first, I think, if it is as advanced as Oklahoma's system (sarcasm) they actually just take it out of your account if they can match the plate number to an account.

More importantly, police by those things always pissed me off bad.  Police on those roads piss me off in general though.

They just got around to installing cameras on our toll road after the Post revealed the the camera housings had been empty for about 15 years. Apparently they were just there to make you think you were being watched.

yeah, the intersection cameras in Virginia were all off for years. So far as I can tell, we are still kept in a state of confusion as to which are on.

Ash, just so i understand you clearly, Are you mad that the police are ostensibly trying to capture fines for jumping tolls, when in fact, the private road owners have already got that taken care of?

If the private company already has toll jumpers taken care of the police should be elsewhere, enforcing non-redundant violations.

I prefer the ones that are off to confuse me, to the ones that are on and actually give me tickets.

Yeah that seems dumb, especially if it's an entirely private road in which case I would think that how you mount your transponder is something to be handled between you and the company if it's a partly gubmint funded road I could see there being more leeway for government paid enforcement but it's still silly.
With those things around here if you drive through and it doesn't beep they have a sign right after the toll with a number you can call (as well as a camera to nap people who are trying to dodge the toll) as far as I'm aware if you just call and let them know it didn't go through they don't even charge you any extra.

I just realized a t-shirt I just bought and I'm wearing for the first time has a little hole in it. Like the kind you get from the dryer. Plus, since it's a brand new t-shirt it's like giant on me.

Dammit fucker, there's a turn lane for a reason. Don't turn right from the travel lane. Don't even kind of drift over into the turn lane so slowly that you're all the way to the intersection by the time you're out of my way.

Also, learn to merge. The zipper method was invented for a reason. The "stop in the middle of the merge lane with your turn signal on" method doesn't have a snappy name because it sucks so hard. Dipshits.
Title: Re: Daily stuff that pisses me off...
Post by: pmcd9 on August 16, 2008, 09:24:43 pm
This country used to know how to merge.  We've lost that ability so completely that around here they've changed all of the freeway exits so that merging isn't necessary.  I wouldn't even be able to calculate how much money was spent to accommodate people that can't merge.

Stopping in the merge lane should be a revocable offense.  If you can't merge, you lose your license.

If it's any consolation, he didn't write his first great opera till he was 24.

Then there is hope for me yet, I've got 6 years to write a great opera. That can't be too hard, plenty of time. I will call it Awesome in D Major.

Awesome in D Major.

Yes.

Today nothing in particular pissed me off, though it was a bit weird that a girl who worked a coffee stand with 'machiatto' on the price board did not in fact know how to make a machiatto. So I told her to give me a double shot of espresso with a tiny bit of milk.

This reminds me of a random question I had while waiting for somebody else at Starbucks: I overheard somebody order an americano, no water. I always thought the americano was a pussy drink in that it was watered-down espresso. So how can you get it with no water?
Title: Re: Daily stuff that pisses me off...
Post by: wombat on August 17, 2008, 01:56:04 pm
WTF. An americano is exactly espresso with water added. And the person just took this order without comment?

OK, Googling to see if there is a reasonable answer to this question just makes matters worse, now I want to go find a bunch of coffee geeks and punch them in the nose. Lighten up already people.

Let's go to Starbucks and ask for espresso, no water. They will have to hand over a handful of coffee grounds for us to munch on.

The worst part is that I've heard it several times from different people at different Starbucks. I don't get it at all. Maybe it's also a smaller shot or weaker coffee?

In HS a friend worked at McDonald's. She was always pissed at this one guy who would come at least once a week and order a Big Mac with no ketchup. Apparently a Big Mac doesn't come with ketchup. And this annoyed the shit out of her, but since she didn't work the box she could never correct the guy. Having never eaten a Big Mac I was also unaware of this.

OK, here's what pisses me off. I just went to the gym and had to give up and leave because the music was so annoying, and so loud that I couldn't drown it out with my own music player. In a world where 99 out of a hundred people have their own personal music playing device and headphones, why do they think it is a good idea to impose their taste in music on everyone?

I did ask them to turn it down but there was no perceptible change.

Dear radio advertisers,

Yes, we all know the end of the govt's fiscal year is coming up very soon. Now shut the hell up about it.

Sincerely,
Fricking Everybody

Dear insurance companies,

I know open enrollment season doesn't start for a coupe of months so you haven't started running 17,000 ads yet, but I know you're thinking about it. Don't. Nobody cares. Has anybody ever changed insurance companies because some woman who used to be on the West Wing told them to? I didn't think so.

Sincerely,
Fricking Everybody

Long story short, I needed to get my cable box replaced. (Interesting note: Called yesterday, was told that if I'd wanted to get the old box fixed, the first appointment was Wednesday. If I wanted a new one, they could come today.)

The appointment window is 2-5, during the whole time I am trapped in the house because Tech Staff has gone on a hike. Fair enough, he doesn't care if we have Japanese TV or anything else really.

The doorbell rings at 4:59 and 45 seconds. And the first thing the guy says is he looks at the TV and says it's not compatible, it needs a different box.

OK, now, he is reconsidering and trying to install it. I am not sure how it is going because I was so mad I had to leave the room. But FUCK, even if it does work - if there is an issue of what kind of box I need, why didn't they discuss this on the phone when I made the appointment????!!!!

And here's what I don't get. I understood why the cable company was incompetent when they were a monopoly. But we have a choice of companies now. But they BOTH suck.

Comcast and? Starpower?

Luckily I live a few blocks from a Comcast service center. So the one time I needed a new box I could just walk over and exchange it at the store on my schedule. And they have surprisingly good hours, even on Sunday.

We have Starpower.

I decided that that cable guy was actually an extremely skilled psychologist. I was mad when he was so late. So he decided to invent a terrible problem - that the TV was incompatable with the box - so that he could then solve it and be a hero instead of a guy who made me wait three hours for him to come at the last minute to do a fifteen minute job.

Dear Co-Worker,

If you want to put a flyer in the kitchen for your outside-of-work organization's charity raffle, I'm totally cool with that.  Then people who want to buy tickets can come get them from you.

I am NOT cool with you going door-to-door to everyone's office asking them to buy tickets, so we feel like dicks if we want to say no.  Not cool at all.  So, like, don't do that.

Thanks,
Carl

One of my coworkers adopted a baby and left on FMLA leave for three months. She returned for three weeks, and is quitting on Friday to go to another job that she hopes is more fulfilling than ours. She is one of three people in our department who does what we do (I, obviously, am another). Last week, I wrote to my boss asking what the plan was for replacing her. She said she had no idea. I told her that I was concerned her plan would be "give him all her work." So today, she cracked jokes about that being her plan. I'm concerned that it will, in face, become her plan. The whole company is under pressure to cut costs, and not filling the position would take a decent chunk out of our budget. I love my boss, I'd take a bullet for her, but between that, the baby coming, and the financial pressure I'm under, I'm one piece of bad news away from a nervous fuck*ng breakdown.

Tell her you'll take on the work for a rise equal to half the departing co-worker's pay. Still a good saving there.
Was there anyone covering for her while she was on leave? Couldn't they be kept on? Or is this where the grand plan originated.

Bingo... you're looking at the guy who did the covering. Me and the other guy, but he's been there forever and did a half-ass job with the parts he covered, so she won't add to his workload permanently.

Something very similar happened with the accounting department at my work. They lost 2 or 3 people, plus the CFO and naturally only the CFO was replaced. So everybody else started sandbagging until they hired more people. Although that couldn't work at all with just 2 people.

In the past year, five people have left* the team I am on, and I have been the only person hired to replace them, even though our "head count" technically would allow for at least two more.  Reading the writing on the wall, I may very well be the last person hired to work on my project, which is kind of disheartening.  As soon as our clients figure out the company's cut our product off, they'll be gone.

I love my job, but it is complex and I'm still trying to get the hang of keeping up a normal pace, much less one that is five times as efficient as one person.  Given that there are eight of us total now in a position that used to keep 25 busy... it's tough not to think about it.

Oh yeah, the reason I haven't posted here in like 2 weeks is because we're not moving our upcoming release date, despite the fact that there is no physical product to cause problems.  Half the team, two weeks cut from the schedule, and we get to "just figure out a way to make it work."  I LOVE self-actualization!

*Three went to other companies, two were moved up to management to replace other people who left.  Other teams at our company have been hit even worse.  Sometimes I wonder if upper management has ever wondered why they can't keep anyone any more.  Other times I'm pretty certain they don't care.

Still no update on what the plan is, but I did get offered the use of her car. She lives in Tennessee, and spends probably half of her work weeks in cities other than ours. She replaces tires more often than she should, not because they wear out, but because they rot from weeks at a time in a parking lot without being used. Since we're a one-car family after my car bit the dust, she asked if I would be willing to use hers on the days/weeks that she's out of town.

These are the kinds of weird things that go on in my work that make it impossible to have a "fuck this, I quit" moment. I may get a shitload of work dumped on me, but that happens in every job, especially in the tough times. Not every job has your boss say "You need a car, I need someone to drive this one. Let's solve each other's problem."

Since I won't have to carpool on these days, it works out to an hour of extra sleep for me in the morning.

Ultimately, I'm just pissed off that we're living on the other side of the mirror.

Trying to pretend the last sixty years of progress didn't happen is rebellious?

The news mistakes stating all sides of an issue neutrally as "reporting" instead of... you know... finding out what's going on and saying that.

The way we're demographically defined into our own smaller and smaller worlds, leaving the shared reality ignored and exploited by whoever's cruel enough to take it.

I don't know.

It's not that the bad guys win when the good guys do nothing.

It's that the bad guys win when the good guys are all really really into their little fuck*ng side projects.

Ah. You know me. I am, like the rest of the race, prone to paranoid ramblings at night.

Dear co-workers who handle documentation,

No, you don't have to spell out every acronym the first time it appears in a document.  That shit is overrated.  Please don't ask me what "SQL" stands for, just leave it as "SQL," because you will actually confuse more people if you spell it out.  And if our customers don't know what the three-letter acronym for their own agency stands for, they have bigger problems.

Thank you,
Carlos

I don't understand clock radios at all. I had to comparison shop forever to find one that doesn't function as a nightlight because the damn display is so bright.

I finally found a Sangean and it turns out the radio doesn't work. It can't pick up the single most powerful station in the area unless I'm holding the antenna wire. Yet the shitty radio in my shower pulls it in just fine. Oh, and it doesn't have a battery back-up because they claim it's not necessary since it's a self-setting atomic clock. Except there's apparently no signal here. And who wants a 5-minute snooze?

Dammit, a non-shittastic clock radio should not be this hard to find.

I have a timex clock/radio/cd thing that has an orange display with a dimmer dial, so the light brightness is adjustable. It also has the "play the radio/cd for 30/45/60... minutes then turn off" sleep mode that i love.

I spend half my life shopping for clock radios. They all suck. Yes, it makes it more complicated that I want one with a headphone jack and this is apparently not a normal concept. But when I find one, it often has the same problem as yours, I have to take it back because the radio doesn't work worth a damn.

And yet the Technical Staff uses the one that we have had for like twenty years and it's fine. I think this is one of those things that really has gone downhill over time.

Mine has to be at least twenty years old and it's still going strong. It might have the best radio reception in the house. No headphone jack though. Cort, maybe you should be checking out thrift shops.

I have a little atomic alarm clock my brother got me from some Sharper Image style store. The light only comes on if you touch the face panel, it shows the temperature (which is great because our thermostat's display is out of wack), and it makes a horrible beeping noise that always wakes me up.

Other best bedside item: a lamp that turns on and off when you touch it. I've wanted one since I saw one at my grandmother's house when I was a kid, and it is just as great as I imagined.

First to answer the headphones question.  I used to sleep with the headphones on until I lost my ipod.

I too have had a lot of shitty clock radios, but the one I have now is great.  I don't know if Cort would be bugged by the brightness of the display (probably), but it has great radio reception and two alarms.  No brand on it though.  Paid maybe $15 for it at Wal-Mart about 3 years ago.

I've decided to use a regular alarm clock and a separate radio we already had lying around. The clock is small enough that I can't see it over my nightstand without lifting my head. Which is perfect.

And the radio isn't like super high fidelity but considering its main jobs are to help keep me from falling back asleep after my alarm goes off and informing me of interest rate cuts at 7am sound quality isn't really a big issue.

I wasn't really focusing on the fidelity of the radio, but rather it's ability to focus on a station.  A talent that most clock radio's find surprisingly difficult.

Only one earbud in one ear is pretty safe.

I have lately pretty much broken myself of the habit, but I've done that before and then relapsed, so I won't buy one without the headphone jack.

Dear Administrative Assistant,

It's nice that you sent out a department-wide e-mail announcing the birth of the executive vice-presidents's grandchild.  Really, I'm cool with that.  However, should the opportunity arise again, I'd prefer you do not attach a 6 MB graphic to said e-mail.  If you must pretty it up, I'm sure you could find a clip art graphic that's like 30 KB instead.

Thanks,

Yeah, sorry I had to call in sick today. I haven't been sleeping and I'm starting to show some ill effect. It's really fine that you woke me up from my period of recovery from my exhaustion with a phone call asking me to fix some problem you caused late last night. No worries, I'm sure I'll be fine eventually.

Thanks,
Carlos

I want very badly to offer a class to our managers on Microsoft Office basics. We have too many who would benefit. There are people who are in charge of running our stations who still alleviate their problem with the Shift key BY JUST TURNING ON THE CAPS LOCK KEY. The ones who forward pictures by plugging the camera into the USB cord, and clicking "E-Mail Image."

My team of 9, that was already too small to support our users?  Now it's a team of 5.  The others were yoinked for a new project.  They say it's just for three months, but none of us believe them.

Management has decreed that we're going to pretend they weren't yoinked, because lying to your users is a great policy.

Your VP is obviously related to my editor.  Seriously, if you want a story about the history of previous president's pets to run after the election - which, aside from a brief mention of the president-elect's pet status, will be entirely composed of facts that existed before the election happened - why wait till after the election is over to ask for it? It's not like we didn't know when the election would be over, right? I think we could have predicted this.

Sigh. There is a reason I didn't go to journalism school. I hate working on short deadlines. I am not sure how I ended up in this situation, at all.

Opening a box of a new brand of teabags and finding that they have no strings.

WTF whoever thought this was a good idea? And don't tell me it's more environmentally goddam friendly. I don't have to throw strings away but I have to use water to wash the utensil with which I remove the teabag, so neither is free.

English teabags don't have strings.  Teabag strings is an American thing.  Most of the rest of the world doesn't even have the bag.

Mostly I don't use bags either, actually. So when I do use a bag the whole point is to dirty nothing but the cup.

The world has adopted many other American inventions. What is wrong with these foreigners? They eat McDonald's, but don't have the sense to use teabag strings!

Stringy teabags are the norm down here. I remember there were some stringless ones around for a while but I thing the idea was that they somehow got better circulation or something.

The latest in teabag technology of course is the bags with two sets of strings that you pull tight to wring out the bag after use, maximizing taste and minimizing unsightly tea-drip stains. The fact that this may be construed as wasteful and environmentally unsound just adds to the hedonistic joy of using them.

my mother taught me as a child that you put the bag on the spoon you used to stir the sugar in, and wrap the string around it so that it squeezes out all of the tea.
I found this brilliant, and still do.

Most of my teabags float regardless, so I use a fork to keep them sunk anyway. For shame! i know whatever

...but really i've only just gotten into drinking tea. I'm into chai, yerba maté, earl grey (of course), and I've got a nice white tea I found. What else should I look into?

You mean the bag divided into two parts for the better circulation? I hate to break it to you, Australia, but Lipton teabags with strings have been doing that for years. They are not mutually exclusive properties.

The two strings thing is hysterical.

Choop, this is a good place that sells lots of kinds of tea in sample sizes. Of course you want to ditch the teabags and make tea from loose leaves if you want to be serious.

http://www.uptontea.com/ (http://www.uptontea.com/)

If you like Earl Grey maybe try a good Darjeeling, it is similar but without the additional flavoring.

Do I mean for people I would classify as a douche, or for the activity of douching? I am not sure. But "Tea is for douches" is a beautiful phrase.

I need a word to describe this concept:  correcting for individual stupidity when calculating scores for online reviews.

I've long noticed this on recipe reviews.  Say there's a recipe for a dish that is overflowing with spices, then a reviewer comes along and says it's "absolutely bland and tasteless."  I am forced to conclude that this reviewer simply cooked the dish wrong.  Like, didn't have half the spices and so left them out, or had spices so old that they lacked flavor, or put in too much liquid, whatever. The thought that they fucked up never crosses their mind; no, instead let's log in and post a review saying the recipe sucks.

Similarly, of late I've been scoping out digital cameras, and I'm astounded at how often a camera will get good marks, four and five stars, and then there's one goober who gives it one star and complains about their problems.  One that stands out was someone who wrote "This camera takes terrible pictures in low light," a comment that was not echoed by any other reviewer.  I'm about 90% certain this person failed to turn on the flash.

The bottom line, I suppose, is that many people are idiots.  Not exactly a news flash, I know.

carlos-- I am wondering a similar thing about the reviews for winter coats I might buy.

I just need a review that says "I live in St Louis, MO, and walk about half a mile in this coat every day, rain, shine, below zero or up to let's say 40 degrees, and it is always perfect."

Internet reviewers are always a strange bunch.

I wouldn't say that it pisses me off... or matters really... but I do find it odd that I've dropped off 40 cans in, like, three days.

I know that I'm not exactly the most, ah, level-headed guy on the Earth but I'd like to think that if someone were THAT pissed they'd either face up to the idea that its just the internet or, you know, barring that, "tell me".

Unless its just that the troller from assbar leveled up to a canning level post-wise, just so that he could waste precious moments of his life slowly de-canning me.

Then that's goddamned hilarious.

My latitudes are a little north of yours, but I think our weather is probably pretty similar temperature-wise. I have had it for two years, and I never wear my pea-coat that I thought it would be cool to have. That coat is only for service on the gotdam Arctic seas.
Title: Re: Daily stuff that pisses me off...

Oh, see, I have a coat like that... I am thinking of something more down-y.

Maybe I am a big wimp. I have a peacoat and I think that it isn't warm enough. I end up wearing a long-sleeved t-shirt, sweater, bigger sweater, peacoat, gloves, hat, and scarf if it is below 35 degrees.
Maybe it's psychological... I have never had a really warm coat like that, at least not since I was a little kid. So when my parents constantly tell me that my peacoat is not warm enough, and that I am being stupid, I believe them at the same time as I am being stubborn.

Also, I am really, really skinny.

Another issue I have is that the reviews make me think the jacket I want won't fit me. Because of the skinny thing.

In the game of "Who Can Be The Bigger Asshole" I can always step up to the challenge and grab the gold.

I went to move my laundry from the washer to the drier (there are two of each) and this dipshit puts 5 pairs of boxers in one drier and a collection of shirts in the other. I am standing there with two washers worth of soaking wet laundry.
"Hey man, I need a drier, and I think your stuff could easily fit in one"
"Nah, I need to dry my boxers, my girlfriend is coming over."
"Thats great, bro, but I have a pile of wet laundry here and I need a drier. Can you move your stuff into one drier"
"no"
"so what am I supposed to do?"
"Go somewhere else, not my problem"
At this point I realize the game has gone into swing and he is not going to be a decent human being about this.
"So you're really going to be an ass hole about this, huh? You're suggesting I haul all of this soaking wet laundry across campus so you can warm your boxers? Ok....   I sure hope no one puts a marker or some bleach in your drier. That'd suck."
The threat hits his cerebellum, and its clear I don't intend on leaving the room so he considers the situation and
"alright. fine. take the drier man"
"Nooo.... I want you to have the drier now. I really do. I hope it works out for you."
So for the next half an hour, he's been standing there, watching his boxers warm.

High road? What?

See, until I read your later post I figured that the experiment actually had to be about something else entirely - it struck me as just too obvious a red herring. the kind you throw down when what you're _actually_ doing is recording their facial expressions as they go through each page of the questionnaire, or seeing how people respond to the innocuous questions when the other questions are insulting their politics.

I'm still not convinced it wasn't. Be on the lookout for another e-mail in two weeks explaining that the actual experiment was to observe your reactions to the first e-mail.

What pisses me off today is that my one-year-old eats more than I do.

Seriously.  I give her good, wholesome meals, and when I sit down with my plate, she wants whatever's on it.  Even if she's got the same thing on her highchair tray.  She wants food specifically from my particular plate.  So I cut it into toddler-sized portions and pass it to her, and she gobbles it down before I can get a bite.  And the next thing I know, my food is gone and I've barely had a chance to taste it.

Today, I heated up a lean cuisine *after* she had pretty much picked over her own lunch and was just playing in the mushed-up banana, and after eating a portion the size of the one I had placed on my own plate, she sat in her highchair and shrieked, desperately signing "noodles" until I gave her some of mine.

When the food was gone -- I managed to eat a little more than half of it, I think -- she signed "finshed" and I let her out of her highchair.  I was still hungry, so I got a bag of crackers and sat down to at least eat enough to fill my stomach before taking my antibiotics (sinus infection), and of course within seconds of my opening the bag, she was climbing up on my lap begging for more food.

This doesn't seem normal to me.  I shouldn't have to feel like I'm starving my daughter in order to have a meal.  The pediatrician already has us restricting her milk intake.  She's only one and 30 lbs!  That makes her roughly the size of the average THREE YEAR OLD (according to the CDC's growth charts).  Am I doing something terribly wrong?  I mean, she eats good food.  Whole grains, vegetables.  After having a son who doesn't eat basically anything, ever, I thought we were blessed to have a daughter who's not picky.  But she's going too far in the other direction, to the point where I can't eat a meal when I'm home alone with her and she's awake.  And since she also doesn't sleep as much as the average baby, that means that sometimes I have to wait until 2 or 3 PM for her to take a nap so that I can eat lunch.

That's what's pissing me off today.

I'm no CPA, and certainly know nothing about VA's tax code, but I think generally that kind of tax is for stuff you buy outside of VA and intend to use in VA, and it's sometimes called a "use tax." So the pizza would be exempt. Unless, that is, VA's tax code sucks worse than UT's or WA's. Either way, still shitty and I imagine hard to enforce.

I know it excludes items under a certain dollar value, but it's really low. Like $1 or $5. It also excludes anything that I already paid another state's sales tax for which is why I used PA since I know they don't tax food.

I think that the real problem with California, both sides all sides politically, is the goddamned referendums.

Some rich guy with a wild hair up his ass, left right or centre, hires a bunch of college kids to harass you in front of Albertsons to sign the fuck*ng petition... it gets on page 256 of the vote, heaven help us if its on an off-year election, and depending on how much money's behind it, how confusingly its written and how many people show up to vote, all kinds of fuck*ng crazy things can take a spot in the law.

Even if there's no funding for it, even if it turns out that the thing eventually isn't constitutional, even if it ends up doing the opposite of what it intended because it was poorly thought through.

It brings all the wackos out of the woodwork all the fuck*ng time and it gums up the process to no. fuck*ng. end. You try to find a pragmatic solution to something with no easy answers, you finally fuck*ng hammer it out and get it on paper... and holy crap, here come 15,000 AM radio hacks with recall petitions and blah blah blah, they don't even believe in the things they're saying, they're just tweaking the actual process of law making to pop their fuck*ng Arbs.

The guy from "Twins" is our fuck*ng governour because radio douches thought it would push ad-revs to throw the seated dude out who, while certainly a middling figure, actually had some grasp of governance.

And the left wing's just as bad as the right wing. For every racist immigrant hating dealy and "lets shut down the schools so I can save my tax money and buy a summer house in Palm Desert" tax recall hossshit, there's some unenforcable tobacco ban or three trillion dollars for a public transit project that'll never happen.

It's just too big a political unit for all the work of a whole class of middle-of-the-road experienced technocrats that HAS to happen to make a state work to be constantly undermined by a new utopian plan by some dick living in a fallout shelter in Palmdale or whatever every third day. There's a reason why you need representative democracy once you get over maybe 800 people.

Direct democracy is great for electing your class president in the fourth grade but... holy shit.

I swear to God that if this state could just have a legislature and a governor and they made the laws and if you didn't like what they were doing, you could vote them out every two-to-four Novembers, about half of the problems with dissipate like candy floss in a January drizzle. I realize there's all kinds of problems that wouldn't be fixed, of course, but at least you could make real efforts at fixing them, with continuity to the process, if not for the goddamned referendums.

Some plan goes wrong for more than two weeks, idiots start drafting recall petitions and everyone gets the piss shivers.

There's some truth to that, but since the districts are all Gerrymandered to hell (though hopefully a referendum passed in the last election will begin to address that) the pols in Sacramento and Washington aren't worried about your "vote".  Its certainly the only reason I can think of that Pete "Nancy is too centrist" Stark is still my rep.

The gerrymandering's a good point too.

Every district is either a lock for a psychotic Minuteman or a hippie who considers stepping on flowers to be murder. By design.

Doesn't exactly lend itself toward the sort of pragmatism that creates, you know, laws that actually work.

every year we have someone new in charge of Training at the radio station, and it is always someone who has never held any other position, and the person who comes before them never explains how to do anything or what they need to teach the kids, and every single year we all act surprised that the new crop of DJs are completely incompetent and don't understand the rules.

this year the training director decided that hands-on training with the equipment is just a hassle, and that it should be optional. WHAT. our general manager is one of my very good friends, but he has this hands-off management style which really doesn't work if someone is screwing up this badly. barf.

Ha - this reminds me.  In university, I was abrupty apointed the photo club trainer for darkroom procedures even though I'd only used the darkroom under half a dozen times.  Thankfully I just avoided the situation and only had to train one person, who clearly knew more than me about developing film.

for some reason it is thought of as like an "entry level" position when it clearly requires a lot of knowledge about how the station works.
I frequently talk to the trainers and find out they don't know about rules, or can't explain the rules, or don't know the reasoning behind rules... no good.
but on a more practical level, every new trainer has to come up with all their own procedures for organizing everything, because knowledge is not passed on.

Actually this happens in almost every position at the station. Almost every procedure we have related to organizing new CDs, getting them reviewed, etc. was developed by me, because the people who did it before me didn't teach me anything about how things should work.

This happens at every college in every student-run organization, it is not specific to your particular group. Hope that's some consolation.

But yeah, dude, write that shit down and pass it on. No need for future generations to be all reinventing wheels and shit just because that's the way it's always been done. I recommend putting it on Paper, print it off and put it in a three-ring binder, and passing it down in a small but elaborate ritual to your next-of-kin at the station when you graduate/move on, exhorting him or her to do the same to the next [your title here]. This will ensure that a mystique will develop around it, and people will do it your way for years to come, even after most people have arrived at the conclusion that your methods have become irrelevant or outdated. Whoever is in charge will say, "But we have to use the Burton method...it's how we've *always* done things!"

Bonus points for making the document look like it was printed in the '70s and passed down to you in a secret ceremony. (Find the worst copy machine on campus and make copies of copies of copies, dog-ear the pages, leave coffee rings on the leaves, drag the binder behind your car for a couple of miles.)

I thought of the ditto machine, but then I figured the originals would have been xeroxed several times since then. But you should definitely print them in a typewriter-style font, preferably with irregular spacing, and copy them cockeyed on the page. And make sure there are paper clips on some of the pages when you copy them for that authentic lazy-secretary look.

... while inexplicably referring to CD's and MP3's, but only of tunes from the 70's...

Cann'd for absurdity. That would be awesome.

Of course, I figured he'd just use the generic term "album" for everything, but this is so insanely, cleverly tongue-in-cheek it would be beyond hilarious.

Ridiculous.

I was at Target buying diapers and allergy medicine. This woman cuts me off to get in the 10 items or less line ahead of me, then proceeds to play out the following scenario:

First, she hands a raincheck ticket to the guy and asks if it's for the item in the ad that's on sale. He scans it, and tells her what the name of the item is. She says, "Is that (x) from the ad?" He doesn't know and has no way of finding out, so he refers her to customer service, but she keeps asking anyway. Finally, he says he'll print her a raincheck and she can come back when the item is back in stock and compare it to the picture in the ad before she buys it if she wants. Fine, moving on.

Next she has a blouse that was on the 75% off clearance rack. But she says it doesn't come up on the scanner at 75% off. (She obviously scanned it at a price check kiosk earlier.) He scans it, and it comes up at $6.24. She says, "See?" So he looks at the tag and explains that its original price was $24.99. And she says, "Yeah, so it should be less than $6.24." He just sort of stared at her for a few seconds, and then said, "But...$6.24 is 25% of $24.99, so it's 75% off." And she says, "No it isn't."

At this point, there's about half a dozen people in the express line, and I'm starting to look around for other lanes. (There aren't any with fewer than 4 people in them, so I stay where I am. Mistake.) So he says, "Well, I can't change the price, I have to charge you what it rings up as." So she decides she doesn't want the blouse, and the cashier puts it to the side.

Next, she brings out three dresses. Two of them are black with rhinestones, and one of them is navy and plain. She shows him that the navy one is $6 and some change, and the black ones are marked $9. "But they're the same," she says, "So they should be the same price." He scans them both, and as the tags indicate, there is a $3 price difference. I don't know why she brought 2 black dresses and 1 navy one, but after making him scan all 3 twice each, she decides she's going with the black one. He rings it up. It's her only purchase. He totals it and she gets out her wallet.

Just before swiping her card, she changes her mind. CHANGES IT. Has the poor cashier cancel out the black dress and ring up the navy one. SIX DOLLARS. She swipes her card, and finally, FINALLY, she's done. I buy my five items in two minutes and as I leave the store, I can see her standing at the customer service counter with the navy dress and the black one she didn't buy, arguing with the customer service lady about the price.

Times is hard for people, but seriously -- who do you have to be to need a cocktail dress that costs not a cent more than $7 with tax? And if $3 is going to break you, shouldn't you be less picky about it?

Sheesh.

In situations like that, I just try to focus on the fact that I am totally going to make the cashier smile by how simple my order is.

I try to flip the perception and use this is as a situation where I can feel awesome about myself for not being one of those people.

Especially in Starbucks in Los Angeles, you know, where I swear to God some people go to those places and make purposefully overly-complicated orders just so that they can feel rich and better about themselves and as though they have a servant. There are definitely people making okay money but not the mondy they thought they were gonna be making, floating around this town going into coffee shops and buying complicated coffees just to raise their self-esteem.

And then I'm all like "large coffee. room for milk?"

And I feel SO awesome about myself.

sorry for responding to the start of this thread which is from back in '08, but I do have a thought on it.  Sorry also if this has been covered already as I haven't read the entire thread.

I work in a huge factory that covers a few square miles.  There's this strip of private road that runs through it, complete with stop lights and stop signs.  I often just blow through the stop lights and signs because hey, I'm on private property.  The cops have limited jurisdiction on private property, right?  Or am I wrong?  I've never tested this theory in as much as I've never been pulled over.

Supposedly the factory has an "agreement" with the local cops for them to patrol the area.  Is there some legal concept whereby a private property owner could authorize a cop to give you a speeding ticket or whatever while you're driving on his or her property?

I know that cops can write tickets for parking in handicapped spaces on private property, but this is because state law specifically authorizes this.  However, if you have a traffic accident in a private parking lot, the cop isn't going to write someone a ticket for failure to yield or similar, because it's private property.  This creates difficulties for determining who is liable, because without a finding of fault by the police it's much easier for the insurance company of the responsible party to argue that it has only partial liability.

any one know anything about these concepts?

There's this guy I don't like.  I think I'll invite him over to my house, then murder him.  It won't be illegal 'cause it happened on private property!

Jeezum crow, Ash. Cut the kid some slack; it's a twelve page thread. *I* haven't read the whole thing, for pete's sake.

Linear -- incidentally, you're going to need a nickname, because your name scans too much like "linnea" -- I know that the university in my town is technically private property, but a local cop is still gonna give you a ticket if you're speeding on campus. In fact, I don't think the campus police write speeding tickets as a general rule. They're mainly on bikes and mostly take care of parking and public safety issues.

oh come on!

half the stuff in this thread is unrelated to the other half.

Why stop with this thread!  Why not demand that I read the entire message board before I post!

anyway I was just pointing out that some traffic laws don't apply on private property.

This document seems to support this concept:

http://portal.countyofventura.org/portal/page/portal/PUBLIC_WORKS/transportation/citizen_brochures/documents/Speed%20Limit%20Enforcement%20on%20Private%20Roads_0.pdf (http://portal.countyofventura.org/portal/page/portal/PUBLIC_WORKS/transportation/citizen_brochures/documents/Speed%20Limit%20Enforcement%20on%20Private%20Roads_0.pdf)

unfortunately, this document indicates that at least in California, private property owners in unincorporated areas can effectively authorize law enforcement to regulate speed on their private property.

moreover, it occurs to me that laws which are peculiar to a town, city, etc, might well allow for police enforcement of speed limits on private property.

this country sucks.

Dear Asswipe Client,

Stop IMing me to ask if you can call me at home, I have shit to do that is incompatible with listening to you take fifteen minutes to explain to me that you need a description for the product that you're going to email me a link to. Just send the email with the link in the first place, I check my email more reliably than I answer my phone anyway.

Also, if you want me to include seven specific keywords/phrases in the title, you might also want to let me know that you have a hard limit of 88 characters *before* the third revision, otherwise I will keep sending you stuff that is too long. Especially since the bizarre keywords you gave me add up to more than the word limit BEFORE the addition of conjunctions, punctuation, or words that describe what the actual product is used for.

In other words, dickhead, email me your requirements before I start writing, or I'm going to start charging you every time I have to do something over because you weren't up-front about simple but important shit like character count.

Sincerely,
