Career records in college sports don't mean all that much, because you can't get them if you don't start your freshman year or leave early. The best players often leave early.

True. Winning percentage might mean more, but they aren't really comparable either. On the other hand, if the numbers are really astronomical, they can sort of be compared to folks in the same exact situation. For instance, Moore (hey, I'm Johnny One-Note!) has only lost two games in four years. That's pretty good no matter what your schedule is.

Houston, you gotta wait in David Klingler purgatory a few more years.

Because Klingler was a great passer as well? Sorry, I don't get your meaning.

And before the early out period, there was a good chunk of decades in which Freshman could not play Varsity sports.

Yeah, and not only has he had a full four year he also was given an extra year of eligibility because he sat out most of the 2010 season.  So he's got an extra 3 games there too.  And college football in general plays more games per season these days.  Taking all of this into account I can now see that he's probably pretty mediocre.

No, he's good. He may not be all-time-ever great, but his stats, especially this year, are insane. A nine-touchdown game, against anybody . . . that's pretty good. Andrew "feel-good-story-of-the-year" Luck's best game is 4.

The Klingler thing, I don't know. I do notice that he had an eleven-touchdown game against Eastern Washington University. I mean, they're no Rice, but still.

Also, I know at least Ash likes Joe Posnanski, you read what he wrote about that?  It was the closest I've ever been to leaving a shitty comment to an author of a blog post.  I really like him still, so whatever, but that was a pretty awful column.

In what capacity? In that he didn't immediately call for JoePa's head on a plate?

Look, I beg to differ. Read this one:
http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/7205085/growing-penn-state

I didn't go to Penn State, but grew up in Pennsylvania. My mom went to Penn State, as did a lot of my high school friends. JoePa is basically Jesus there.

To have this kind of news come out about a football program that you thought was one of the last truly good things on this earth... it's hard to process. If you're not attached, yeah, it's easy to say that everyone involved are monsters who deserve to be fired, imprisoned, what have you. And I'm not saying that's incorrect. I'm not suggesting for a minute that anyone involved should get off easy. I'm just saying, excuse us if we aren't all as bloodthirsty as you. Yeah, there's a certain amount of denial there. I ultimately want justice to be done. I just don't personally want to be part of a pitchfork-and-torches mob. I think that's how Pos feels right now. Call it what you want. If this had happened at an institution you cared deeply about, you would probably feel the same.

I must say I'm surprised I've gotten no replies to this. Given the number of people on the Interwebs in general who seem to think if you don't immediately renounce your Penn State fanhood completely and utterly, that you are in favor of child molestation. Thanks for not being those people.

They did the right thing to fire JoePa and the university president at this point. Still plenty of people out for blood, though.

It is very easy, and fundamentally true, to say everyone connected to this should have done more. But it's one of those things that's too easy to second-guess from afar. People like to fantasize about what they'd do in combat, or if they were mugged, but really, until you're actually THERE, who knows how the hell it's going to go down. So in a situation like this, when there's a lot of money and power at stake, I'd like to think that most people would have done the right thing and called the cops or whatever. Hell, McQuery should have barged into the shower and punched Sandusky in the face. But I am not prepared to say that Paterno and McQuery are now irredeemable people who should be shunned forever if I haven't walked a mile in their shoes.

Obviously, whoever at the higher levels decided they'd be better off covering it up is a grade-A moron and a terrible person (or people as the case may be).

JoePa is basically Jesus.

Actually, in this scenario he's more akin to the Pope covering up for one of his molesting priest.

Oh, BTW, the rioting kids there are idiots. Of course, on a campus with about 45K undergraduates, there are bound to be a fair number of meatheads.

Duuuude, we cross posted.  I think that Paterno made some mistakes and losing his job is a fair punishment.  I haven't followed the case enough to know how complicit he was.  But if he knew anything at all losing his job is fair.

It's going to be an ignominious end to JoePa's career that he gets forced out for this instead of retiring on his own terms.

Yup.

Well, it doesn't look good. I'm not going to call for Joe's head on a plate, but that whole thing is fucked and there's plenty of complicity to go around. I'm actually pretty surprised at the amount of lucidity from JoePa. I thought they were just propping him up at this point.

All I'm wondering is if Paterno is going to make it until next year or not without the job. If he does, we're talking serious Death Pool candidate.

Indeed. He himself has said the main reason he hadn't retired years ago is that he isn't sure what he'd do with himself. He didn't want to end up like Bear Bryant--leave the job that's basically encompassed your whole life, and then be dead within a year.

Of course, he's bounced backed from getting drilled on the sidelines like three times in the last year or some shit. Maybe he should take the Colts head coaching job when Caldwell gets fired and they draft Luck.
