"Artists need to make money to eat and to continue to make art. Artists used to rely on middlemen to collect their money on their behalf, thereby rendering themselves innocent of cash-handling in the public eye. Artists will now be coming straight to you (yes YOU, you who want their music, their films, their books) for their paychecks. Please welcome them. Please help them. Please do not make them feel badly about asking you directly for money.” -Amanda Palmer

I guess this belongs in Nature?

Come on guys, while I still have internet, post things and distract me. They've got me terrified. And as usual, the Tech Staff has managed to be out of town, as always seems to happen when there is a big storm.

I'm ready to hunker down in the basement with food and water and pugs and books. I do have the generator, but I'm supposed to turn it off at night... maybe I should just turn it off earlier when it still seems safe to go out. Also I am afraid the fence we have around it will get blown down. I think the generator would win that battle but it could still be a problem. It will be good to have after the storm when power is out for days but for the duration it just seems like another problem to solve.

A guy on the radio is saying "no electric infrastruce can withstand this."

Really, if I felt sure I was safe in the basement, I have plenty of books and batteries and radios. At first they were just emphasizing everyone should stay home and I was thinking they just had to be vehement because there are people who don't know to come in out of the rain. But the last NWS update said to stay on lower levels of your house and maybe you should leave if there are TREES. I mean, of course there are trees! We have taken down all the dangerous-looking ones over the years, but of course there are trees! It's a little late to tell me that maybe I should evacuate because there are trees. Waaah!

Yeah, I am more worried about trees than anything else. We have several big trees, and I'd like to think they're well-anchored, but I guess you never know. Hopefully if anything falls it's away from the house.

A bit late for them to suggest evacuating. Not sure which direction we'd go. I guess southwest; if you could get through to North Carolina, you'd be in the clear.

Oh, and the Jersey shore is completely fucked. Flooding, boardwalks washing away.

I guess we'd have to go somewhere with no TREES.

We have three big trees next to the house. We just had work done on them a few months ago - I asked the tree guy if they were dangerous and needed to come down, and he said no way, they were healthy, and just needed some branches taken out so the wind would pass through better in a storm. I hope he knew what he was talking about.

I did get a parking space with no trees nearby. Now they're saying you can park in county garages for free, but they're also telling me not to drive. Oh well, it's an old car.

Seriously, part of my relief at not needing to buy a new car right away was this storm. I was all "I will go out and buy an expensive-ass new car, and then a tree will fall on it next week." (Or on the minivan, which would be not quite as awful, but close.) If a tree falls on my old car, I will shrug and collect the insurance money.

If things go bad, wombles, it could be a good thing you've kept the pugs kinda chubby. They can warm you until you food them.

Can for "food" as a verb.

There's a lot that goes into preparing pugs for the table.  "Fooding" is shorthand for many processes.

The frozen yogurt shop tweeted that it will be open today, I guess modern American civilization is gradually resuming around here.

I had a bit of a start last night when a tree down the street fell down and hit a wire, leading to a bright flash and audible pop/thump-type explosion. Somehow it didn't actually end up disrupting power to my end of the street, though. The street's blocked off until it's cleared but it's not like I had any big plans to go out anyway.

Power stayed on and trees stayed standing. I actually came in to the office this afternoon, mostly to get away from the kids who were getting too wacky.

Weird exchange this morning: I called my mom just to make sure everything was OK with her. My mom is terrified of highway driving. Which for her is OK--I'd rather she take the back roads to my house than cause an accident on I-270 because she drives 20 MPH slower than prevailing traffic. But she constantly projects this fear on everyone else. I told her I was thinking of going to the office in the afternoon and she said "You'll probably want to avoid I-66," that being the east-west highway that is the most direct route from home to work. And I said "No, that's exactly the way I WANT to go. Not likely to be any downed trees, and if there were they'd be cleared quickly, as they want to keep that road open." She was a tad bewildered by this.

No point to this, I just thought it odd. What, it rained for 24 hours, so the highway isn't safe now?

My mom called me wanting to know how worried to be by stuff she was hearing because she doesn't "know the neighborhoods" so she didn't know if things happening in northwest were bad for me. I just kept saying I don't live in DC and that she's lived in the area since 1989 so she hould know this by now.

We lost power twice yesterday, for 45 minutes around noon then from 7pm to 5am. That one worried us since all the neighbors seemed to have power and normally single houses are the lowest priority. This afternoon I've heard some tires spinning so it seems the sleetiness of the rain is actually affecting cars a bit.
