Hello everyone.
My name is Thomas. I live in Cupertino or San Francisco depending on the time of week. I am a menial office worker with ambitions of librarianhood. Ideally, I would sit behind a computer that my patrons could not see the screen of and point to where the nonfiction section is. I am the sort of person who thinks this would be severely awesome. My favorite liquids are earl grey and Jägermeister and my favorite past-time is bicycle polo.
I've read Achewood for a sort of short time, and am sort of totally in love with it.
-
based on... every single thing you just listed... I think we will get along nicely.
-
I am pretty much pro your introduction as well... except that all librarians should be Hot Ladies.
Could this be why you are not a librarian yet?
Perhaps you should either get Hot Lady Surgery or get into a non Hot Lady dominated field.
(And yes, I know, most librarians are old ladies. But they were Hot Ladies once! That is how life works, Hot Ladies eventually become old ladies. This is how people are designed. They earned continuous employment by being Hot Ladies at some point in time, this is what matters.)
Other than that, A++ first post, fast shipping, good packaging, would read again.
-
Yeah this guy is either one of us or he's created an elaborate identity to carry off a complicated long-game trolling.
Either way I'm impressed.
By the way, it's not Tea-eh-Time-eh is it?

Welcome aboard, Member #666!
I was worried that whoever who got that number might only post here once or twice and then call it quits, but you sound like a dude who is likely to stick around. That makes me happy.
-

Ands strangely, when I discover someone drinks Earl Grey they go up about ten points* in my estimation... Welcome aboard. May the sick fuckery amuse you as it amuses us, and may you contribute both willingly and abley.
*such points are completely arbitrary and not exchangable for any known contemporary currency. Maybe a groat or two however...
-
What are your thoughts on wealth distribution and ranch dressing?
-
I thought for a while that it would be good to be a librarian, but the way libraries are going these days, it would probably just end up depressing for me. If I can't tell a kid who wants to know where to find a book about lemurs to go look it up in the damn card catalogue, there's no point. Oh, how I miss card catalogues!
-
Oh, how I miss card catalogues!
In some sort of sepia-soaked way I miss them as well - as a user. If I actually had to maintain one, ugliness would result.
-
I worked in a library, with card catalogs. I got hit on a lot. Something about the quiet - the discreet whispering of "what are you doing tomorrow night?" is a lot less frightening than asking it outloud I suppose. Later I worked at a comic bookstore, where all the men were generally afraid of me.
Welcome Tea. I love Earl Grey, but love Lady Grey even more.
On the two separate occasions I've had Jägermeister it has been a man-buying-shots-for-a-group-of-girls situations, and both men (who are totally unaffiliated to each other, and are of two totally different social circles) jokingly said "it'll put hair on your chest!" to all the ladies. Is this, like an official Jägermeister drinking tradition or something? Either way, those will be the only two times I'll ever drink Jägermeister anyway. Jägermeister is not my friend.
-
Fuck Jäger, but welcome Spawn of Satan anyway!
-
I've never really liked Earl Grey, but I think that's just because I love the flavour of tea so much that there's really nothing you can add to it that doesn't just make me like it less.
I'm not yet really any more a part of this wonderful and scary little world than you, but hello anyway!
-
Oh wow. I was not expecting this sort of response. My mind can only manage this as a list. Apologies for the aesthetic sacrifice.
theinevitable: Thanks! I have yet to find a member of this board that I thought was not an Alright Cat Or Chick.
lfm: Um, thanks again. Y'all are really sweet.
Doc: It's just ˈtē-ˌtīm, thank you.
At about this time, I realize how repetitive and boring this is like to be. Summary: I vastly prefer computers to card catalogs on account of the latter does not let me read wikipedia while working. I am powerful fond of licorice, therefore Jäger. I am unaware of any chest hair growth ritual it is a part of. I would like Earl Grey even if Douglas Adams and Jean-Luc Picard did not consider it their tea of choice. I believe I am not the 666th member, but rather the 666th member to start a thread. Perhaps I am both.
I believe pretty strongly that social welfare should be a nation's top priority. I believe ranch dressing is almost always strictly inferior to honey mustard or simply oil and vinegar.
Again, thanks for the warm welcome.
-
Says here on the label that my current favorite infusion is Assam No. 5 TGBOP Boisahabi Malty
Second Flush. I don't know what half of these words mean, all I know is that it's awesome.
Also: welcome!
-
I have yet to find a member of this board that I thought was not an Alright Cat Or Chick.
I'll be handling that department for you, bubby.
Welcome, and please mix right in, elbows high for safety.
-
Welcome, Teatime. Your introductory thread is igniting card-catalog nostalgia in my soul (ah, for the days when libraries were mysterious!), which means you're all right by me.
-
St. Zartran was a librarian.
-
St. Zartran was a librarian.
Based on his blogging at Last.fm he still is. He catalogs media in an area where country CDs are very popular. Then he mocks the libraries' music choices mercilessly.
Also Teatime is member 945. Jough has deleted 278 people (including whoever 666 was) and #1 is reserved. Which is why the front page says we have 666 members right now.
-
(including whoever 666 was)
So all the while we've been discussing this the real Antichrist's whereabouts remain unknown.
-
WELL BOO TO THAT
Oh, well. It was fun while it lasted. 666 may not be the real Mark of the Beast (http://www.csad.ox.ac.uk/POxy/beast616.htm) anyway.
Education.

Every topic on this messageboard that does not come back to Gourmet Food or Ladies Who Dig Ladies comes back to people missing Saint Zartan. This is neither a good thing or a bad thing.
It is just a thing.
-
I will always wonder what would have happened if I'd stuck around the first time I registered. I registered, then somehow forgot the password, and couldn't re-register for a few months because my email address was already being used. When I finally got a gmail account I registered this SN.
I'm pretty sure that old nick got erased, though.
PS I am so confused about how there are 2 separate discussions going on about basically the same thing.
-
I am so confused about how there are 2 separate discussions going on about basically the same thing.
Other boards threads go off topic, here they just all converge onto the same topic, see lfm re: Food, Ladies and Zartan.
We can probably add Hot Librarians/EMTs/Zooologists and Obscure Music to the list too.
-
It seems that we haven't really discussed obscure music in a while. Maybe I am wrong.
I am not pulling a Paul/Judy, I remember how I semi-randomly brought up Dinosaur Jr the other day. and the Wilco thread.
-
I mentioned Trojan Hearse, so I am doing my part.
-
Teatime, welcome to the board. I am also a fan of the Earl Grey. A place that I used to frequent in Denver had Earl Grey Malts that were to die for.
I have a soft spot in my heart for librarians male and female, since my surrogate pa here in my part of Alaska is a librarian, and we go to the shooting range all the time. He casts his own bullets, and he's loaded me up with some 500 rounds. He and his wife are awesome people.
-
My mother-in-law and sister-in-law are both librarians. (MIL retired)
-
Is your screenname pronounced "Teh-ah-tim-eh"? if not, it should be.
-
It's just ˈtē-ˌtīm, thank you.
-
What does pulling a Paul/Judy entail?
-
Unless I'm mistaken, I believe inev means that he is not unaware of information that he himself posted at some earlier time. In this case, a reference to obscure music.
I've actually never listened to any Dinosaur Jr. before, but they sound like a band I might be interested in. My dad owns some of their albums and I almost ripped them onto my laptop over Christmas, but I had limited time and went with his Kula Shaker albums instead.
-
I wish my Dad listened to Dinosaur Jr.
He did just see Dave Mason; that's pretty cool.
-
I was a big Dino Jr. fan in college. But after a while, it seemed like all their albums sound the same. "Green Mind" is my favorite.
-

Kula Shaker falls into the category of "bands that I know had one over-played radio single but that I remember nothing at all about otherwise." See also: For Squirrels and Train.
-
personally I am currently obsessing over the song "The Lung." a lot.
-

Their other stuff all sounds pretty similar, but I have this thing for wah-wah pedals so it works out alright for me, really. They got back together recently and should be releasing a third album later this year.
I feel like I have this Magic Touch sometimes where I will discover a band I really like that broke up several years ago and then suddenly they will get back together again. This happened for me last year as well (in a sense) with World Party. If anyone has a favorite defunct '90s band they'd like to introduce me to, feel free to send me a CD or something and I'll try to work my mojo on it.
-
I'd ask you to do it with Alice in Chains, but with Lane Staley dead, that would take some zombification mojo.
-
I have a friend who was so into Dinosaur Jr. that when I was listening to David Bowie's "Hunky Dory" and Quicksand came on, she said to me "I didn't know Bowie covered a Dinosaur Jr. song!" and... man... I just didn't know what to say.
What do you say to that?

You know what to say to that. (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=01072005)

man, David Bowie? Really?
I just.. I just don't get him. Kind of like... a lot of musicians who are universally loved. Naming names only makes people dislike me.

This can be fixed. I used to have no time for TMBG, and now I adore them.
But seriously, not liking Bowie? What are you, a child molester or something?
-
Yeah, what the hell? Do you eat kittens? What is wrong with you?
-
Yeah, we wished to trust you with our music, inev, but you have proven yourself of the crudest moral fiber. I think you would shoot a baby.

tI is apparently the secret identity of Phantom Limb
-
damn. I knew it.
I also don't "get": The Boss, Sebadoh, Bright Eyes, free jazz, The Eagles (in this case, I will just say... I hate them.), James Taylor (again, hate.), Fleetwood Mac (again.), Pavement, (Most of) The Clash
GOUGE AWAY.
(I used to not "get": Neutral Milk Hotel, The Rolling Stones, The Who... I mean, theoretically if you go far enough back I only liked The Beatles and classical music. And Van Morrison.)

I can't say much because I too was one of those who listened to "Whatever's Cool With Me" before "Hunky Dory". But that was 13 years ago, so I had time to mend my ways.
Inev, please, listen to "Heroes". Now. Please.
James Taylor (again, hate.)
In this case I concur. So I recommend a Lester Bangs article entitled "James Taylor Marked For Death".
I've actually never listened to any Dinosaur Jr. before, but they sound like a band I might be interested in. My dad owns some of their albums
I dreaded the day I would finally read/listen to a sentence like this.
-
damn. I knew it.
I also don't "get": (Most of) The Clash
The appropriate reaction to this can be summed up thusly: !
-
I must admit while I have a great deal of respect for Bowie, he's someone who, like The Beatles, I can only really listen to a handful of songs by anymore. And I do tend to find that people covering Bowie works better for me than his versions of his songs. Great song writer, not as good a performer. That said, I do like his voice... But for instance, Sue Jorge's covers of Bowie tracks for Life Aquatic...
As for people's parents listening... A number of my friend's parents as well as my own listen to some great music. My mother ended up putting the last Queens of the Stone Age album on her Desert Island top ten!
I like to think of it as parents being respectable.
-
my friend at U Chicago's best friend's dad is a big fan of The Feelies.
That's just cool.
My parents listen to horrible music. It makes me sad.
I am trying to find "James Taylor Marked For Death" online, but I can only find reference. i will keep searching.
Also, re: the clash-- basically anything that sounds like it was Produced by Someone who Knows What They're Doing sounds bad to me lately. Plus, I suck at paying attention to lyrics. So.
-

Wow. Apart from Fleetwood Mac and a very little bit of James Taylor, this is mostly me. And I too, if you go far back enough, only liked the Beatles and classical music. It took me much longer to get into Van Morrison though. But now I am way into him.
-

Sorry, I forgot to tell you that you'll probably have to buy a book called "Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung" for that. And you're not gonna regret it.
-

Oh you did not just knock The Beatles, did you? This calls for a Chainsaw Duel to the Dismemberment.

At least you like Pixies.

Who are the Beatles, a Pixies cover band or something?
this is not my joke, I do not know where it comes from.
-
Oh you did not just knock The Beatles, did you? This calls for a Chainsaw Duel to the Dismemberment.
Eeeeeek!
As I say, it's by no means an insult. I love them (except Paul), and couldn't for a second undermine their importance in modern music, I just can't listen to an awful lot of it anymore. There're about 3, maybe 4 tracks per album that I will listen to now. The rest, I just find a bit... Something that doesn't work for my ears anymore...
Some of it however, is still awe inspiringly good!
-
I just purchased this album (http://static.marktplaza.nl/images/1/65/169265.jpg). I don't really like Paul McCartney outside of the Beatles at all.
Anyway, it's a collection of covers of 50's songs which he likes. I was hoping, originally, that it was an album of covers of the songs by Russian bands, as the only bits of text I could read on the whole sleeve were the song titles.
Unfortunately, the cover was slightly banged up and I couldn't tell until I listened to it that it is Sir Paul.
apparently "CHOBA B CCCP" means "Back in USSR," but the song itself is not on there.
-
Amy Winehouse anybody?
-

I am still young and fancy-free, but I dare say I hope I am never this exclusive. That said, there are quite a number of Beatles songs that I find trite and repetitive, but this typically means I am skipping 3, maybe 4 tracks per album.
But hey, no worries. Different strokes and all.
I actually like Paul's voice best of the band, but I can easily see why people dislike him.
-

I like a lot of the bands that have been demonized in this thread, but especially I love Paul McCartney. I've stayed away from this topic because I generally like to talk about things I love rather than things I hate. I guess that goes a long way towards explaining my love Paul McCartney.
The Scissor Sisters have a new album with a song called Paul McCartney on it. They are playing tonight in my town. I'm going to go see them.

I too love Paul McCartney. I own all of his studio albums except for Press to Play and Give Me Regards to Broad Street, and that is only because I haven't gotten around to buying those yet. The man is a genius, and I am extremely happy that he has hundreds of millions of dollars that allow him to do whatever the hell he wants.

Oh fuck yes, Paul. They put on such a good show. It was really cool because Ana Matronic is from PDX, and she talked about how she used to strip there.

Its seems like everyone with a discriminating taste in music has gone through an obligatory "Beatles are the only good music" phase at some point, but it usually ends the moment they discover something else that isn't crap. I blame Clear Channel for this.
I didn't discover the Beatles until ninth grade, so for me it was R.E.M and classical music. And video game music, I was big on that too. And back when I was like five I used to really be into Social Distortion.
I've actually never listened to any Dinosaur Jr. before, but they sound like a band I might be interested in. My dad owns some of their albums
I dreaded the day I would finally read/listen to a sentence like this.
Damn, that's twice in one week I've done this now, isn't it? Although to be fair, my parents have yet to reach the point where they stop buying new albums or discovering new artists, so it's not as bad as it sounds.
Hey, remember when Froot Loops had only three flavors?
-
Hey, I remember Lucky Charms before there were purple hoss shoes!
- Get off my lawn
Not that my mom would even have entertained the idea of buying anything like that. Low fat granola, a heaping teaspoon of wheat germ, and a tablespoonful of cod liver oil was the way I started my days as a young'in.
-
Before I was 18 years old, the only breakfast I ever knew existed was Cheerios with Milkman powdered milk. Breakfast of Champions, it was.
-
King Vitamin, you punks! Git offa my lawn!

I'll get my coat...

I believe you mean King Vitaman (http://www.bookofratings.com/cereal7.html)

Oh wow, you must really come from Circumstances.
-
oh fuck we had to wash sponges and saran wrap you know.
-
There has never been a time of plenty such as people did not need to wash sponges.
-
yeah, I was trying to formulate a question asking "do most people not wash sponges?" but I felt stupid.
-

I did and it was a very good show. Lots of fun and dancing. Ana Matronic is great, she fondled my moustache (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmcd9/423879982/). I was so elated that I lost my car (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmcd9/423880080/)

I would have probably spent more time with Jake or Baby Daddy, but you are basically Rock and Roll as far as I am concerned, Paul.
-
Oh wow, you must really come from Circumstances.
That's Alaska. I usually get the Safeway brand because it doesn't feature the obnoxious kid's mug on the box like Milkman does.
-
I would have probably spent more time with Jake or Baby Daddy, but you are basically Rock and Roll as far as I am concerned, Paul.
Well I did spend time with them too, but neither of them fondled my moustache.
-
Until they dissolve?
I pop mine in the dishwasher now - basically until I hesitate to dirty my greasy plates with the sponge. Although all mine start life as beer making equipment. Its one of the few circumstances in our household where my wife gets the hand-me-downs.
-
Well I did spend time with them too, but neither of them fondled my moustache.
Man . . . man.
Also, my mother has sponges that have been in the family since the Carter administration.
-
I have all sorts of weird childhood memories surrounding powdered milk (mostly at daycare, since my parents at least tried to keep us eating in the Lower 48 style at home), but what I really remember on this subject was my father staring at me while I ate a bowl of cereal dry. "Do you usually do that?" he said. "That's really strange."
I still usually eat cereal dry. Is that pathological?
-

Not if your parents made you use powdered milk, it's not.
-
When you eat cereal dry, do you still use a spoon?
-

I always eat cereal dry. Raisin bran, frosted mini-wheats, Fruity Pebbles, all if it dry. I actually have a box of CUNT yogurt Cheerios in my desk drawer at work in case I need a handful or two in the morning.

It depends on the size of the pieces. Generally, yes, but with Frosted Mini Wheats and other big chunky cereal I'll occasionally just use my hands.
-
Such as one eats popcorn.
I am totally with you on this, Vee.
-
About an hour ago I just read for the first time: "It's pronounced Teh-ah-tim-eh, sir"
And I hope you are the better for it. I just wish I had the book handy so I could have got the spelling right.
Dry cereal is awesome, all crunchy and grelicious. Milky cereal turns into tasteless sludge with alarming efficiency.
-

Frosted Mini Wheats are toooooo dry for me to eat without copious amounts of skim milk. Then again, I take meds that give me hella dry mouth, so your mileage may vary.
-

I used to take those same "meds", but I always ate Cap'n Crunch afterwards.

Did eating the Cap'n Crunch require ice-cold milk pods?
-
DAMMIT! I do not take those "meds". I get pee tested at random as part of being a medic, for pity's sake.

HELL OF TINY CANS for Cryptonomicon reference. <3

I've thought it, now I'll say it. Helping people sure ain't worth it...

It is NOT WORTH IT for me to risk my livelihood for getting high.
If I'm involved in ANY sort of accident, I get pee tested. Like...if the roads are slick and someone slides into me and kisses the bumper, even if it's not my fault I have to take a UA. I have not been in any accidents yet, so I haven't gotten pee tested since my hire-on UA. The weather here is shitty enough that stuff happens all the time - I've just been lucky that I haven't been driving when accidents have happened.

Same thing with me, due to DOT regs (even though I only drive a desk). I don't take the chance.

Well, you know, you can do a lot of damage driving a desk.

I don't know about urine testing, but hair samples hold drugs in them forever. There have been studies done on Egyptian mummies that tested positive for marijuana after thousands of years. Which is rather odd, really, when you consider that the plant is native to the New World. They apparently also had access to cocaine and tobacco.
Of course, the mummies could have passed urine tests with ease, if only they'd hidden their bladders in canopic jars. Which they didn't. The criminal mind always sets its own traps - that's what you get for messing around with Mary Jane, people.

Right but it is not as though your hair 10 years from now will know what you did today. New hair replaces old hair at a decent rate. I took hair and urine tests for my job and they measured the hair such that it went back 3 months.

There's a theory that this is why Britney Spears shaved her head--K-Fed was going to have her drug tested in their custody case, and she got everyone to think she was just losing her mind when in fact she was destroying the evidence.

My brother is the "forensics expert" at a lab that tests piss, hair and saliva for drugs. Basically, it means he is third in charge of the department he is into. If you guys want me to ask him questions about How That Works, I can totally pass them along and post them here, if you like.
I don't know them off-hand, though, I'm not a good enough listener, I guess.

According to Slate (http://www.slate.com/id/2160383/) CA only allows urinalysis

Yeah, it seems likely to me that she's just batshit crazy.
Of course, she could have been thinking about the drug testing angle and not known what is specifically allowed or not in any given state, but I think even that is giving her too much credit for reasoning. She needs to go away and be a rich person figuring out what to do with the next 50 years of her life.

people...
she looks really hot with the shaved head. Maybe she is going for the demographic of guys who like this.

I don't like my womens stubbly.
-
I dunno. The "surprised human lightbulb" look has never been my cup of teaties.
That's close enough to testes that I'm just going to consider it equivalent.
-
A cup of testes sounds like an appetizer at Jeff Dahmer's place.
-
I like the familiarity implied by your calling him "Jeff".

One of the best small-press comics I've ever read was called "My Friend Dahmer"...
An autobiographical story by the artist who... while wasn't quite friends with Dahmer... was, in high school, enough of an outsider where he and Dahmer were acquaintences and, further, the artist and his friends looked upon the early manifestations of Dahmer's madness as ironically-funny... to the point where they had a small "Jeffrey Dahmer fan club".
It was fuck*ng amazing.
Especially for me, as someone whose school would've blown up if not for the fact that an outsider who I was on okay terms with if he hadn't been so shoddy in building his bombs that he blew his arm off first, before he could get to us.
If you ever run across that comic, seriously, read it. It. Is. Rad.
