'Beefy' - yep, that sounds like Ray.
I don't like this maakies crap when it's its own comic strip, and moving it to achewoodworld hasn't helped. Bleh.
On the plus side, the car looks good and the drawing makes it look like it's really driving along there at a fast speed.
-
Original Maakies strips are available once again, at $450 each, which includes shipping.
this was pretty funny

This strip is everything achewood is not.
-
That was... interesting.
-
People I like (Onstad, They Might Be Giants) like Maakies but I just can't really get into him.
-
Tony Millionaire did a book signing with Onstad recently in Seattle. A friend of mine (a Tony Millionaire fan) was there and actually gave Millionaire a set of beer goggles (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vwguy/3957895208/). He said There were lots more folks there to see Onstad than Millionaire.
This comic is a good example why.
-
Agreed. Didn't enjoy.
-
That strip was Bullshit.
It was neither Interesting, nor Fun, nor filled to the Brim with Good Times™.
-
Whoa
I was non-positive about this strip over on paywood, and some non-Onstad person (presumably staff or unofficial moderator) informed me I was banned for 24 hours.
I tried to reply to them saying 'what do you mean, a 24 hour ban, and by the way who the hell are you?' and found I couldn't (because I was banned, duh!).
What a load of absolute cuntery. Unfuck*ngbelievable. Refund please. <futile complaining continues, diminishing in volume until inaudible>
-
ugh.

that would never happen on freewood.
-
Well, I found it vaguely amusing for a Monday morning.
-
that would never happen on freewood.
It has pissed me off to an extent that would probably be hard for others to understand.

I'm bipolar, until I got medicated I would quite easily fly into obsessive rages over things big and small, so perhaps I understand?
As far as Onstad/Achewood's interaction with the fans, it's too bad that this interaction is trapped inside the limitations of assetbar. Both Onstad and the fans deserve better.
-
what the fuck is a maakies
this isn't a troll or anything, i just have never heard of this before here
same with 'lileks' (again, not trying to joke, i'm serious)
where is all this crap webcomic material coming from? (well, "the internet," but i mean: how is this spreading)
and i thought i was edgy for liking Milk and Cheese back in the day

well, i mean that is a response one can give (the wikipedia page), but the bottom line is: why haven't i heard of these comics before? it's not like i live under a rock or have never read a webcomic.
i give up and will read garfield only

It looks like this happens automatically if you are "jeered" enough?
Interesting. Automated community standards.

It is not a webcomic originally, which is why I supplied the link. Maybe that is why, Bobby. I can't explain your workings of your sphere of influences. Onstad has mentioned this guy before.
The comic/characters are vaguely familiar to me, but I'm not sure why.
-
It looks like this happens automatically if you are "jeered" enough?
Agh, thankyou for that theory/explanation - that explains things. Somewhat harsh. I doubt most users know what they're causing to happen when they hand out that third 'jeer'.
-
I like Maakies, I haven't read much of it since the rise of the webcomic.
Sometime in early 2006 I made a drinkycrow in Illustrator. That shit is VECTOR.
-
I first heard of it when TMBG sold Drinky Crow shot glasses in their online store. I think it was some sort of tie-in as I feel like Tony Millionaire did the cover art for Then: The Earlier Years.
There is also the (short-lived?) Drinky Crow show on Adult Swim.
-
The AS cartoon was... a lot better than this, to be fair.

it would be nice if it was more of a scheme of standards and less of a mine field of capricious whims...
-
Drinky Crow was on Saturday Night Live even.
-
Those of you who do not like Maakies have deeply incorrect taste.
-

The standards are encapsulated well by social norms and the niceties of human interaction, aka "manners."
Just because you don't understand the paradigm doesn't mean there isn't one.

"paradigm" is a pretty fancy word for what amounts to mob mentality
-
"paradigm" is a pretty fancy word for what amounts to mob mentality
I dont think that mob mentality is always a bad thing. As a species it has behooved us to maintain a certain level of conformity, otherwise the population would disperse or react differently to threats and not remain cohesive enough to survive. And, as contrarians got weeded out of the population, the tendency toward conformity increased.
Our individualist lifestyle is a luxury that is the result of the fruits of our modern day civilization. This civilization allows us the privilege of being unique and special snowflakes and is the cumulative result of almost two million years of evolution pushing us toward more conformity. It is a bold experiment and I applaud it, but I am given pause when I see the civilizations with the greatest longevity and continous operation (China, for example) having an emphasis on subsumption of the self to the group. I further see how individualists tend to regress toward the mean of mob mentality on sites like /b/.
It may very well be that the urge to conform is ingrained too deeply to be done away with, and while it can be harmful taken to the extreme, so can extreme individualism -- also known as sociopathy.
Personally, I think a happy medium between the mobs torching the castle and Patrick Bateman on a sex-fueled killing spree is following a golden rule of acting as you wish to be treated and doing what your parents always told you were basic rules of politeness. The rest is culture-specific aftermarket garbage and is usually fueled by some sort of ideology or religion without an empirical basis for its claims. But the Golden Rule and not being a dick to strangers: I think that's more or less universal.
-
I sure wish I could give you a can.
This again.

I....I just can't believe the nearly unanimous hatred for the work of Tony Millionaire here. Before I logged in just now I can't remember ever talking to someone who didn't at least respect his art. And here are (almost) all of you just totally writing the guy off. He is an extremely talented and hilarious man.
I'm sorry, this just blows my mind.

I quite like Tony Millionaire, but on his best day he's no Chris Onstad and this comic a long way from his best.

Your use of the word "mob mentality" assumes that it wasn't provoked.
-

OK. I'll grant you that this isn't his absolute best work. That's true. But when you say he's no Onstad I have to assume that you're referring to his writing and not his art. Onstad is ultimately funnier (I mean, the styles of humor are different, but Chris makes me actually laugh a lot more often), but Millionaire's art (especially for Sock Monkey) is just head and shoulders above. I love Onstad's art, but Millionaire is a master in that regard.
Reading through these comments again I realize that most people are probably judging him solely by this guest appearance. Going outside of myself I can see why this wouldn't be the best introduction to the man's work. I've been reading Maakies and Sock Monkey for years, so it has that familiarity for me. I know the subtleties in his style of humor. I would suggest that people not jump to conclusions. That's all. I just have to believe that given adequate exposure to both products, the Venn diagram for Achewood and Maakies fans would have a hell of a lot of overlap.
-
This Millionaire guest strip is like when Flipper started playing reeeeeeaaaaally slow and all the punks got pissed that their expectations weren't being met.

I have never heard of him before now, but it seems a bunch of LOL BOOZE AND JOKES ABOUT BOOZE AND REFERENCES TO BOOZE LOL BOOZE ROCKS BOOZE BOOZE BOOZE to me. Hell, even Wikipedia has it under Category: Drinking Culture.
-
Don't be silly! Looking at the archive, the last several were garbage related, also: Fart Joke!
-

It's more like having a hot substitute teacher who does things differently and gets all the prissy girls's panties in a bunch but the relaxed dudes appreciate her.

So, Milk and Cheese, except without MERV GRIFFIN.

Wow, a real Onstad devotee here.
Somebody's been drinking the kool-aid.
Hah, hah, I crack me up.

I got nothing against Tony Millionaire but this wasn't a very enjoyable or funny strip to read.

maakies is aids (so is pbf).

While we are at it, I didn't find "Phillipe is standing on it." funny in any way, shape or form.

Yeah, I probably wouldn't enjoy PISOT on its own. I did enjoy reading it as part of the archive, though. Obviously I can't say how I'll feel about this one in the future but I don't see it becoming something I enjoy or really feel strongly about.
-
maakies is aids (so is pbf).
Them's fighting words.
-
I quite like a lot of Millionaire's stuff, actually.
Just not... this strip. I think his style might not interact with the Ache-characters (Acharacters?) well.
-
i love tony millionaire's art, but i don't find him funny in the least. i'd say a good third of achewood isn't funny, but it's almost always interesting. this guest strip wasn't interesting, it was merely novel. a novelty.
in imagining a maakies by onstad, i can't think it would be terribly funny, but i can guarantee i'd find it at least interesting.
-
I can see how this strip evolved from the idea of "vodka telescope" vs. "beer goggles" but from there the joke that you and I would laugh about with our friends for 1.5 seconds became a comic strip.
-
I think I like language jokes better than dense visual jokes. When I said this is everything that achewood is not I meant that, for me at least, achewood at it's best is very restrained, Onstad will sacrifice clarity for the sake of not overemphasising a funny situation and that'w hy he's great. Reading this strip I feel like everything is exaggerated, I feel assaulted and that's why I don't like it.
Also I don't think Ray or Beef seem like Ray or Beef in this strip and so it makes me confused and sad.
But that's just, like, my opinon man. Also it's a guest strip, it's not like I'm not going to be here tomorrow (this is a daily comic right?) because of it.
-
Wow, a real Onstad devotee here.
Somebody's been drinking the kool-aid.
Hah, hah, I crack me up.
whoa. i didnt realize how fan-girl-ish that seems...
-
you know i have to say this: i guess when you do a comic strip and tony millionaire draws you a guest strip you run it. he's kind of an institution in the real world of "alternative comics" and not running this strip would have been chris being a cock to a (relative) stranger. and you don't want publishers to think you're a cock to one of their few remaining dudes bringing in money.
-
Guest strips used to be a hallmark of webcomics. I feel like they have fallen by the wayside, and I'm sad to see that. I feel like Onstad could probably pull some insane talent to do up some guest strips for him, these days.
I didn't really find the Maakies guest strip that great in this case, but I did appreciate the variety/effort/depravity.
-
Yea... Millionaire is no Guisewite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathy_Guisewite).

evolution in complex systems is not this simple. For example the concept of increasing returns dictates that often getting your foot in the door first in a complex environment is more important than being best. Take keyboards - One of the most successful keyboard layouts to have evolved is QWERT, and it was designed to be as slow and inefficient as possible to type on because the keys on early typewriters would jam up if people typed too fast.
I don't think that your argument for how mob mentality could have been an evolutionarily advantageous trait is valid, but, I don't have any argument to present that it isn't or that the opposite is true. Maybe mob mentality is something which is encoded in the genome, hardcoded in the hardware of the brain, or maybe it evolved in human culture, aka the wetware. Or maybe both. Certainly, culture can trump biological traits, in the sense that we may have evolved such that fast food and zero exercise will kill us, yet our culture pushes us towards this lifestyle. Maybe we are genetically averse to mob mentality, but it's our culture that pushes us towards it. All possibilities I think.
obviously mob mentality will continue to bestow evolutionary advantages to many individuals in many cultures for decades if not centuries to come - places like North Korea for example... Consider also that of all 1st world countries, I think it can be said that conformism is disproportionately high in the U.S. It's too simple I think to say that wealth promotes individualism, because hey, the U.S. has hella poverty for bein' a 1st world country. Perhaps even conformism and individualism, when carried to the point of psychosis, are two sides of the same psychosis.
There is a myth of individualism in the U.S., and the U.S. subscribes to this myth. While the U.S. does have a tradition of individualism, and while this tradition did originate in rebelling against conformism imposed by Great Britain, for the following two centuries this tradition of individualism has prospered as a contrast and in response to overwhelming forces of conformism which are domestic in nature and which at present rival, at the very least, in effect and in scope, if not in method, the forces of conformism of Great Britain some two centuries previously.
In the complex environment of culture, advanced such as it has these past few years, I'd say that maybe the only absolute that might be true might be the idea that any absolute is going to be worse than none. And I think that this includes mob mentality.
If I were president, I'd be pushing that fuckin' red button in the briefcase. screw you guys, we're gonna TILT this bitch. We're starting from scratch.

While I wouldn't want you pushing the red button just yet, you have given me a lot to chew on. I do think the Americans idolize a rugged individualism that is independent of wealth and has more to do with the fact that the pioneers were people who did not fit in elsewhere. In general, though, individualism is seen in newer (American) OR richer (European) cultures, and seems to be fading due to ... something. Reality TV? Advertising? Lack of effort relating to reward? Lead in the water? Who knows. I posited a general regression toward the mean (see also /b/) but it could very well be caused by another X factor that, with our limited time and resources, we may never know.
-
I like the ones where the stuffed animal shows his c*ck.
-
I dig the art. It's very Krazy Kat in its density and vibrance. It's only fault is that it wasn't an Achewood comic, which I think is what most people are reacting to.
The characters just don't act like the characters we've gotten to know over the past few years. While "vodka colonic" is a quality punch line on its own, the comic appears to be one long setup for it, whereas Achewood's plots tend more to follow an internal consistency that serves the characters rather than the joke.
Also Uncle Gabby's ass would be more in danger of personal contact with cake than with vodka if Ray's drunken lust sent him that direction.
Am I overthinking this? I've had a lot of Halloween candy today.
-
While we are at it, I didn't find "Phillipe is standing on it." funny in any way, shape or form.
I found that funny as fuck. Opinions are like the back genital. Which is not a genital at all.
(Maybe a strip about a cute and dumb animal standing on an instruction manual is funnier for cat owners?)
-
Ray said, "We are going to make it stink!!!" All in all, good comic.
-
I....I just can't believe the nearly unanimous hatred for the work of Tony Millionaire here.
And I really can't understand why people like the work of Tony Millionaire. Sure, he can come up with a reasonable approximation of that 60's esque freaky freakout Crumboid cartoon style, with a smidgeon of Steam Boat Willy. But the actual content of his cartoons is juvenile, uninspired, unfunny drivel. I scanned through maakies to check and it's mostly lame not-funny-at-all jokes, often trading on the inherent hilariousness* of puke, shite, and drinking lots of alcohol.
The guest strip is not in the slightest bit funny and doesnt evoke the achewood characters, although as I said the car looks nice.
In summary, it's not enough for me that his cartoon is nicely drawn.
*NB: these things are not inherently hilarious.
(hey, I got ever-so-slightly OTT here didn't I? Sorry for being so serious.)
-
All of the above. Fuck this zero-effort shit. Go work as a character designer for t-shirts, Tony Millionaire, leave narratives alone.
-
This Tony Millionaire guy sure is good at getting a messageboard thread riled up.
-

also, i feel like I have seen this strip before.
like, has he previously done a Maakies or something based on the idea of Beer Goggles being actual goggles with beers on them.
-
like, has he previously done a Maakies or something based on the idea of Beer Goggles being actual goggles with beers on them.
He's done many strips where "beer goggles being actual goggles with beers on them" is the main joke.
-
As someone who was into Tony Millionaire long before Achewood existed, it's pretty fancy to see them both land in one place.
Honestly though, the artwork looks like Millionaire drew the whole thing in a hastey and/or drunken state compaired to much of the other stuff he does.
For those who don't know Maakies - in their hey day, there were even some shorts on SNL and a brief show that got cancelled (I think).
Also: Onstand and Millionaire pt 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwX4modzp2A) and pt 2. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJh5VJ6wrDY)
-
I went back and looked through the strips on maakies.com, and now I hate this Millionaire blighter much less. But I still dont like this guest strip.
-
I went back and looked through the strips on maakies.com, and now I hate this Millionaire blighter much less. But I still dont like this guest strip.
That's all I wanted anyone to understand. He's great and this just doesn't happen to be his absolute best work. I quite like it, but I can see how it may not be the best introduction to his work.
-
One of the best introductions to Tony Millionaire is to go to an alternative comic book store and buy a copy of Sock Monkey. Or a head shop.
-
See there's the thing... I am suspicious of the notion that his work is best appreciated with the aid of other products of the head shop.
-
I think this is pretty appropriate on a few levels (http://www.maakies.com/archive/m763.html).
-
See there's the thing... I am suspicious of the notion that his work is best appreciated with the aid of other products of the head shop.
To me, when it comes to book purchases, head shops serve as a nice ambience without need of any additional products they may support. Plus books you buy there have that incense smell you can't get anywhere else.
I could never read while stoned, so I always found the connection of books at head shops more about alt culture = alt culture = sold in one handy location, rather than, say, liturature at head shop = read while stoned.
I have not played that particular game of golf in a long time, but still, even when I did, it was not affiliated with reading Sock Monkey.
-
I have not played that particular game of golf in a long time
I don't have any golf terminology that involves cans.
-
Drinky Crow likes to drink.
-
Been checking out Tony Millionaires' stuff on the net. Dude's got talent, reminds me of the Firkin cartoons by Hunt Emerson. Nice to have a one-off gag based strip for a change.
-
Quality first post, Troy. Welcome.
-
interesting comparison, but the only way those remind me of each other is in how they both remind me of r. crumb
-
Shit's getting intense. Cool.
-
I don't know why Beef is shouting so much but "vodka colonic" sounds like a pretty good second panel setup line for an Achewood strip.
-
interesting comparison, but the only way those remind me of each other is in how they both remind me of r. crumb
Well ironically, the artists styles are probably influenced by more than just Crumb. Even his style was not unique to him (amazingly), it was influenced by a lot of the Kustom Kar culture of the 60's culture proponents of the time, like Ed Roth, Von Dutch, Robert Williams et al.
-
Von Dutch
I only recognise this as an annoying clothing brand. After reading the man's thoughts on money at the dang top of his wiki page part of me died at the giant beer-shit someone took on the fellow's memory. Maybe it's just coincidence though? Maybe.
Edit: Oops, no, further reading reveals that a beer shit is exactly what someone took.
-
Yes, the irony that the Von Dutch legend has been whored to death by his heirs and the 'brand' #cringes at the word# is now synonymous with shallow dead-list no-talent c*lebrity freaks.
They can't hear me say this of course, they're too busy sucking on Satan's c*ck...
-
A friend of mine has an artcar called Von Dutch Hates You (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmcd9/507358411/). I rode in it for the parade a couple of years ago. When we came around to the announcing stand the lady with the mic said "I hope he doesn't hate me, i looooove his clothes." Big Al shouted back at her "He hates you most of all you stupid bitch."
-
...they're too busy sucking on Satan's c*ck...
Haha now I have to spend the next half-hour watching old Bill Hicks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lv2qLOiioPc) clips on youtube.
That's not dancing that's Satan's semen eating through the lining of his stomach!

The Not Rod, nice. You should get another friend to make a "Ed Hardy Hates You" car and then they could drive around together and make all the sheeple mad.
