[Doc]

People are kind of self centred shits. Corporations too.

Is it worth asking why you can't legally hire someone from another state? Is there state based segregation there that we don't know about?

[wombat]

It has something to do with their tax status in different states and maybe other things, she started to use the word "liability" but I don't know the details because I cut her off, not being interested in their excuses. I have seen other remote jobs advertising that they could only hire people living in certain states, so it's a thing. What's not a thing is not realizing that you have this problem BEFORE you try to hire people. And I am not mentioning any names (yet) (I don't want to make them mad, because I may still work for them on a freelance basis) but this is NOT some fly by night company, I can 100% guarantee everyone knows their name.

[Carlos del Vaca]

It isn't necessarily that they CAN'T hire someone in Maryland, it could be that it would require jumping through hoops and it would be a hassle so they don't WANT to. Not the same thing.

[wombat]

Whatever it is, it's something they really should have figured out BEFORE the editorial side decided to put me through the interview process and really before they posted the ad. Because if you're correct, I assume there really is a difference of opinion here - editorial wants to hire me and HR doesn't want to deal with the hoops. If they just decided they didn't want to hire me, they would not have to make up such a bizarre story.

[wombat]

It's entirely bizarre. I'm waiting to see if they really contact me about working freelance and whether I can get more of the story from the editorial side. Because seriously, I have never had a job interview process in my life where they talked so much like this was a done deal, and if they just changed their minds, fine, it happens, but why not just a polite form rejection email like normal?

The more I think about the "can't" the more mysterious it seems. On the one hand, Major Newspaper Company acquired Major Website fairly recently so maybe they don't have prior experience with remote hires. On the other hand, Major Newspaper has a DC bureau and it's hard to believe some of those people don't live in the Maryland suburbs.

[wombat]

Oh yeah. So sad.

[wombat]

OK, more than sad. What the fuck is the matter with people who call someone who has lost their dog and lie about seeing it? That is just plain evil.

[AugustWest]

Beef's dream?

[wombat]

Aw crap. Lileks said on Twitter they found the dog's remains.

[wombat]

I didn't see that. Should I not look for it? I'm not feeling particularly... resilient, at the moment.

[wombat]

Aw crap. Sorry.

[wombat]

Oh man. Why do we care so much? Why does it have to be so hard? fuck*ng dogs.

[miles]

Oh man. Why do we care so much? Why does it have to be so hard? fuck*ng dogs.

I read his tweets this morning and one of them ended with "hug your pup." Which I did, both of them, right away.

But seriously,  fuck*ng dogs.

[AugustWest]

Not reading, not reading, not reading.  Hugging, hugging, hugging.

[theinevitable]

So I've given myself plantar fasciitis by walking around all day every day in flat shoes. Fuck.

Ordered some orthopedic inserts for my work shoes, started doing stretching exercises.

My dad mailed me this little rubber cylinder that you roll your arch on to stretch it...

My friends, it feels better than sex.
