I kind of thought one of my classmates had a crush on me, but observation has indicated that she laughs that hard at everyone's jokes. Either way: her laugh is a thing of beauty. It's very loud, and she throws her head back. She is in her 30s but has the pure laugh of a child.

Also I want to somehow steal her apartment in Jersey City. "Garden level" ie well-renovated basement of a brownstone, kitchen/living room, bedroom, and bathroom with a little courtyard backyard, 2 blocks from the train into downtown NYC, which is a maybe 10 minute ride.

Well, if nothing else, I am learning a lot of microsoft excel tricks this summer.

As I finally finish this frustrating data-scraping project, I wonder if my data is going to Make News or Do Nothing. Steeling myself for the second. I think maybe my boss will write a strongly worded public letter about it.

Playing Final Fantasy III on my Raspberry Pi, and it is making me realize how amazing modern video games are. And at the same time, maybe corny writing can hide better when the graphics are 16 bit.

I have an enormous crush on a woman who works in my office. I let slip that I can't come to a community meeting tonight because I have a date and she is teasing me. I think I am blushing like a 13 year old.

She is just my type, apparently-- bureaucratically powerful 30-something with a husband and a small child.

This is an OK thing. I am consistently surprised how many people just can't make Excel dance when they shoot their gun.

In between that kind of experience and if you keep going into programming language and add some database background I can hire you to be my replacement when I get tired of this place.

This is my backhanded way of saying it sounds like you are doing Neat Things.

So, like, I'm moving to L.A. next month if you are trying to get tired of that place by September 1st?  I can make sandwiches super fast, play bass, roll cigarettes real well (I will need a smoke break every 30 minutes but I can be fast about it), make good coffee (only available iced, need 24 hours advanced notice)…let's see…uh, make half-assed attempts at making Excel do stuff?

The goal here is to meet one of the powerful 30-somethings before they get to the husband and kids part. Or maybe when they're an increasingly powerful 20-something.

This woman at work is head of the planning department at our office, and daaaaaamn.

(Date was not great, as if that's news worth reporting.)

(girl, you're a hot 20-something with an entry-level job now, but I can see the moderately powerful 30-something with kids you have the power to become)

Goddam FormerMet, that is a perfectly cromulent list of attributes for what you want to do as well.

I've gotten more comfortable with smilies, so…

Ran to catch the train, caught the train, it was the wrong train. Express train to the Jersey Shore, no in-between stops. It made me feel better that there were 7 other people on the train with me who made the same mistake. You'd think if you were going to switch around the train schedule you would put up some signs or make an announcement before the train started moving or something. Or, and this is gonna sound crazy, put a sign somewhere on the train that says where it is going.

St Louis tomorrow. And today I agreed to work a few hours or 1 day per week max during the school year at my NYC job, still unpaid but I think it's worth it if I can work from home and don't have to take the train in more than once a month or something.

You left out the best/worst part of this story, you mentioned on Twitter that you told someone else it was the wrong train and they got on too. Awkward!

Yeah, that was extremely awkward, but I made eye contact with him when we realized what had happened and he shrugged and smiled.

Not that!

Did you then hang out at the shore for the day, as long as you were there?

I can't make Excel dance, but I've never really tried very hard.

Also, congratulations on not making the news.

Today I got introduced by the politician I work for to someone as "ahmed, from my office, I think you've met." The guy looked confused, because Ahmed is my 30-something boss (also a short, chubby, bald middle-eastern man). She also told me she's lived in NYC her entire life and has only been to New Jersey 5 or 6 times.

(She is awesome though, I am so charmed by her.)

Wombat, today another person told me I should pursue a PhD, and this time it was only tempting for a few minutes because I thought about all of the things you have said about it. My conclusion is that, sure, in a world where I had infinite time and money I would love to do it. I think maybe if I discovered I never had to do a job again that would be the first thing I did. But only in that condition-- one where I could walk away at any time.

I do not want to dedicate the rest of my life to doing one thing. And I sure as heck don't want to spend the rest of my days in some college town.

Today I did research for this giant, enormous, many-year long project they want me to do some super-preliminary research for. I spent all day reading schedules of public meetings and summaries of citizen complaints. Damn, people are crazy. My favorites:

1. Why are you relying on building better subway stations and roadways, when you could build a trolley system?
2. Obviously any market-rate housing built is going to be luxury, because that's all you can build in Manhattan anymore. But (this was in 2008) the market is going down, isn't it true that no one will buy it? Won't they just build that fancy housing and fail to sell it?
3. The public school curriculum in Harlem needs to stay the same, I don't care what you people say!
4. You need to pass a law that all real estate transactions must be approved by city council, or by the neighborhood board
5. you need to pass a law that guarantees jobs to people in my neighborhood

The answer to almost all of these was "ma'am/sir this meeting is about height restrictions on apartment buildings." So yes, real life is just like Parks and Recreation.

#2 is especially perfect, because I was trying to explain to some friends the other day how weird some people's ideas are about how real estate works.
