Now I want to read the comic book.  I bet it kicks ass.

Yeah, the comic is good, although it is a huge-ass slice of 80's (actually, late 80's/early 90's) . The second you see the fiance (blond, enormous poofy hair....CHECK), you can date it. But good, nonetheless, and despite most of the fans.
DAMN FOREIGN CARS.

I don't really know what else to recommend. Oh, "The Magic Crane," this awesome kung fu movie. I almost guarantee you that you will never find it unless I mail you a copy. OHHH! And speaking of kung fu, CRIPPLED MASTERS! An armless guy teams up with a legless guy teams up with a MONKEY to FIGHT EVIL WARLORDS! Played by a real legless guy, armless guy and monkey, respectively!
Oh, man, I think I'm going to try and disgorge all of my knowledge gleaned through Kung Fu Klub:
SHAOLIN INVINCIBLES- The movie that invented TONGUE FU! (as seen below)

DRUNKEN MASTER- The ORIGINAL, starring a really young Jackie Chan and Siu Tien Yuen, best know for playing THOUSANDS OF DRUNK OLD MASTERS! See an old Chinese guy do what they do best: hit people and then mock them!
5 VENOMS VS. WU-TANG- 5 year old Hopping Chinese Zombies. Just....just brillan.t Hold on, I need a moment. WARNING: Contains baby c*ck.
BATTLE ROYALE- Now we move on to our other mysterious friends from the far East, the Japanese! BATTLE ROYALE dares to ask, what would happen if you put a bunch of 7th-graders on an island, and made them kill eachother? WHAT INDEED! The sequel is also good: imagine SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, only there are a bunch of little Japanese girls running up the beach.
HARD BOILED- Highest onscreen body count of any movie, ever: 230 people are shot onscreen. That enough should make you want to see it. Oh, and Chow Yun-Fat plays a cop named Tequila. I watched this for the third time after watching NATURAL BORN KILLERS for the first.....damn.
THE HAPPINESS OF THE KATAKURAS- Do you like Japanese people, dancing in sailor uniforms? How about if they SING, too? Do you like movies where people die? This movie is basically treasure.
Wow, those were some awesome movies. Now I gotta go back and rent them again. Sorry about all of the caps, I enjoy violating internet manners/want to be like that dude from Aint-It-Cool.

So that's where they got the idea for Tonguey in Kung Pow (also a really excellent movie, btw).

And is Drunken Master 2 available anywhere other than in the crappy disneyfied bastard-child version?

Random trivia: the Drunken Master is the same character as the kid in Iron Monkey and Jet Li in the Once Upon a Time in China movies.

I got a copy of "Legend of the Drunken Master" which is really Drunken Master 2.  Is this the disneyfied version you speak of.

Random trivia 2: While I can't dig up his name right now, that character is an important hero in Chinese lore.  Jackie Chan was making a bold move by portraying him as a bratty kid in a kung-fu comedy.

JL, you understand of course, that by accepting our recommendations you are by implication undertaking an obligation.

You must post a review of each movie that you watch as a result of this thread.  Or else.

Happily.  I'm compiling a list of all the films now, and I'll be weeding out the ones that are too scary or that we've seen.  Then we'll go down the list according to what we're most interested in, what we feel like seeing that particular day, and what's available that week at North American Video.  (Screw Blockbuster!  Screw them in the face.)  Brief reviews will be posted in this thread as we go along.  Since you've all seen the films, it'll probably be as simple as "two thumbs up" or "two thumbs down."

If you guys were Amazon.com, you'd be able to tailor your reccommendations to our tastes after the first few films we rated.  But instead, we'll probably just argue about it ;)

Yeah, Jackie did a new version a few years ago. I never saw it, just because it totally lacked SAM SEED, international drunk man kung fu machine.

Golly, you guys are nuts.  I compiled the list, and after weeding out the dozen or so movies we'd seen and all the doubles, I have nearly 100 movies to choose from.

And I'm sure there's more to come.

Having gotten onto the Asian stuff, I'd throw in:

Ringu (despite your hatred of horrors - I don't think it's scary anyway).
A Chinese Ghost Story
Audition
Definitely - like Bozack said - Battle Royale.
Once Upon A Time In China (and the subsequent ones too) 'cause Jet Li is as good as they come!
Iron Monkey
Cowboy Bebop - Knockin' on Heaven's Door
Someone said anything by Miyazaki and that stands!
Wonderful Days (to be Sky Blue upon American release)

I think everyone else has mentioned the myriad I can think of at the moment. And there are, I'm sure, far more I could dredge up from memory alone.

We both liked Princess Mononoke and loved Spirited Away.  I'd really like to see Seven Samurai.  Please lean on her about Seven Samurai.

Yes. Disney completely redid the score and made major cuts of the ending.

Try Yojimbo instead. All the goodness of a Kurasawa/Mifune movie without requiring the patience needed to really enjoy Seven Samurai and The Hidden Fortress.

What the fuck?!?

Sure.  "Pass over two A+ masterpieces for an A-, because you might have a short attention span."  Yojimbo's good, no question, but that's like telling someone to pass over Citizen Kane and The Magnificent Ambersons for Chimes at Midnight.  Come on.

Rent the Criterion Collection DVD of Seven Samurai.  Better still, buy it.

Then, either Hidden Fortress, Throne of Blood, or Ran if you're in the mood for a color film.  Yojimbo and it's sequel, Sanjuro, after that, or perhaps Kagemusha ( The Shadow Warrior ).

Hope you've got a good video store near you.

Chimes at Midnight and F for Fake are my two favorite Welles movies actually. De gustabus blah blah blah. But my point was that I found Yojimbo a better introductory film. Seven Samurai and Hidden Fortress are magnificent films, but from what JL's described, I think she'd find them a bit plodding if not already shown how great Kurasawa is.

Yojimbo is also a great way to demonstrate existentialism to someone without insisting they snore their way through Camus.
