Holy crappin' crap, sports fans! Could it be? A from-nowhere victory for Rodney himself?!

You know, I always just sort of assumed that Ramses/Rodney was dead, especially given the reverent tone in which Mrs. S. discusses him. What's up with this?

I think I just wet my ****** a little bit and I'm afraid it's not urine.  I'd check what it was but I fear that it might be blood.

This, though slightly cliched, is something that Stad just might be able to do right enough that I could completely take back all the meh comments of the last 3 days.

And though I don't have any lighting devices for a Beef victory, I do wait for the story to switch back toward him.  I thought I saw it here with Ray beginning to realize what kind of a good friend Beef is but as usual Beef is gonna get the backseat shaft.

Wait, that's not what I meant at all... dammit.  I hate days like today.

(Also, compare and contrast with the one Beef dad story we have and the poignancy of Beef's awe at meeting Rodney becomes just a little more bittersweet.  Damn I went from ecstatic to mopey in 2.5 seconds and this is a cartoon about cats with thongs and the like.  I think I need a vacation)

See, the thing is that you're assuming that Rodney showing up is actually a good thing for SoRod. Old Man Smuckles is a canny fighter -- no doubt he realizes how Ray has been coasting thus far, fugues notwithstanding. Who's to say he approves of Ray's strategy?

See part of my update to the comment above.

Here's the deal though.  Rodney isn't in the gates and he hasn't been fighting for all the days.  He's there like.. hell.. I dunno.  Michael Landon in Highway to Heaven.  Sage advice style only with more liquor and spittle in his veins.  "The hell you boys better start acting like men!"

Seriously though, Beef is getting the backseat shaft.  I don't care how many times me saying that makes Bobby lust after my mom, it's true.

Me too. He can't have been around during Ray's childhood, at least. I mean, Beef would've instantly recognized him as a GOF Champion in old times.

Also, I must say, HELL YES! I was starting to lose faith in a decent ending to this arc, but the spirit of Rodney will remind Ray and Beef what the fight is all about. They're gonna throw down!

I could probably never get bored of strips that incorporate nicknames and phrases for ramses luther. My real hope is that these arent known catch phrases he has, but that Beef is simply so obsessed that he came up with them all on his own.

is it wrong that i really hope that this is some ruse set up by beef and liebot so that he can totally kick rays ass?

i also appreciate the fact that ray kept the christian brothers  bottle just in case.

Ramses: The hell I ain't your daddy boy.
Ray: ...............
Ramses: I got my chiles fileted five years 'fore I started getting rutty with your momma.
Ray & Beef: *gasp!*
Ramses: The hell you think I left you and the woman. You are the son of a whiskey truck driver.

Also, "If this were any more right you would be Liv Tyler"

My first response to this was suspecting that Rodney was some kind of ghost. I'm not entirely sure that it isn't the case, but it seems kind of unlikely.

Also, I wonder how many other "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee"-esque taglines about Stubbs Beef has in the ol' brain tape.

(While we're all coming up with thread titles that wouldn't have given it away, "Two old knuckleheads swilling Christian Brothers" would've worked, too.)

I don't know about the rest, but Rodney is the Soul of the Fight. He's going to make them get busy. I'm less confident than I have been that Ray is going to win, but there is going to be some fighting. Rodney will be hugely impatient with all of this crap. He will want to see this Finished. He will be amazed and sickened that his son won't Do the Job.

Or he will have had a Realization in the years between and counsel them to just walk out and let the whole thing go, thereby turning the whole arc into a tubful of lukewarm, stringy crap.

The title did ruin it for me but all the same this is an interesting (if slightly cliched development).
I honestly can't see a good way for this to end, in my mind:
Ramses beats the crap out of those damn fools (after leaping over the fence of course)
OR
He is also Beef's Father! (which gives me this weird Abraham, Ishmael and Isaac vibe for some reason)
OR
He tells them no one should beat the crap out of a friend from small times just to win the Fight (kind of weak but with the right language it would work well)
OR
he tells them it's man time and they better come real (Is perhaps most basic idea).

All my versions end with him disappearing into the sunset, Ray and Beef unable to follow from inside the Fight.

So, I'm all kinds of pissed off right now - not about the strip, that's awesome.  More about the fact that I came to Europe in hopes that I would be able to make an original comment within the first few posts of the strip (I haven't really been commenting on this arc because by the time I get to it, everything's been said), seeing as how when I wake up here, it's about midnight PST, which is when Onstad usually posts the strips.  I wake up, have a little breakfast, turn on the computer, and A-HA!  new Achewood.  I come to the board, and....WHAT THE HELL!?  There's already 3 pages of posts.  Screw you, Onstad, for posting at 8PM when I came to Europe specifically to be able to comment on this arc.

So, this strip is good things, like fuzzy duckies in a sun-dappled pond.  No, wait, it's not as lame as that.  It's more like....treasure.

Instead of a g-host, Rodney is probably just Beef and Ray being exhausted and drunk off of Christian Brothers Brandy. All seeing shit or something? Wait no, probably not. Because Rodney is old looking. He has white hair, a white goatee, and white bushier eyebrows. Wow, that's some attention to detail right there.

And as we all know, IRC is never wrong.  We did tests... bitches.

But IRC conducted the tests! paradoxical!

At first I thought " here is the first time shine lines were drawn on the walls indicating possible translucency/transparency"

Then I looked back and you can clearly see the shine lines when they were all let into the GOF ( http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=02142006 )

I HOPE MR ONSTAD DID NOT GO BACK AND DRAW THEM IN LIKE A CHEATER

but I don't think he would

still I wonder how far back this twist was planned if at all;
Title: Re: March 14, 2006: D...dad?
Post by: acoxcae on March 14, 2006, 05:07:28 pm
Wouldn't it make sense that the walls are transparent?  I mean, there's probably spectators outside, or else who is Envelope Martinez commenting for (or who *would* he be commenting for?).  If there are spectators, they probably wouldn't be able to see inside if it weren't for the clear walls.  Also, the crane operator might have a tough time.

Must be some tough plastic, though.

Eh, you people liked this? I dunno. A couple people said this arc feels like fan fiction, and I didn't really see it, but Ray's (probable) father showing up cinches it.

I'll accept that good writers can get themselves out of cliches with style, but I wonder how he's going to do it. I was crap on predicting where this was going, so I'm not even going to venture a guess how he does. It'd take a better writer than me, anyway, so I couldn't even think of anything plausible and interesting.

Awesome. Just awesome. I have the feeling it's going to end up being the fourth possibility Doc posted, with a win from Beef. I think the fact that he manipulated Ray into doing the work for him in taking down most people in the fight is as valid (if not as utterlly badass) a win as one where someone just kicks the hell out of everyone.

Rodney has no space to care about who is whose knucklehead. He is Impatient.

Ramses/Rodney is a very cold dude. If you're his son, he's an asshole. Ray's mom was just all caught up ins; she's an older, classier Tina (who would have been all over dating a GOF ch.).

Ray and Rodney will have a Confrontation.

I must say, it seems like the army tactic is generally favored (or so we've been lead to believe) so there's gotta be a canonical GOF way of dealing with the "well, nobody left but me and the loyal ones" moment.  This can't be the only time it's ever happened before.  Where's Beef with a bit of "well basically the way it's gone in this situation just about every time but in 88 and 96 was..." wisdom?
Title: Re: March 14, 2006: D...dad?
Post by: Doc on March 15, 2006, 12:53:47 pm
Historically those who join an army are either so devoted they basically sacrfice themselves on the front lines fighting for the leader or they secretly think they can take him out on the third day (and are generally mistaken). Generally when someone who plots as intricately as Beef uses someone like Ray for their own ends the "leader's" eventualy downfall is planned from the beginning, never before has someone as selfless yet brilliant as Beef and someone as charismatic as Ray come together.
We are seeing history in the making people.

They could be the proverbial Deus Ex Machina, beating up Roast Beef (properly), Ray eats them, and everything finishes off nicely, with no loose ends. Fandwasdic. Presumably they died during the course of things, says Beef's "all last dudes standin' at the Great Outdoor Fight"

Dammit why do people keep saying the GOF is a fight to the death?!!  It's clearly not--dudes get killed sometimes, yeah, but a simple ass-kicking is sometimes all it takes.

Yeah, but you're assuming here that Barry and Ted could possibly not lose in a fatal way. Then again, who knows? Maybe they have secret Yob-Fu or something. (They must have qualified somehow, after all...)

Also: it's so nice to see the board quiver in antici... ... pation. I know the GOF backlash is well under way, but we're still all salivating for it, huh?

If memory serves, they were let in because Ted had been in the British GOF, and Barry had a funny blog. There was a lot of cannon fodder at the GOF, anyway. Sound and Motion, for instance.

Makes you wonder how many people actually fought to get in.
