Rutgers The State University of New Jersey

That part at least does sound stupid and pretentious.

Also, are you applying for jobs on the moon or what? Is there anyone reading your cover letter who isn't likely to know what "Rutgers" means? Consider your audience, like with any kind of writing.

Yes, I agree. The career counselor person at school flipped her lid that I just wrote "Rutgers University." I think she is a crazy person.

Also: I did not know that Rutgers was the state university of New Jersey until I was looking into applying here. But also, I didn't care, and I can't imagine anyone caring.

Anyway, I just submitted the application with Rutgers University so she can deal with it. (I did put the official name on my resume, Rutgers The State Whatever).

The guy reading the applications is also named Daniel so I am pretty sure I am getting the job. Based on people in my program, though, a really large percentage of urban planners are named Daniel.

(I would give anyone named Daniel the job, if I were hiring. We Dans think that way.)

I am really really good at distracting myself from work, so lately I have been reading about computers. Specifically, really basic computer stuff, like how RAM works, how a CPU works, etc. Read some wikipedia articles and found a logic circuit simulator online so I could make a binary adder. I read about how they work and then fiddled around with it (ok, actually, drew it during a boring lecture) and it worked. It was a really good experience in realizing how smart humans are... there is no way I ever would have made that logical leap. Not in a million years. Sure, I can think through OR and AND and XOR and figure it out, but the initial idea? Mind-blowing. For some reason I never understood how Binary works, I thought it was some kind of secret code. Now I can count to 1023 on my fingers! How's that for a party trick. (4 is flipping someone off! pretty Radical!)

I am thinking about this stuff a lot because of my GIS (computer-aided mapping) class. It's a frustrating program where you have to use weird tricks to do things that seem like they should be easy. The trick is that it looks like you're fiddling around with shapes, but really what you're doing is telling a computer how to draw a database or many databases. Definitely parts of it are really making me think of a computer as a complicated machine that is good at manipulating numbers, instead of as a magical box that lets you run "programs," whatever those are. For this class a lot of the readings are about people in the 60s and 70s figuring all this stuff out on mainframes, and it's really cool. Having pretty much grown up with computers, it's weird thinking about how it all works. I feel like there is a huge mental gap for me between the stuff I'm reading about (connecting wires and transistors and switches so that little lights turn on and tell you what two numbers added together are, using magnetic tape to store information, etc) and Facebook or a video game or making a map that tells me where the major watersheds are in New Jersey. Trying to think about how I'm typing this right now and sending it to all of you on a machine descended from that simple little 4-bit adding machine is pretty insane.

(Buying wires and toggle switches and little lightbulbs and making an adding machine in a little box is such a beautiful nerdy project. One day I won't have homework.)

Random bar dude interrupted our conversation to tell us "you're all a bunch of loud assholes" and that we were being "disrespectful to females." Would not explain. Kept saying things about how we are in public and people can hear us. I cannot name a single thing we were talking about that I wouldn't say in front of my mom.

Why do jerks exist? Come on dude.

Today I went to Bayonne, NJ, which is a small city across the Hudson river from Brooklyn. I'm doing a project about it and I needed to take some pictures. It is adorable. I was expecting gross post-industrial Jersey, not cute row-house Jersey. It was the kind of place that makes you wanna get married and bring up kids in a place where they can walk to school. Exploring, though, I could not figure out where to get a view of NYC. Finally I looked at the map on my phone and realized I was only seeing the western half of the peninsula, divided by the highway-- on the other side of the highway is a weird wasteland of half-abandoned warehouses and factories and docks. I drove through a few miles of that emptiness and eventually got to a park with a 9/11 memorial and a gorgeous view of Brooklyn and Manhattan. The memorial was kind of creeping me out because it was dedicated by "The Russian People and Vladimir Putin to the victims of global terrorism." I get why they put it there, best view of the Manhattan skyline, but something about driving through empty streets brownfields to get there gave me the heebie jeebies. Definitely effective though, staring across the bay at 1 WTC and imagining seeing the attacks from there was intense.

Have any of you guys been to the actual memorial? I don't really want to go, but I cannot really explain why.

I have never wanted to go because my friend in NYC did not care for it. She was there for the actual event, and she is a travel editor so she knows her historical monuments, so I am willing to trust her expertise.

Did some more research and it turns out that monument was originally going to be in Jersey City and the city council rejected it for being huge and ugly. So they put it in Bayonne.

I support this Endeavor.

"New York City spends 3.7 times more money on affordable housing than the next 50 largest American cities-- combined." So now I can say I want to live there because it's where the jobs are, right?

I'm moving to L.A. in September and have years of management experience, where should I send my resume?
