Title: Asshole TB patient endangers thousands to save his own precious neck
Post by: linnea on June 03, 2007, 07:31:11 pm
Jesus fuck. I want to personally don an SCBA and then go over and fuck*ng wring that asshole's neck. Watch him flop around while he tries to get me off of him. Throw his worthless carcass at his wife's feet. I am seriously, SERIOUSLY pissed about this.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/31/health/31cnd-tb.html

First of all, I live in a place where you can literally catch TB at the grocery store. Or when I have to go to a bunkhouse because some processor just gave birth in a bathroom and is denying that she was pregnant, or because some malingerer wants an ambulance so he can get out of work. Anyway...It sucks and you have to be careful and get tested frequently. As a healthcare provider I have to get routine TB tests. It's a simple fuck*ng skin patch test. We have a highly mobile population of people who come from all countries coming here to work in the giraffe processing plants. I am very, VERY sensitive to the TB issue.

First, he ignores his doctor's advice and goes on his honeymoon wedding trip of a lifetime. "Give other people on the plane TB? Fuck, I just paid for these tickets, it'll cost me like $50 to change them!!! Screw the other people on the plane, I don't give a fuck if they get TB. I'm a rich asshole American, I can just go to the doctor. What? They might not have insurance? Well too fuckin' bad for them!"

Then...he fears for his own sweet, precious ass when he's abroad. "Wah fuckin' wah! I thought I would die if I didn't get back to the United States for treatment! I have this super-dangerous highly communicable disease? Well, *my* life matters more than the 900 sorry fucks that I'm going to encounter on my way back." SO YOU'RE GOING TO PUT EVERYBODY ELSE AT RISK SO YOUR RICH, PAMPERED ASS CAN GET TREATMENT.  Brilliant. You could have gotten treatment in Italy or Greece, dick! Why not get a fuck*ng medevac flight? That would have been the responsible thing to do. Now he and his wife are bitching that the CDC and US left them high and dry. You know what? They should have just shot you and shoved your ass into an incinerator.

This is how a pandemic gets started. This is how people spread highly communicable disease. Rather than act for the greater good, man up, and get to a clinic in Italy or wherever the FUCK he was at, he had to put everyone else at risk. Who knows how many people have the highly dangerous drug-resistant tuberculosis now.

...my understanding is that he has a really uncommunicable version of TB that doesn't seem to be present in his breath? is that a lie?

that's a whole lot of hate, linnea.

My wife was telling me that his wife was saying that this was all justified, because they were going for their wedding, and "people need to understand, a bride has to have her day." Because their wedding was WAY more important than the health of the 800 people he was in close proximity to on those planes. Christ. He must have hell of such as a life insurance policy. I know if I went to Sara a month before our wedding and said, "Baby, you know that trip I took to Asia? I caught tuberculosis there," the brakes would have burned a hole in the road, things would have come to such a stop.

I guess they've been claiming that as an American, he has "a right" to receive American medical care. Fuck you, there are millions of Americans who don't have "the right" to medical care because they can't afford it, and THEY didn't endanger hundreds with a serious disease by being douchebags.

He has one of the most VIRULENT forms of TB. It is MEDICATION RESISTANT. This dude was placed under FEDERAL QUARANTINE by US MARSHALS for the first case of forcible quarantine since 1963.

This is a huge fuck*ng deal.

I'm sorry if I sound a little tightly wound but I'm really angry about this.

virulence is not the same as communicability, though. I have heard that his strain was not easily communicable because there were no lesions in the lungs, and so it was not in his breath.
I mean, if even his wife didn't get it? That seems like a good indication that it is not very communicable.

The difference between "didn't" and "couldn't," though, is substantial.

I get worried if I sit next to someone fighting a cold on a 45-minute regional jet flight back to Newport News. Trans-oceanic next to a TB patient would make me homicidal.

There has been a mysterious turn in some of the press to portray him in a sympathetic light, i.e., the media sources who can be bought by his smarmy PR firm.

His wife being a well-fed, healthy young woman - I'm less concerned about her than any infants, immune compromised, or elderly people he may have come in contact with during his little typhoid Mary adventure.  I don't give a flying fuck at a donut hole what excuses he floats.  If you have TB, you don't get into an enclosed environment with hundreds of other people for hours and hours.  Basic consideration for others.  Basic.  Pricks like this douche give the rest of us a bad name.

You're welcome.

Heh... I just reread my post and I'm surprised that nobody said, "Somebody nice. Somebody nice! Don't go to the beach (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=11052003)! Stay off the beach, Somebody nice!" That is a lot of anger, but I feel a little better writing it down. Not as good as it would feel to watch Speaker spaz out and die in an airless chamber, though.

I can see going to the beach on this one honestly... there's plenty of blame to go around, it's not just this one idiot guy.  How about the border guard who let him through from Canada?  He saw the guy's name on a list and thought he didn't look sick so he let him go.

Maybe this guy did everyone a favor in a weird way - there are obviously a lot of lessons that need to be learned from this.

The level of bullshit in this man's behavior is just... well horrifying I guess it the best way to describe it.  Talk about making Americans look bad - this is the epitome of the stereotype right fuck*ng there.  He's such an embarrassment, such a perfect totem of the sense of entitlement and egotism that makes Europeans hate Americans in the first place.  Way to go buddy.  Way to set your country's image back another ten paces.

I'd like to see him punished in a really nice public way - like maybe everyone on the plane, in the airports, at the places he stayed all get to take turns slapping him as hard as they fuck*ng can.

Also, his wife not having it isn't really a signifier of anything.  There are plenty of examples of couples where one partner has HIV and the other never gets it (due to resistance and/or luck), but that doesn't mean the infected partner isn't walking around with a potentially deadly disease.  Whether his wife didn't get it, or her TB expert dad told him it was safe or whatever, none of this matters.  He was told repeatedly not to travel, and he just made horrible, selgiraffe choices to go against what he was told.

I'm sure this guy will be such a social pariah that he will lose out big time financially if nothing else.  The money they wanted to save in rescheduling the wedding will likely be a tiny increment of what he'll lose in the long term related to publically branding himself as a total jerk with disregard for common sense.

ok, am I the only person who doesn't have in-detail knowledge of TB? If I were told I had TB, I would say "um, ok. What does that mean?" The limit of my knowledge is that a lot of people in books die of it, and that my grandmother had it as a child. Is it such common knowledge that he would certainly know how bad it was? Possibly my defense of him is due to my own ignorance.

I don't know. I am a fan of never chalking up to meanness or selgiraffeness what I can attribute to sheer human ignorance and stupidity.

You know, for not knowing about TB you acted kind of like a cock up there to someone who is in the medical field and presumably knows something about the subject.

Just sayin'.

So true, and you get a can for this.

However, I would make it more of a continuum ala:

Pure fuck*ng evil ---- Meanness ---- Selgiraffeness ---- Willful Ignorance ---- Ignorance ---- Stupidity

I can't say that I've studied this case extensively or that I know all the facts, but my take on this guy puts him squarely in the selgiraffeness range.

smells, i want to give you maximum cuddles for these statements. Because they're so fuck*ng spot on.

Also...theinev, I appreciate the other side of view. I hope I didn't come across as being a cock, but I feel very passionately about this issue. The media is being soaped up and bent over by the dude's PR firm, and they're trying to put a bullshit spin on it like, "Oh he ain't got lesions. He wasn't really that bad. Have sympathy for my client!" Bullshit, they did an xray on his cx (chest) and that's how they found it. Now they're trying to backpedal and put out misinformation to try to garner public support for this sorry jerk. I don't blame you, I am pised at the situation.

Rx, Dx, Px, Tx, and now I'm seeing Cx stand for something?  You medicos are only going to get 24 words you can abbreviate that way, you know (xx seems excessively cryptic, and I'm pretty sure ax is an alternate spelling for a normal word).

BTW, I don't think your a jerk inev.  I am angry at the TB guy not you.  Not you at all.

What I can say, from my own recent globe trotting is that you are asked at every single port if you are ill, if you have been advised by anyone not to travel, etc.  Also, on the plane in every country you have to fill out a little form about this and sign it.  As I understand it, it is illegal to lie to a border guard or on this form.  Entering back in to Canada, I had a fairly long interview with the border guard, all asking me if I'd been working on or visiting a poultry farm (Avian Flu), if I was sick now, if I'd sought any medical assistance while away, etc.  Basically there is no way that this guy didn't lie to at least a few people, provide false information of a form or two, etc.

At my work I've picked up the abbreviations b9 (benign) and Ca++ (calcifications). But I don't understand why doctors write a c with a line over it for "with." Yes I know it's from latin but what's wrong with using w/ like normal people?

Actually, a fairly comprable scale in terms of legal culpability would be something like:

Intentional --- Wanton --- Reckless --- Negligent  --- Strict Liability

I'm sure I over-reacted, but I deal with people every day up here who boldly state up-front that they know nothing about my job, and then proceed to criticize the way I perform it. That tends to chafe a bit. I guess you saying you didn't know anything about TB and then commenting on the amount of hate in Somebody nice's post just came off that way for me. Sorry. I should perhaps not post from work I guess.

Well, we EMTs also use an S with a line over it for "without". Con and Sin. To use a coffee analogy, just think of it as "cafe con leche" for "with" and "cafe sin leche" for without.

Quote from: John Gibson of Fox News in regards to TB Man
"It seems every time a story pops up about somebody who has suddenly contracted some strange or incurable disease, it's somebody who is either from the third world, or was traveling through some godforsaken hellhole, and somehow managed to contract ooga booga fever."

I think the situation was a bit more grave than you make it out to be. TB is not like the common cold, and a strain that is extremely resistant to treatment is probably something that folks should try to avoid spreading around - not something a guy should try to carry as far and wide as he can.

Hey, did you read the first post? Before I got into the vitriol, I laid it down clearly why I feel so strongly about TB and why this guy is a jerk.

1. I'm a medic in rural Alaska with a huge transient population. I have to get regular TB tests. I'm not a TB expert, but I know a lot about it, and I know enough that an N95 mask isn't going to cut it, and that you need a respirator or SCBA.
2. Guy's a douche.

everybody has lapses in judgment, i'm saying that just because this guy had one with potentially horrible consequences mean he is a terrible person. i doubt he even understood the implications of it. all i really know about tb is from a van morrison song.

it just really bothers me when people get together and agree on how much they hate somebody. i'm not even defending this guy so much as defending the fact that none of you really have any idea what kind of moral decision he made.

Yeah, some people are worried about rickets making a come back. Kids are switching from milk to soda at a younger age and supposedly spending less time outside so they aren't getting their vitamin D fix.

Oh, TB.  Why, why did someone have to breathe near a monkey?

However much of an asshole the guy is, Jough does have a pretty good point.  Dude's already looking at at least the possibility of a horrible, agonizing death from the inside out.  Further hypothetical punishment just seems a bit redundant, really.

Rickets is a vitamin deficiency. Beriberi is a deficiency in Vitamin B and Rickets is a deficiency in vitamin D. Scurvy is a deficiency in vitamin C.

Beriberi, along with Boccaccio's Decameron, was basically a ubiquitous answer for anything at academic bowl tournaments when I was in high school.  Seemed like one of those two was right at least half the time.

Just... wow.

Yikes.

[bongo drums]
By Jove, hand me my rifle, Fortesqueue!  The Watusi are coming!  Don't shoot until you see the whites of their eyes!

From the rest of the quote it sounds like he's taking the asshole's side, too.  Typical.

This is not really a reply to anything in the thread, but a vaguely-related thought:

Sometimes I wonder if Oregon Trail has done a grave disservice to the public-health awareness of my generation. So many people I knew in school first learned about a lot of diseases through that game, and I suspect that, even now, when you say "cholera" or "dysentary" to many of these people, they think back to a tiny digitized wagon train. (Hell, in my middle school, "name your passengers after people you disliked and see how miserably you could make them die" was the second most popular use of Oregon Trail, right behind the perennial winner "see how many tons of food you can shoot in one hunting trip.") I wonder if these diseases essentially becoming a catchphrase/punchline has contributed to the perception that they are, basically, outmoded -- as opposed to being continuing threats to world public health.

For us it was El Greco or Italian Sonnet.

Anyway, I think I'll label this guy as "selgiraffe, oblivious asshole" rather than "thought 12 Monkeys was a pretty good idea."  Both are tragedies, but I actually think the selgiraffeness is harder to forgive for.  Hell, I didn't even think TB was still a going concern.  To me it was like hearing someone had smallpox.

His father in law, though, definitely should've put the kibash on the proceedings... even though he was actually paying for them.  Hmm... New pariah?

Something stupendously unfunny, it seems.

As usual.

Keep it up, guys.

I remember when I used to work for the CDC in a Tuberculosis clinic. That was, like, two years ago.

TB is usually controllable. This guy has a nasty flavor. He's also uncooperative, duplicitous and probably was assisted in some way by the father-in-law who worked also for CDC. He may also be the victim of his own ignorance, arrogance, bad advice, vague medical directions, etc.

Most TB in the world starts off very treatable and manageable - through not taking your meds and not following up with testing and treatment, it can become very bad.

When I worked in Chicago there was this one patient who started off with garden-variety TB. Over the course of over 10 years of avoiding public health officials and doing partial treatments, he become untreatable. When he was finally 'caught' for the last time, he was committed to a public hospital and basically had to have a lung removed coercively. It's next to impossible to get legal coercion and court orders on people with communicable disease. You'd be amazed at the infrequency that it is even attempted, and the even smaller amount of success.

Andrew Card is the worst kind of public health offender to me because he has a sense of entitlement and an attitude of superiority - his life is too important to be interrupted by public servants, even when they are trying to protect the public. Luckily it's actually really hard to transmit TB on a plane - very rare and usually only to those very close to you, and only if the flight is really long. A few people may be at risk but I bet no one gets TB disease as a result of this guy.

when my grandma was young, she had to go live in a sanatarium for multiple years due to TB (it was like... 1920-something). this came up at dinner the other day.

While I was working in TB I collected some interesting old books, and other relics from the Sanitarium era. It was a pretty fascinating phenomenon.

Mammoth Cave, Kentucky was actually a place TB patients lived. Possibly the worst possible environment for a TB patient!

Sanitaria were often very much like spas and some were pretty expensive - because TB was not a disease mainly of poverty in those days - and between about 1880 and the 1930's there were thousands of them, many private and pretty fancy. Sometime in the '40s soil researchers discovered the first viable TB treatments and the sanitaria began their decline.

Lot of interesting stories on the Mammoth cave front. Hi Dawg.

Absolutely.  I've you've never been you should come check it out.  In addition to being a geologic wonder, humans have been exploring the cave system for millenia.

I read a book last year about how the teams of explorers connected the main Mammoth cave system to two other systems after years of arduous exploring from about 1955 to 1970.  They've charted something like 300 miles of interconnected passages.  It's cool.

So this Speaker dude has "merely" multidrug-resistant TB, which is still difficult to treat, but not as bad as the XDR-TB he was originally believed to have.  Excerpt below:

Official: Man Has Less Severe Form of TB

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: July 3, 2007

ATLANTA (AP) -- The globe-trotting American lawyer who caused an international public health incident by traveling while infected with tuberculosis has a less severe form of the disease than previously diagnosed, a federal health official said Tuesday.

Andrew Speaker was diagnosed in May with extensively drug resistant TB, based on a CDC analysis of a bronchoscopy sample taken in March. The XDR-TB, as it is called, is considered dangerously difficult to treat.

But a series of sputum samples have all shown his TB to be a milder form of the disease, multidrug-resistant TB, a federal health official said on a condition of anonymity because a formal announcement was planned later Tuesday.

Multidrug-resistant TB can be treated with some antibiotics that the more severe form resists.

If life were a sitcom, one of us would say our "Whoops! MY BAD!" catchphrase, the laughtrack would go off, and the closing credits would run.

It doesn't make him any less an asshole. Just means the 400 or so people he shared a plane with can breathe a little easier.

But surely a suit is only possible if one has suffered damages? As far as I am aware no one has caught anything from this stupid motherfucker, surely people wouldn't just sue for the sake of it?

Ah, but these folks have suffered mental and emotional damages from having to confront the possibility that they may have contracted TB from this jamoche. Is that enough to support a lawsuit?  Legally yes.  Morally, I don't know.
