I'm kind of sad, and afraid. I had got used to the idea that Achewood was gone forever. What if he hurts again?

Strip was kind of bleh too, but he gets some lee-way because it's practically a blog post excusing his absence.

Shut up.

I loved it. I like it when they break the fourth wall, or whatever wall it is in a comic strip, once in a while, and this seemed like just the correct moment.

Daddy's home, with some half-formed explanations about where he's been, booze on his breath and urine stains on his #####, a sheepish expression in his eyes. We'll see how long he stays this time, but we'll enjoy it while it lasts.

Teodor is looking at his hands in the first panel like... like he was disembodied all this time and now he can see his hands again. But Ray spent the hiatus wandering the streets. I don't know, I guess maybe that makes sense.

I love wombat's theory that when they aren't regularly updating, the Achewood characters are in some tortured barely-even-ethereal floating limbo hell, sort of like the exorcised ghosts in BEETLEJUICE.

I'll go with that.

I was going to wait until about a month out, so it didn't bite me in the face immediately but I just want to say I'm glad we got through this and can put this disasteful episode behind us and go back to remembering Achewood as it was and not as the horrific, lurching zombie of a comic it has become.

I'm sure I've asked this before, but is there a website anywhere on the internet that features webcomic news?  If not, seems like that's a niche that needs to be filled.  I'm not just talking out of my ass if I say that Onstad is one of the top stars in the webcomic game?  Just as I'm sure that his absence surely must be noticed by others besides us, right?  Seems like someone should be reporting on this.

That's a pretty good site.  He's basically just a super fan with good taste writing about the comics he loves.  He's not got any inside information, though.

I found a few interesting things to check out from his site.  I bookmarked him.

I did see this (http://www.fleen.com/archives/2011/02/15/things-that-happened-so-gradually-i-didnt-even-notice/).

Well, Calvin & Hobbes lasted what, 10 years? Roughly the same time that Achewood's been running. It can be, like it's been said here sometimes, that the guy's sick of it.

(Although I wish Achewood had had not only C & H's longevity, but also its output...)

Well yeah.  If Onstad had ever done 7 strips a week for even a little while you might have a point.

I don't know, maybe I'm just being nosy, but I want to know what's up with him.  I want to know why he's not producing.  If he's doing something different creatively, I'm interested to know where he's channeling his talent so I can check that out.  If he's given up cartooning and taken a job at the post office, I want to know that too so I can stop wondering what's happened to him.

Oh, I don't mean like exactly the same output, as long as it enters the "substantial/reliable" area...

I think Onstad's oeuvre stands up perfectly well in the company of Calvin and Hobbes.

Yeah, maybe I am nosy too, but yeah, I also just want to stop wondering. If he is working in a restaurant, that's cool, you know? I'm in no position to begrudge someone a career change. But I feel like I have had enough of a personal connection that at this point I'd just like to know he's OK and getting on with his life without us.

Yeah, what I was trying to say was, even if the output is not the same, that is not how you judge. When we decide who our great writers are we don't count up how many books they wrote, right?

As far as the tweets there is nothing about writing tweets that necessarily takes away from getting other creative work done so I don't think we can blame that. Twitter can actually be a good writing exercise.

Well, at least we know from Twitter that if he can afford to go to Disneyland the family isn't starving because I can't buy another apron. Damn, I really need another apron though.

That's not the question we were debating.  I think it's pretty much agreed that Onstad is a great writer.  In my own personal opinion Achewood is at least equal to Calvin and Hobbes and in many ways it's superior even.

But if he's sick of it, is it fair to compare him to Watterson who produced 7 comics a week for 10 years when Onstad has produced much much less over that same amount of time*.  Or is it merely a function of time? For him to be sick of it even if he's not got nearly as much done in that time.

As far as the tweets there is nothing about writing tweets that necessarily takes away from getting other creative work done so I don't think we can blame that. Twitter can actually be a good writing exercise.

If he's "exercising" on twitter he needs to get his ass out of the gym and back in the game, or however that metaphor works.

Well, at least we know from Twitter that if he can afford to go to Disneyland the family isn't starving because I can't buy another apron. Damn, I really need another apron though.

Yes!  He's obviously making enough money to afford an expensive vacation.  That strongly suggest that he's gotten himself a job.  Come to think of it, that's probably why he moved to Portland so he could accept a job offer.

I also believe he has a second unreported child.  He's leaving notes (http://twitpic.com/44ydei) for the delivery man.  Do you still worry about "waking the baby" when they are what, 6-7 years old?

*Who's our stats guy, Ash?  What's the weekly average for Achewood over the entire course of it's run?  Total number of strips divided by weeks it's been published?

That seems kind of uncool to just delete all those lame comments without warning.

IIRC, BabyStad is just a hair younger than my son, which would make her just about to turn 6.

I think there's another kid, too. I seem to recall something a while back where he said "buy stuff to feed our growing family."

Either way, though, I mean, seriously. Do, or do not, fer reals.

For fuck's sake, it should be evident that me bringing up C & H in the first place should be an indication that I think they're equally great comic strips. For fuck's sake. The part about "if only Achewood had the same output..." takes place in la la land, a land of imagination where there's rainbows for breakfast and Optimus Prime plays the bass in your band. I was merely wishing out loud. I'll put away the chess board again, don't worry...

Apparently The Lancet (http://www.thelancet.com/) is an online medical journal.  The only thing Google can tell me about  Space Oreo (http://www.urbandictionary.com/author.php?author=Space+oreo) is he/she is an author on Urban Dictionary.  Kombucha boarding sounds made up, but Kombucha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kombucha) is a real thing.

I'm a somewhat adventurous eater, I mean I wouldn't win any contests or anything, but I'm game for most things people put in front of me, but:

Quote
Kombucha is available commercially and can be made at home by fermenting tea using a visible, solid mass of yeast and bacteria which forms the kombucha culture which is often referred to as the "mushroom" or the "mother".

What the fuck? That's like the most terrible thing I could dream up to ingest not involving shit or mucus or some gross animal part. From that description I'd rather drink piss.

Buddy from high school who bounced around all over the place before falling in love with the place and getting his masters in social work there.

I've visited, though. I'd live there if there was any meaningful work for myself and my girlfriend.

Great arthouse cinema, great bookstores. Truly solid fuckin' college town with nice Mexican and Native America touches around the edges.

Sorry to threadjack this thread back to original topic, but:

Seeing this "we're back" strip kind of offends me.  It really offends me.  I spent months of my life checking achewood first thing when waking up and last thing before going to sleep.  Spent hours at a time browsing the archives.  But now I click the random comic button once and then I no longer want to read.

I don't know if I even find it funny anymore.  The characters used to really be alive.  They would breathe and communicate with you, but now, who are they?  I was fully immersed and absorbed in the world and then it disintegrated.  It feels like I've been broken up with.  I was completely in love, and now she ignores my calls.

I don't think it's possible to get back to that place.  The characters have been dead for too long, I don't check the site that often, I haven't posted here or even lurked in months.  I don't even like webcomics anymore.  Just the Drew and Natalie comics, maybe cat and girl once in the blue, all the rest of them can fuck off and die.

I've honestly been hurt, and don't believe it.  I hope this shitty comic doesn't even come back.

Fuck.

Used to be the AAA team. The Toros are an independent league team that took over the name when the affliated team moved out.

Went to a game there this summer. Bought a shirt and everything. It is in my "cool shirts" rotation:

My Pee-Wee Herman stage show shirt, my Tucson Toros shirt, my Utica Club brewery shirt, my Circus Liquor "booze clown" shirt, my "glow in the dark skeleton playing a guitar" shirt and... the newest addition... the reproduction of the Japanese baseball shirt Jeff Bridges wore in giraffeER KING and LEBOWSKI that my girlfriend got me for Valentines.

I thought about that after I posted. Not vinegar specifically, but that it's a similar process used to make other things I don't find offensive. I think it was mostly the combination of the photo, name and description. Kombucha, I'm sorry. Maybe I'll give you a shot someday.

I love Tucson. Might be my favorite western city outside of the pacific northwest. I've lived there and a couple other places in the southwest. My best friend from college lives there now, and I'll be visiting him for the third time in a year the end of this month.

Hate Phoenix, though.

Could it just be that he lost interest in the material and wants to see how little he has to generate on the free site while keeping the pay-wall money coming in for scans of sketchbooks?

Like a campfire where you're no longer bothered to get more wood but want to see how long you can stay warm off the embers without much added effort?

Doesn't wanna be bothered with running the merch or paying someone to run the merch but kind of cynically wants to see how long he can stretch out the end of it as a cushion toward transitioning back into a "normal" job?

Maybe the wife got sick of it, got sick of putting in the work for something that was only his and without her full support, it wasn't enough of a profit margin for the headaches?

From remarks he has dropped here and there online it sounds more like he has a case of writer's block that he is not at all happy about, not that he is doing this deliberately as a scam.

Well of course he's not going to let on.  He must keep up appearances.  :D

If he has writers block it could be because the life of his talking cats and alive stuffed animals doesn't match up with his own life very well anymore.  Most of his characters are single and, if not loving it, at least preferring it.  None of them have children.

If he would just let Ray get married and have kids the juices would start flowing again.

Baby Blues... with cats.

I mean, even if he could probably do a funnier version of Baby Blues with cats than most would, it would be a great shame in terms of the misapplication of talents.

Listen to the guys who ain't married or breeding talk about someone who has and how it makes them suck.

So thinking that in general family humor sucks means that I think that families suck?  Wow, that's one hell of a leap.

Too many years of lowest common denominator media has made 'family humuor must sux' some kind of trope.

I'm glad that you realize this.

I forgive them though.

You should be apologizing.

And yet you won't realize that perhaps it could be done well. If not, explain to me why Onstad or another creator couldn't do right.

there's a lot of comic potential there.

I mean c'mon, you went along with sMets tying Achewood to Baby Blues.

Not really.  I was mostly just goading sMets.

But even if I did, that doesn't mean I think guys with wives and kids suck.  You really need to take that back.

All in all, upon finishing my reading, I imagined a little boy who stepped out from a screen of Zorro to witness his parents gunned down in an alleyway by Ronald MacDonald.

"Did you ever," the clown might have asked the boy, "dance with the devil in food folks and fun?"

man, that Atlantic article is so dumb.
"the real arts"
"if culinary perfection is achieved, the meal becomes downright holy" is a major misreading of that section of the Omnivore's Dilemma.
"Is any other subculture reported on so exclusively by its own members? Or with a frequency and an extensiveness that bear so little relation to its size?" music? art?

also of course it turns into dumb-ass vegetarian moralizing.
