HARSH, dude. I saw OCMS at Mason's arena a few years ago (they were opening for the Avett Brothers), and honestly when they did Wagon Wheel it was one of the best concert moments of my life. All 10,000 people singing along, it was beautiful.

It's a good song and they perform it very well live.

I've heard this song talked about. Apparently it's a big deal, but I've never experienced it for myself somehow.

Today i made a lil python script that creates neighborhood maps. You put in your base map document and a list of your chosen NYC neighborhoods and it creates a map for each neighborhood, labeled, centered on the correct borough with the other boroughs faded to a lighter color. They're ugly but functional.

Damn, the satisfaction of hitting enter and then seeing 190 maps appear in the folder 45 seconds later... very good.

Not incredibly useful, but now I know my way around the GIS scripting interface and have a little cookbook of how to do things. Just don't tell my boss I spent like 3 hours on this. It turns out the GIS/Python project is ... not well documented.

Yes! I loved that.

Today a guy from the tech department at work emailed me a link to my own GitHub (where people who code share their projects online) and asked if it was me. He had an idea and googled it and found my project!! He asked if I ever finished it and made it into a website... so now I really need to do that! Very pleased.

My GF's remark was that she has never, ever seen me smile this much about anything else at work, which is maybe an indication that I should continue pursuing the coding stuff. Hmm.

It tickled me to see this former poster on the loose in the wild.

Maybe it's just because I am incredibly jetlagged, but I have no memory of who that is?

Ugh. My last day at my job is in 1 month. I had kind of come to the conclusion that they were bluffing because we had an agency-wide meeting about Civil Service and there was no mention of the idea that there is a "deadline" at 2 years.

Ugh. Well, here's to bigger and better things. I know it never seems that way at the moment, but the jobs that don't want you are jobs you don't want.

There are a lot of jobs that come with probationary periods of some kind, and when they're trying to convince you to take the job, they always make it sound like it's just a formality, and never mention it again. This is no doubt because most of the time it turns out that way but it's there so they can use it if they want to use it, unfortunately.

OK. Met with HR today. Now the story is that this position was funded by a grant and it was never going to be possible to stay longer than 2 years. What the fuck? I really, really do not get it. I told a coworker (who was in charge of the project I worked on most of this time) and he was astonished and pissed off as well. We had other coworkers who were explicitly The Grant Guys and we all knew they were only hired temporarily... I was never included in that group.

I kind of do not believe this explanation but... whatever, byyyyeeee. No word yet on that interview I had, but just saw a job working for the mayor doing research on something extremely related to the job I was doing at City Planning. Or the computer programming thing that I still really really want to do.

WTF. How can the story keep changing like that? Bizarre and giraffey. On the other hand, that's a really good answer when asked why you left your last job, so maybe best to stop asking questions and move on.

Seems too new to have acquired a proper patina of despair, but YMMV.

Yes. And on my way out I'm going to tell the Good coworkers to watch out because this could happen to them.

It turns out part of the story is that I was misinformed about the Civil Service stuff. I was not "provisional" I was "non-competitive." Provisional means you are hired but haven't taken a civil service test yet-- "non-competitive" means you were hired for a specific task or skill and don't have to take a test, but can be fired at any time. It is supposed to be for things like lawyers (not a testable skillset) and jobs that rely on a personal characteristic (like living in a certain neighborhood or speaking a certain rare language). The Department of City Planning is not allowed to hire us under that category, but is somehow getting away with it.
