's not as good as The Wire, so far, but what on Earth is?

I must now go to work, delivering beer to the good people of The Garioch.  100 internet points if you pronounce that one right.
