For the ladies-
I've had a lot of issues with my ovaries lately. I was on hormonal BC (Organon and then OTC-lo) from April to November of last year, then I stopped because it was affecting my mood negatively. This March, I had to go to the ER when an ovarian cyst ruptured (OUCH). Subsequently, an ultrasound found that I have a LOT of cysts on my ovaries.
Then this summer, I didn't have a period for close to three months. When I saw my gyno about this, he gave me some hormones to kick-start my cycle, and gave me a NuvaRing sample. The ring went in Sunday night, and I've liked it so far, except that tonight I fugued over a missing puzzle piece (seriously, I'd been working on the puzzle for two weeks and two pieces were missing. Pissed me off.). Kicked a lot of shit, yelled at my friends, threw & broke my phone, which caused a further freakout, though not in anger. I am not normally the kind of person who freaks out over the littlest thing, nor do I get angry easily, so I'm thinking it's probably the ring.
Should I stick with it? Who's tried it?

There's a tired, scientific saw about not confusing correlation with causation - isn't it more likely you're reacting to the stress of the resuming school year?

I am not lieing when i say dudes starting rugby are advised to freeze some sperm.... maybe you could look into some preservation before your science experiments go wrong.
-
My girlfriend has been using the Nuva for years, she has zero complaints.
She is manic-depressive, no less, and it seems to have slightly helped that, if anything.
It COULD be the change in hormone levels from the ring, Rumjay, but I'm thinkin' that it's probably low on the list of things that it could be.
I mean, the whole premise of the Nuvaring is that you can have a lower dosage of hormones to prevent babies if the hormones are right at the sexy source, correct? That's how it was explained to me, anyway.
I have generally noticed that everyone is on edge and closer to madness lately, man, woman, child, et cetera, as we are in an endless war and our economy is teetering on the edge of collapse and a whole lot of religious folks want the world to end very very soon and so on.
There is something TO the idea of Collective Subconsciousness. It's not necessarily a mystical or psychic thing but there's something to it.

Why was not having a period a problem? I have nothing good to say about having periods. Right now I'm taking pills without a break in order to try not have a period on purpose (because I get migraines at my period aside from other horrible discomfort and misery). Sounds like you had a good deal and now you messed it up... But if you think the ring is a good idea, I guess I would wait to have one more freakout, personally, to be sure it's a side effect that's going to persist.

I have not tried NuvaRingDingDoodle, I'm one of the few ladies with a highly sensitive cervix so I don't want to try it out cause I'm pretty sure it'll interfer with my pleasure. I have been on various forms of the pill for quite some time and have had adverse reactions to some that sound a lot like what you're experiencing. I mean... I was fucked up.
I've been thinking very seriously about getting an IUD if the SO won't get a vasectomy, but I hear the period related pain and bleeding is much worse... so I don't know. I basically don't want to be on the pill anymore and don't know what to do. There are so few ladies on the board... I doubt even a genearl consensus among all of us is all that relevant.

I'm a guy. I never have known anybody who has tried this device. I will just say that I hope everything works out for you RMJ, and side_show, can we discuss the above somewhere else in private?

Ovarian cysts SUCK. Are they "functional cysts", or does the doctor not know? I had one assholish, patronizing doctor try to tell me that my ruptured ovarian cysts (vomiting, extreme pain, unable to move) were somehow normal. He explained to me that your ovaries make at least a new cyst every month as part of the normal ovulation process - an egg ripens, it moves to the surface, the cyst ruptures (mittelschmerz is the pain that some women feel during ovulation), and the ova/ovum get kicked into the fallopian tube. No shit, Sherlock - I've been menstruating normally since around age 10 and I know when something is wrong. Especially unexplained acute abdominal pain that feels like a ruptured appendix, which is how it feels when you've got a ruptured ovarian cyst.
I have had cysts rupture on 3 occasions but only was able to seek medical attention for the last one, which is when I had an abnormally large, 5-10cc cyst that ruptured. They didn't seem too concerned about it, but I've never felt pain like that in my life. After the constant vomiting they had to give me about 3 liters of IV fluids. They don't give you anything for pain in the ER, though (at least, they wouldn't give me jack shit for pain management when I was there). Fuckers. When I was released they gave me some Vicodin which I never took because it makes me queasy.
Anyway, I've never tried the NuvaRing, but all the women I know who've tried it just love it. I would not want to put it in there, but some women are okay with that. Do you leave it in during sex? I had the shot (Depo Provera) which fucked with my mood so horribly that I would not recommend it to anyone. A friend of mind has an IUD and likes it. I'm not sure what kind of birth control I will get on once I'm in a relationship, but I'll probably go back to oral contraceptives again.
Also, if your period is late for no apparent reason, you can get some Raspberry Leaf Tea (http://www.traditionalmedicinals.com/?id=30&pid=15) (that is the kind they sell at the grocery store. You can buy it far cheaper if you buy the loose herb at the health food store). Brew a really strong cup with 3 teabags, cover the cup, and let it steep for about 20 minutes. Adding ginger really helps too, but be forewarned if you get this shit (http://www.newchapter.info/product/product.lasso?-Database=NewChapter&-KeyValue=112&-Search=Action&-Table=P_Web_S) because you'll be tempted to suck it out of the jar because it's so delicious. From what I can tell, the raspberry leaf helps strengthen and tone your uterine muscles?

I know a lady who has the copper IUD with the small amount of progesterone, and she does not have a period at all. She has never had a child, but in rural AK the doc there wouldn't give me an IUD because I'd never had a kid. I guess they weren't very experienced with installing IUDs in women who'd never had kids. In any large city they should be able to do it, though.
-
I can't help with the NuvaRing, as I have very bad reactions to any hormonal form of birth control (migraines, among other things) and I am fairly certain that the brief period during which I took a low-dose pill resulted in such a complete alteration to my body chemistry that when I stopped taking it I didn't ovulate again for three years. Instead, I bled for six weeks at a time with about a week to ten day break in between. For three years. While my OB/GYN told me there was nothing wrong with me.
Not to scare you. Hormonal difficulties run rampant in my family, and I know of nobody of blood relation to me who has been able to tolerate the pill. So there's a good chance it's a genetic intolerance.
I did have a friend who had an IUD put in after her third child was born, and had it removed less than a week later. She said it hurt -- she could feel it all the time. She is kind of a pansy when it comes to pain, but then again, do you want to be able to feel a copper wire in your uterus 24/7?
If anyone finds a good birth control method, though, particularly one that doesn't involve hormone treatments, let me know. I (heart) my diaphragm, I've had good experiences with the sponge, and of course there's always the good ol' trusty condom. But there's something to be said for spontaneity, of course. "Please wait here, darling, while I apply this foul-tasting jelly to my cervix" is not exactly a turn-on for most men.
But until the FDA approves the Male Pill (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3543478/), it's all we've got. (Warning: linked article from MSNBC is incredibly sexist. It was the first google hit and I'm lazy.)
Of course, you could always just do what I do -- get knocked up and you don't have to worry about it again for three quarters of a year -- longer if you breastfeed. But then, that might not be what you're looking for...
-
ive been hearing about the male pill for like 5 years now and Im still waiting. I dont know what the big deal is. Bring the shit on.

Wouldn't the Minimalizing Chauvanistic Response actually be "oh, you ladies with your pu$$y problems... take a Pamprin and get me a beer"?
My "well, maybe you're just becoming physically aware that Western Civilization is collapsing" theory is a lot of things, most of them completely insane, but sexist? No, sir.
-
I'm pretty sure the chauvinistic response would be "Bitches gotta take their cunt pills." (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=02062004)

Guilty as charged. Nosy, opinionated, and loves the ladies.

I never said it was a perfect plan.
My OB told me breastfeeding isn't 100% reliable as a birth control method and is basically worthless as soon as the kid starts any kind of solid food. But then, the only birth control method I know of that's 100% reliable is abstinence. Clearly, that ain't gonna fly with anyone around here.

I feel like here I am supposed to say "hey, it's working pretty well for me!"

Def mention the PCOS to your doctor. He or she should be able to look at you and say, "You don't seem to exhibit the other symptoms (facial hair, etc.), but I'll run some tests." Maybe it will pique some other stuff in their doctorbrains and they'll think of some other tests.
-
Just please don't let them tell you there's nothing wrong with you if you feel there is something amiss. I was told that I was "too young" to have fertility problems and advised to have more sex. (Obviously my doctor didn't know me very well.) Change doctors if you need to. I went to three different ones before I found someone willing to sit and listen to me rather than just order another expensive test.
I went through the wringer for three years when a single course of a safe drug that's been on the market for thirty years was all I needed to kick-start my ovaries. When I finally found the right doctor, he figured out the problem in a single office visit. So don't let them push you around. There are many great OB/GYNs in the world, but in the event that you don't happen to be seeing one of them, don't be afraid to switch.

Not true. Stephen Colbert's Formula 401 is effective at a distance of up to 5 meters from a fully clothed woman.
Now Nabu's Formula, that's a whole other story.

ARGH!! That is so frustrating to read. I'm glad you finally found one who would listen to you. Jeez.

Word. This is true about basically everything. If you think there is something that doesn't seem right, keep trying until you get a doctor that will listen. I have several instances in my own immediate family of doctors saying "that's normal" until one said "yeah, that there is fucked up, but we can fix it".

Oh, I suggested it. He said it's unlikely since I'm fairly slim, but a possibility.
-
Personally, I've always been paranoid about PCOS because I have a lot of the peripheral symptoms (chunky, with more hair on my face than I'd like), but I've never had any trouble with my period and have never been more than about two weeks late (and that was a one-shot thing when I was dealing with a lot of stress). That said, I'm a hypochondriac, and there's always the appeal of knowing you have something medically wrong with you and aren't just ugly.
Anyway, I've been wondering about birth control options myself. The issue is that I'm in a sufficiently long-distance relationship that it seems stupid to take something all the time when it'll only be necessary once every few months at most, so I've been procrastinating, but at some point it'd be nice. (Especially since the Gentleman Caller is a condom whiner.)

All men are condom whiners. No man is joyously constricting his manhood in a rubber sheet that covers the exact part used in sexy times. "Oh yea, I love wearing condoms, I hate actually feeling sex, that is so overrated"
-
Still hell of a lot better than not gettin' any, A-CAP. No glove = no love.

Maybe it's because I was a child of the '90s (and my EMT training), but I am all for body substance isolation. The more protection, the better. Condoms are great.

I think i lost 2 cans for that, so let me clarify, i know guys who refuse to wear condoms and try various means of still getting a girl to do the deed. I am one of the guys who lives with the glove, because I need some love. Im just saying that i dont know of a single guy who prefers condoms over no condoms.

A-CAP, I have restored you a can for being entirely sensible about this issue.
Seriously, condoms are wonderful things and bring a lot of good to the world, but surely you can appreciate that life wouldn't be quite as joyful if you had to wear latex cloves to stroke your cat?

Nicely put, 'bagas. A can to you to maintain harmony and balance.

I am much more in the "Get into a monogamous relationship where disease is no longer a question so that basically you are down to using chemicals strictly to prevent pregnancy and condoms aren't necessary" camp.
If I was a place in my life where I was tomcattin' around, of course I would use condoms... but, then again, sex is pretty much 50% as awesome with a condom.
Still more awesome than anything else in a mortal's life, of course, but only half of the real deal.
-
Yeah, condoms are fine with me -- I can't tell the difference one way or another -- but I do have to say that the burning-rubber smell afterwards is sort of a buzzkill.
I'm with lfm. Monogamy is awesome.

For the same reason as JL, my fiancee is off of hormonal birth control as well. (As a matter of fact, she used NuvaRing for two years until her doctor recommended that she try going off birth control. The migraines stopped almost right away.) So we're six weeks away from married and a condom couple. Your choice of condom makes a world of difference, though. I highly recommend these (http://www.pleasureplus.com/), available at your local CVS.

Does anyone use sponges or spermicide any more? I used to use spermicide with condoms... but that got expensive as my volume of sex increased.

on a different note, I use platinum-based condoms (it's an experimental new composite) with an enriched-uranium-based spermicide.

If condoms do such a bang-up job of reducing your sensitivity, then why don't men have marathon endurance while wearing condoms? I'm just sayin'.
-

Because sex actually happens in your brain, where you're thinking "I'm banging a lady! Hot!", plus there's a reminder of some distant stimulation coming up from your junk.
-
Wearing a condom is like getting five outta six numbers in the lottery.
You're not a multi-millionaire but, holy shit, three hundythou is still pretty fuck*ng awesome.
I would still basically flip out.

In regard to condoms, they definitely do slow things down for some boys... but for those who speed up, maybe they hate it so much they just want to get it over with?
Certain condoms are just stunningly bad. I don't get some of them - don't the designers understand that less rubber is better? Worst Condom Ever. (http://www.trojancondoms.com/productdetails.aspx?product_id=19) When I saw these in the store I said "Why would they make a condom that looks just like a screw? You can actually screw someone. Is that what they were thinking?" Unfortunatly the SO thought this was so entertaining that he bought them.... fuckin' terrible.

I am generally pretty condom-positive, but gah. That is a terrible condom.

That is the weirdest reservoir tip I've ever seen!

The particular shade of the packaging makes me think of key lime pie.
It doesn't help that the reservoir tip looks distinctly like a healthy dollop of whipped cream.

even I know that that is not anywhere near to a lady's most sensitive areas. How can they lie like this?
they are based on a lie.

Condoms reduce my sensitivity enough to where I find it useful to get pharmaceutical assistance to combat the situation. I'll wear 'em, but I can't say I enjoy them. However, I enjoy being safe a lot more than I dislike a condom. I gotta say, though, I think if a guy doesn't have a really compelling reason against it, investing in getting snipped is like buying Microsoft stock in 1977.
-
It's been a long time since I've had to slap on the latex (hooray, birth control and monogamy!), but I never saw it as being that big of a deal. I actually find that I last a bit longer with a condom on, since there's enough sensory deprivation that it makes it easier for me to stretch it out.
And yeah, that's a weird ass condom.

I have a latex sensitivity/allergy so the non-latex condoms like Avanti are the bomb. They don't smell bad at all. Have you guys given those a shot? The only downside is that they cost like a million dollars a box.

I'm sorry, baby - I've been under a lot of pressure at work.
