Inspired by this post by JL (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,3806.msg172767.html#msg172767) I thought, why not start a thread about things that it strike some as unusual to know we've never done. You know - things that are fairly common parts of the human experience in North America that you've managed to accidentally or intentionally avoid.
I've never ridden a hoss.
...seen the original Star Wars trilogy.
...had a roommate.
...eaten Peking Duck.
...ridden on a train.
...drank scotch.
-
Do we have to drink if we've done the things mentioned?
I never...
...saw The Sound of Music
...lived on campus at college
...attended a frat party
...climbed a tree
-
You have never ridden on a train of any kind? Not a subway either?
Till I was in my 30s I could say I had never driven a car, which people found totally bizarre and unAmerican. Apparently it is really Not Done to be an adult in this country and not know how to drive. Now that I have learned to drive, I feel like nothing I could list in a thread like this could ever live up to that.
-

Hmm... I've done all of those things, I'll have to think about this.
Actually, I just rewatched the Original Star Wars trilogy. In fact, I saw Return of the Jedi just last night.
Do we have to drink if we've done the things mentioned?
I never...

I never lived on campus at college either. Common ground.
Although, I'm not sure how common that is. It's really a small percentage of people who even go to college at all and an even smaller number who live on campus.
But I have done all the rest of that stuff. One time I climbed a tree and then jumped out of the tree and broke my foot.
Also, you should see The Sound of Music. It's a really good film. Watch it with the kids. I'm especially fond of this number (http://youtu.be/vQe3W3eYPvk). There's something about that melody that really gets me.
Till I was in my 30s I could say I had never driven a car, which people found totally bizarre and unAmerican.
that is pretty odd, but I guess not so much if you live in NYC.
-
On the other hand, I had never been on an airplane until the week before my wedding (I was 22). I had been on a subway, but never a real train until I was about 25.
I have also never been outside North America, and have only been outside of the US once. My family visited the Canadian side of Niagara Falls when I was small; you didn't even need a passport then. Actually, that's another thing I've never done -- had a passport. And I've never been west of the Mississippi river.
Pedro was 30 years old before he ever visited Disney World.
I have never been the the circus.
-
Hey, I have never been east of the mississippi river (i have been to every state west, except the Dakotas and Oregon and Washington) and I have only been outside of the country for a few hours when my family went to Tijuana when I was about 12, you didn't even need a passport then. I have never had a passport either!

Oh damn, plus I have never been on a train, but have been on a subway and haven't been on an airplane since I was about 8.
-
Keith and I are all up in each other's negative space!
-
that is pretty odd, but I guess not so much if you live in NYC.
That is absolutely correct. There are ways in which NYC is not exactly part of America, and that's one of them.
-
Maybe it speaks to me being from Alaska, but I'm a bit surprised that "I've never climbed a tree" just floats off into the ether. I can't imagine anyone ambulatory never having climbed a tree.
I've never lived in on-campus housing or gone to a frat party. I don't think I've ever been inside a frat. This isn't dirtiest dudes or anything, but I've never been anybody's first time (as far as I know).
Man, I don't think I'm that interesting but I am having a hard time coming up with things here, and I think this is a hella interesting topic.
-
I've never ridden a hoss. I did this but did not enjoy it
...seen the original Star Wars trilogy. WAT
...had a roommate. I've always been lucky with mine. We're all going our separate ways soon and I want to cry
...eaten Peking Duck. It's nomolicious
...ridden on a train. Trains are my favourite mode of transport. Except when I am sat next to a drunk person
...drank scotch. Scotch is the King of Alcohol
...saw The Sound of Music It's good
...lived on campus at college We don't have 'campuses' mostly but I've done our equivalent (uni halls)
...attended a frat party Done UK equivalent I think
...climbed a tree Do it tomorrow. Your body is the greatest instrument you will ever own. And it likes to climb
> Karaoke, I haven't done this and I'm a ham with a decent voice. Do it. Seeing good people at karaoke is joyful. I have done it but I have a terrible voice
> Climbed a really big friggin' mountain to see what's there. I've climbed a bunch of normal ones, but nothing with cachet. How big is really big? I have conquered a few, most of the UK mountains are relatively small but the Alps/Pyrenees have given me some tough times. Or should that be tough CLIMBS lolol
> Tapdanced on the restaurant table while singing this song to Spouse. I have not done this. I lose
> Africa - Safari. 'Nuff said. I lose again
> Read David Copperfield or a whole binders worth of other 'classics'. Life's too short to get 'em all, I s'pose. David Copperfield is good, but you have rightly discarded it in favour of better things
> Painted a picture after Kindergarten. The whole brush/paint/paper thing confounds me. Now with crayons, on the other hand... I did one good painting past the age of 14, and that was my life's artistic talent all used up
> I've not eaten a Slim Jim yet. What's a slim jim
I now need to do those 3 things. Tapdance, Africa, Slim Jim
I will think of some for myself but not now
-
Ash, I'm stunned that you or anybody hasn't been to Africa. Seriously, why are you wasting time fuck*ng around here.
-
I've never:
seen 12 Angry Men (although I have it on my DVR). Is that one? It's the highest rated film in IMDB that I haven't seen.
played an organized sport, not really. I went out for wrestling but never competed, and I was on the swim team in Jr. High.
killed anything bigger than a bug other than a few halibut.
been arrested.
finished a game of chess (I don't think, anyway).
This is kind of hard.
-
I never lived on campus either - but that wasn't an option, my university didn't have on campus housing at the time. I also never went to a frat party, but neither of the universities had frats at the time either.
I have ridden on the subway in Toronto, which I loved, but not on an actual, factual train.
I have never been to Disney. That was something that really made me feel like an outsider at the private school I went to. I was there on a low income scholarship, all my classmates were well to do and going to Disney was a pretty regular thing for them. Now I'm anti Disney and hope I never have to go there. I think it would be like a personal hell.
I didn't know what a Slim Jim was, but I have eaten a Hot Rod (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_rod_%28meat_snack%29) so I'm thinking I'm okay there.
Most of Ash's other thing seem pretty uncommon to me. I am pretty proud of the no roommate thing. It was the one thing that came from my mom's mental illness that turned out well for me. I applied for funding from this organization indicating I was unable to live at home and successfully attend university, and they interviewed me about it, I was honest about my situation and they covered my room and board for three school years.
I've never seen 12 Angry Men (not interested)
I've never killed anything bigger than a goldgiraffe. I'd like to though.
I've never been arrested, but that's just luck.
I've never had sex with anyone but my husband, and he's never had sex with anyone but me. That's pretty damn rare these days.
I've never met 11 of my aunts and uncles.
I've never had a biologically related member of my family die of natural causes in my life time.
I've never owned a kitten or puppy (only adult adopted pets)
I've never gotten a tattoo - seems to be the norm with my peers to have one.
-
I crossed one off the list today -- ate tofu. It was good. Also, I had curry at a restaurant. I have only previously eaten curry prepared from a recipe at home, so I was able to wimp out on the amount of spice. So I guess I can cross off two things -- tofu and real curry.
I have had Indian food one other time in my life, but I basically just asked the waiter to bring me the mildest chicken dish on the menu, and I don't even remember what it was. Today I feel like I had real Indian food for the first time, it was enjoyable.
Also, as we discussed, I had sushi for the first time a few weeks ago (and for the second time soon after, holy cow was it good). There are lots of foods I've never tried, but I'm working through them.
Other things I have never done:
...learned to drive a manual transmission (though this doesn't compare to never having learned to drive)
...slept with anyone I wasn't married to (technically)
...kissed a boy (or girl) with braces
...gotten in a fist fight
...kept a pet (my mother had a toy poodle when I was young, but we got rid of it when I was about 8)
Oooh, yes, I've never played an organized sport, either. I competed on a few academic teams, though. And I have also never been arrested.
I have never successfully played poker. I can't keep all the houses or whatever straight in my head, and besides which, I'm a terrible liar.
Dangit, I keep having to add to this because of simulposting. Smells, Pedro was anti-Disney until he went. If you have a chance to go someday, go and laugh and have fun. It really is wonderful, don't confuse the place with the people.
I also don't have any tattoos or piercings other than my earlobes.
-
I have never been to Disney.
. . .
I've never killed anything bigger than a goldgiraffe. I'd like to though.
I have this sort of amusement park based on The Most Dangerous Game, and I could help you "kill" two birds with one stone, if you'd like.
-
hm.
I have never played a song all the way through on my guitar on my own. (IE, without a teacher sitting there making me, or a friend playing along)
I have never touched a gun.
I have never caught a giraffe.
I have never lived alone.
I think until recently I had never eaten a mushroom. Maybe I did when I was a baby?
I have never been to Asia, Africa, Australia, or Antarctica.
-
This is hard. I've done pretty much everything you guys have listed except get arrested. I've been in a bunch of jails and prisons tho...
Haven't been anywhere but the US, Tijuana and Europe.
Haven't had any affairs. Never had a one night stand, or really any sort of casual sex.
Lots of movies I haven't seen, especially from the last decade or so. I'm such a fuck*ng old fogey.
Never taken heroin or crack.
Only lived alone for a couple of months. Hated it.
-
I have never caught a giraffe.
It's hard to, because they can see you coming from up there.
-
I, too, have never taken heroin. Lots of opiates, but never the big one. But really, I don't think that's in keeping with the general idea here - unless you think taking heroin and crack are the norm, rather than the exception. I guess maybe I started that with the arrested thing - so I have no one to blame but myself.
-
I've been to Arizona, but not the Grand Canyon.
I've been to Nevada, but not the Hoover Dam.
I've been to NYC, but not the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building.
I lived in Alaska but did not go to Mt. McKinley (or Denali now, I guess).
I've been to VA, FL, and TX but never anywhere in the actual South (or what I think of as the South).
-
Never lived on campus.
Never taken any illicit drugs beyond weed and LSD.
Never been arrested.
Never taken a girl home from a bar or club. Or a guy for that matter.
Never been sky diving, rock-climbing, or scuba-diving (which, when you live on the great barrier reef is pretty unacceptable).
Never been to Africa, Europe, the Middle East or South America.
-
I have never touched a gun, which is kind of weird cause I grew up on about 60 acres in Oklahoma.
I have been "arrested" twice, but never actually been to jail.
I have done heroin! but I have never smoked crack. I think I have done meth, but it was supposed to be e, so it doesn't count? I would kind of like to smoke crack, at least once.
I haven't seen tons of movies, though I have been catching up in the last few years. Still never seen: Godfather (any), actually this list is hard to make, but, basically, if there is an "important" movie and it isn't made by the Coen Bros or some random french dude, I probably haven't seen it.
I don't have any tattoos. I kind of hate them and kind of know the exact tattoo I want, so it's possible I will have one within the year.
And I know we have been over this, so sorry, but I have literally never experienced adult/late adolescents not high. I mean, sure, for a few hours, but I have been high everyday except like 10 for the last 10 and a half years.
-
weirdly, I guess I have had a one-night stand. Depending on your definition. There was no penetration, but sexy things occurred ending in orgasms.
...wait, have I had two one night stands? I guess so. If non-penetrative sex acts count.
-
I'm feeling really accomplished right now because I've done most of the stuff listed here.
I've never taken heroin or smoked crack. I don't think shooting heroin or smoking crack is really a normal thing though.
I've never been sky diving or scuba diving. You can add snow skiing to that as well. But are any of those really the norm?
I don't have a tattoo, but that didn't really become the norm until after I was an adult. Don't want one either.
I've never been to Disney, but never wanted to until just recently. I saw a friends pictures and it looks like a blast. At least it's visually stunning.
I can think of a lot of stuff that I haven't done, but nothing that would seem weird that I hadn't ever done.
It's an interesting question.
-
I've never been married. I guess that's pretty out of the ordinary.
-
Sky diving and scuba diving was me trying to think of things I want to do that I've never done. Although having *never* gone scuba diving probably is reasonably unusual around here. Like having never gone skiing if you live in a snowier sort of climate.
-
I've never been married. I guess that's pretty out of the ordinary. (http://I've never been married. I guess that's pretty out of the ordinary.)
Hey, me neither!
I've never met Paul or JL or Golfhaus or Q, which is silly. I have lived near JL and Golfhaus and Q, and I feel like EVERYONE but me has met Paul. What gives?
-
I've only met smick.
He's fuck*ng rad, though.
-
I believe I have one: I've never hit a baseball.
-
I've never met Paul or JL or Golfhaus or Q, which is silly. I have lived near JL and Golfhaus and Q, and I feel like EVERYONE but me has met Paul. What gives?
I've never met Paul.
I've never done any kind of illegal drugs, but I can't imagine that surprises anyone, since that is exactly the sort of person I play on the Internet.
Smells, go to Disneyland in California. Since it is the first and oldest it practically counts as a historic site. I never wanted to go, but my friend who grew up around there convinced me and it was absolutely fun. I don't do a lot of dumb mindless fun things, but I think because they are just incredibly good at what they do (and because thank God the "it's a small world" ride was broken) I had a really good time.

I've been to Disneyworld several times and Disneyland oncet. -Land was a weird experience. We went on our "honeymoon" which was actually about 8 months after we got married. It was in March on a weekday and the place was empty. I remember getting off Space Mountain and just walking right back on without a wait. Weird.
-
I've never been married. I guess that's pretty out of the ordinary. (http://I've never been married. I guess that's pretty out of the ordinary.)
Hey, me neither!
Yes, but you're a pup and you really want to be married and inevitably you almost surely will.
I've never met Paul or JL or Golfhaus or Q, which is silly. I have lived near JL and Golfhaus and Q, and I feel like EVERYONE but me has met Paul. What gives?
I've only met a few people from this board. I'd like to meet you all, but at this point it's more normal to have not met me.
-
they are just incredibly good at what they do
This. I recommend -World, actually, because you have 4 parks to choose from now (Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Epcot, and Hollywood Studios) plus Downtown Disney (which replaced Pleasure Island, the grown-up, after-dark Disney destination, with booze). There's more to do and see, and if you're going that far, you probably want to go to the place with the most to offer and stay for a few more days.
Disclaimer: I have never been to -Land, this is just what I have heard from people who have been to both. But their information may be out of date.
What really made it fun for me, besides having kids and enjoying their enjoyment, was that I got one of the guidebooks that tells you "behind the scenes" stuff and trivia about each park -- stuff like what the names on the shops above Main Street refer to, and what the house numbers around Liberty Square mean. It even talked about the little details in the individual rides -- the tombstones in the Haunted Mansion, for instance -- and it is absolutely amazing how nothing about the park is there by accident.
Everything you see, if you think it has some kind of secret meaning, it probably does. I spent the whole week with my eyes open as wide as possible, trying to notice as many of the "secrets" as possible. It does inspire a sense of childlike wonder and curiosity in that way, which is a rare thing in modern life.
Anyway, back on topic: Pedro has never lived alone either. I really liked living alone, but one of my roommates wasn't too bad because she was a design student, so I was in class all day and she was in the studio all night. I only had to see her on weekends, and we were friends so we hung out and had fun.
I live three hours from a ski resort but I've never been snow skiing. I was going to say I've never killed anything but then I remember that I hit a deer with my car about ten years ago and it definitely did not make it out alive. (Neither did the car.)
I have never had so much to drink that I lost the ability to remember what happened the night before, or passed out.
-
No - I just wont go to Disneyland or world. I just wont. I hate everything about them.
-
So do I. Seriously, nowadays Disney is part of everything that is wrong with American culture, to me. Which is exactly why it was so utterly fascinating that it was enjoyable anyway.
I don't recommend making a special trip there but if you were in the area anyway I would not avoid it. See, this is also the thing about Disneyland - a person might well be in Southern California for other reasons, and if so, one day at Disneyland is worth the effort. Disney World on the other hand - I don't know why anyone would be around there except especially to go there.
-
Ooh, I have another one: I have never broken a bone.
Until I was 30, I could say I'd never had a cavity/filling, but I got two of them within six months of my 30th birthday. None since, though -- knock on wood.
-
I've never had a cavity either! For me it's definitely genetics, because I'm terribly inconsistent with dental care.
-
I've never broken a bone either. Is it really that common?
-
I've also never broken a bone. My guess is it's less common for women to break bones than men, as men proportionately end up in jobs where their bodies are more at risk of injury than women do.
-
I dunno, my brother broke his ankle, like, four times in high school and college. But he played sports, which I would imagine increases your risk for broken bones about a hundredfold over being on the quiz bowl team.
-
Yeah, I don't think it's really about jobs, but rather the crazy shit young men/ kids do. I had broken 8 bones and had 3 concussions by the time I was 16. I still have had 8 broken bones and 3 concussions at 26. The ladies get to catch up later in life on this, right?
Never- had cavity
Gone skiing/snowboarding (lived in Colorado for 3 years)
Been fired
Been to a play
-
For instance, in college we used to play this game in a long hallway in our apartment, usually while drunk and high, where one person would run at the other as fast as possible and try to get to the end of the hall. The other person would try to tackle them. Nobody ever got hurt but there were at least five large holes in the walls. This is after we had somewhat matured too, so imagine what we were doing at 16 or whatever.
-
That all makes sense except that of the four people I know who I can think of off the top of my head who broke a bone, three are female.
-
I have also never broken a bone.
I don't have any fillings in my adult teeth either.
-
I've never seen attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.
-
I never used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home.
-
I've never lost a game of knifey-spooney
-
I never made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs.
-
Well I never!
-
Well I never!
Like.
-
I've never been to Spain, but I kind of like the music.
Also, I never hoist the main sail, and I’ve never swabbed the poop deck, and I never veer to starboard, 'cause I never sail at all.
-
i have never neither seen "titanic", nor "the notebook".
-
I beg your pardon. I never promised you a rose garden.
-
And I'm never, never sick at sea!
-
I've never caught a glimpse of how the others must see the faker - I'm much too fast to take that test.
-
I'm not a coward, I've just never been tested.
-
From another thread: I've never read a novel by Asimov.
-
I'm not a coward, I've just never been tested.
checkered can with a porkpie hat
-
From another thread: I've never read a novel by Asimov.
Neither have I actually. Or Arther C Clark either.
-
I think that I shall never see a poem as pretty as a tree.
I like Asimov a lot. I have never read Heinlein.
I bet there is someone here who has never had his tonsils out. I have, though.
I have never ridden the bus to school.
-
i have had neither my tonsils nor adenoids removed.
I have had my appendix removed and cool scar to prove it.
cool story, bro:
they hadnt turned appendectomy into a same-day procedure when i was 7, so i had to stay in the hospital for a week. my mom stayed with me and she had to sleep in shitty recliner they had in the room even though she was 7 months pregnant with my brothers big ass. he ended up weighing 10 Lbs when he was born.
-
Yikes.
I had my tonsils removed, but not my adenoids. I have also had my gall bladder removed, but I still have my appendix.
-
I've never broken a long bone (facial and wrist bones only). I didn't get around to them until 20, either. Given my penchant for tree climbing (always with the objective of getting as high up as possible) this remains a minor miracle. My mom was sure she was raising a future quadriplegic.
-
The only bone I ever broke was in my big toe - last year, I think. I also dislocated something during the same event.
I've never kicked anybody in the jimmy.
-
I've never kicked anybody in the jimmy.
same here. also, i have never been kicked in mine, but my brothers and i used to play "bag tag" at times.
i have never spat on anyone and no one has ever spat on me. for any reason. and i hope it stays that way.
-
I've never heard it called "the jimmy."
-
I've never heard it called "the jimmy."
Thus the "Jimmy Hat".
-
I still have my tonsils.
-

I've never kicked anybody in the jimmy.
Me either!
i have never spat on anyone and no one has ever spat on me. for any reason. and i hope it stays that way.
Don't have kids, then.
-
I've never heard it called "the jimmy."
I guess that means you've never heard the song that I consider somewhat of a precursor to Ice-T (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_T)'s Body Count (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_Count) experiment, "The Girl Tried to Kill Me" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Iceberg/Freedom_of_Speech...Just_Watch_What_You_Say), in which he exclaims "And then she said 'Gimme Gimme Gimme', jumped on my jimmy, and rode me like the wild west (http://youtu.be/tGIA1hgaqis)". Interesting take on fetishes/non-vanilla sex practices, and also a very non-traditional rap take on sexual dynamics (ie with the woman in charge). Also, this album features a spoken-word intro from Jello Biafra (http://youtu.be/lMQHVzSPTec) over a Black Sabbath sample. I feel like Ice-T is underappreciated for his rap, if that's possible.
Warning: NSFW.
-
And then she said 'Gimme Gimme Gimme', jumped on my jimmy, and rode me like the wild west (http://youtu.be/tGIA1hgaqis)
That is a fun song.
-
Man, I'm busy for a few days and you guys start a fun 6-page thread on me.
JL, I'm pretty sure Please Island closed in the past year or two. Which is sad because I loved the Adventurers' Club there.
I've never seen any Disney animated movie aside from Little Mermaid (they made us watch it in 6th grade).
I never learned to swim, throw a baseball, ski, skakeboard.
I've literally never touched a cigarette.
-
JL, I'm pretty sure Please Island closed in the past year or two. Which is sad because I loved the Adventurers' Club there.
Yes, but they replaced it with Downtown Disney. I never went to the old PI, but Downtown Disney was pretty hoppin'.
-
I never was in the cub scouts or boy scouts, although my brothers were.
-
I never was in the cub scouts or boy scouts, although my brothers were.
I was in the cub scouts but have never been camping.
-
I have never been camping!
We slept in a tent in the backyard with our kids last spring, but I have never been honest-to-goodness camping. We're hoping to do that this fall, though.
Who here has never been giraffeing?
-
Wow, that there are people who have never been camping... that's incredibly hard for me to get my head around.
I've never been in the girl guides, but that wasn't a common experience among people around me.
I've never watched "Three and a Half Men," "King of Queens," "Grey's Anatomy," "The Big Bang Theory," "How I Met Your Mother," or the majority of other sitcoms and popular TV currently running in 2011.
-
I've never watched any of those shows on TV but I've seen some on the plane because sometimes after I watch the movie I have 22.5 minutes to kill.
I've been giraffeing and camping. And fishing.
-
That people would sleep outside in a non-apocalyptic scenario is incredibly hard for me to get my head around.
-
That people would sleep outside in a non-apocalyptic scenario is incredibly hard for me to get my head around.
when you get to pee outside its like, "fuck you, societal conventions!"
-
when you get to pee outside its like, "fuck you, societal conventions!"
And when you get to shit outside it's like . . . that's disgusting! What am I, a savage?
-
I miss camping a lot. Maybe i will do that this summer.
-
That people would sleep outside in a non-apocalyptic scenario is incredibly hard for me to get my head around.
Ah, yes, but see, I've never slept outside. I've slept in a tent or a camper, camper trailer, pr motor home.
-
Ah, yes, but see, I've never slept outside. I've slept in a tent or a camper, camper trailer, pr motor home.
You're just not getting drunk enough. Well, I call that sleeping, anyway.
-
the only bad thing about sleeping under the stars is waking up covered in
dewthe piss of a nocturnal animal.
-
Ah, yes, but see, I've never slept outside. I've slept in a tent or a camper, camper trailer, pr motor home.
This is the difference between you and city kids like me and Cort. To is, sleeping in a tent is sleeping OUTSIDE.
-
This is the difference between you and city kids like me and Cort. To is, sleeping in a tent is sleeping OUTSIDE.
Exactly. Is there climate control, cable tv, and a hot shower? No? Then your ass is outside.
I've never ridden a bicycle that doesn't brake by peddling backwards.
I've never seen an entire inning of baseball or more than 10 minutes of a car race.
I've never been skiing (snow or water) or properly climbed a tree (the one I did climb had boards nailed into it)

I've never water skied either. The one time we went, I wasn't strong enough to hold on while the boat pulled me out of the water - and shortly thereafter a friend of the family tore his rectum during a wipeout. Bruises, broken bones, burns, insect bites - all these seem reasonable risks for recreational activity. A torn rectum (let alone peritonitis, strictures, etc) isn't.
-
I water skiied once. I didn't tear my rectum, but I thought I had tore my leg off. I couldn't walk for several days after that one. Never saw the doctor, presume it was a pulled muscle.
-
Exactly. Is there climate control, cable tv, and a hot shower? No? Then your ass is outside.
I haven't been inside in years, I guess. I have lived in places with none of those things too, though usually just not the first two if shit is going well.
-
This is the difference between you and city kids like me and Cort. To is, sleeping in a tent is sleeping OUTSIDE.
Winnipeg is where I've lived my whole life, and it's city with a population of over 694,000. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_100_largest_metropolitan_areas_in_Canada) If you look at Wikipedia (oh, I know but walk with me here) Boston, Seattle, Nashville, Denver all have lower populations than my fair city. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_cities_by_population) Of course my city is a nightmare of horrible urban sprawl, but like many a city, the census for my city doesn't take into account many of the smaller communities outside the city boundaries.
I've never lived anywhere but where my ancestors came from.
-
I waterskiied a lot when I was younger, because my best friend's parents had a lake house, and they would let me tag along for weekend trips several times a summer. I never got hurt, but I was under 12, so that probably had something to do with it.
-
Yeah, I used to waterski a lot, too.
I never dated anyone for more than six months that I didn't subsequently marry.

I don't believe this. I know for a fact that in your part of Canada, the snowdrifts are up to the eaves eight months of the year and the wolves are howling at your door. Don't ruin it for me.
-
Oh, yeah well that's the reason I've never slept outside. A wolf will nibble your womb right out while you sleep if you don't watch out.
-
Sergei Prokofiev, eat your womb out.
Because of Peter and the Wolf, get it? Sorry, that might only be funny inside my head.
-
I'm so glad glad someone else in TOUAMBIE knows this thing.
Wolves, don't fall for 'em 'cause they'll eat your womb out.
Seems like there's something here about the problem with wolves is that they're not willing to eat your womb out.
-
I haven't waterskied or camped since I was a teenager. Did both a lot back then.
City populations can be very misleading. You need the SMSA population to make a reasonable comparison. F'rinstance, the Boston metro area has 7.5 million people, Seattle 4.2 and Denver 3. NashVegas has about 1.6 and thus is very similar to my own hometown Metro area, Louisville at 1.5.

In Winnipeg we count the Sasquatches as people. I'm not sure if that skews things or if they're counted as people in the US too. The census can be tricky for the Inuit locally too, as they typically count Inuksuit as family members, which can lead can all sorts of problems. Likewise, census takers don't count the people in homes with snow drifts over four feet blocking the front walks unless the household has empties stacked by the door, or at least a couple drunk up mickies. It's called the drift/hoser goodwill ratio. Luckily we had a chinook around the time of the 2006 census, so I'm guessing the numbers are more accurate for that year. Considering most Canucks probably filled out their 2011 census forms at Timmie's over a double-double because Roll Up the Rim was on, I'm thinking the numbers will generally pretty good this time around too. We're not typically shit disturbers up here, eh?

Wolves are survivors they know they have to nibble through the uterus to get at that rich, life-giving placenta.

Cann'd for the most beautifully self-deprecating bit of Canadian humor I've ever read, heard or experienced. Smells, you're heck of hilarious.
-
I've never lived anywhere but where my ancestors came from.
Would that fact alone keep you from moving?
-
Inuksuit?
-
There aren't enough cans in the world for that. If Smells doesn't write a book someday, I am going to be very angry.
-
Inuksuit?
Plural of Inukshuk. (http://www.inukshukgallery.com/inukshuk.html)

Thanks. I was looking into Canadianisms and surprised that "shit disturber" isn't a universal term in the English language.
Would that fact alone keep you from moving?
Quite possibly. Considering I come from a cultural group that is basically based in my province and one province over, with a small scattering in other places in the country... I dunno. It's nice to not have to explain myself to people. I work for a Metis organization right now, and there's something really relaxing about being around a bunch of people who understand my experiences.
Then again, there is always the temptation to go somewhere completely different. I like to see a different country every other year or so, so maybe that's the panacea for that?
Edit: link issues.
-
I don't know how accurate the Wikipedia entry is, but here's what it says:
The word inuksuk means "something which acts for or performs the function of a person". The word comes from the morphemes inuk ("person") and -suk ("ersatz" or "substitute").
I can totally picture someone reading some complicated census form, trying to decide what exactly they are asking, and figuring they better include the inuksuit. I mean, sometimes that shit is hella ambiguous, you know?

I never started a thread for an Achewood strip.
-
Too late now.
-
There's another sketchbook in the fanflow and he says:
Getting back to Business. Stay tuned.
So Nabu, maybe there's still hope...

I guess I could always go back and start threads for the old strips, as was attempted before, but that didn't shake out too well.

Yeah, see, I use my iphone mainly to read the board now and it is a pain in the ass to reply, so I only do it as necessary or when I am randomly at my computer.

I wasn't trying to upbraid you at all - I was just throwing it out there. I thought it was a good idea and I actually have been rolling it over in my mind, but I noticed that I've been posting like hell because of being at work on nights and not talking to my wife as much.
-
Oh, I know. Just sometimes I want to post more but don't and I kind of feel bad about it.

Never feel bad about having a life.
-
However, it is OK to feel bad about having an iPhone.

Heh, I don't feel bad about having an iphone, sometimes though I feel like a douche/somebody who has something he absolutely doesn't need. I still just want a phone that plays music properly, and when I was buying my last phone this was the best choice. Now there are other phones that are as good or better, but again, they have a bunch of shit I don't need or even want.
-
See I went to a restaurant opening where a bunch of hipsters were posting to their iPhones, and I couldn't decide if they were douches, or if I am a plebeian. I think I fall firmly on the side of going to a restaurant to eat.
I never owned a cellphone at all until work gave me one, and even then, it's only for work.
-
I actually never feel bad about having an iPhone because it makes the commute much more bearable. I used to have a Blackberry and it was a gold-plated dyed-in-the-wool piece of flaming dogshit.
-
I have a smartphone but it's not an iPhone. I am really happy now that I have the internet in my pocket. It's too bad that as a phone it's a piece of shit, but I don't spend as much time on the phone as the internet so I am willing to put up with the tradeoff.
-
So, this came up today at dinner with my parents:
I never walked in on my parents having sex.
Thank heaven.
-
have I mentioned before that I am kind of worried that my parents have no sex life at all?
Like, with the layout of our house, there is no way for them to have sex. I don't remember their door ever being closed, I never heard noises... nothing.
-
I thought that for a while too, but then two things happened:
1) My mom indicated otherwise
2) I became a parent and had to figure out how to make it work
In a lot of ways, having kids in the house is like being a teenager again -- trying not to get caught, doing it at weird times and occasionally weird places.
-
that is kind of what my life is like with roommates sometimes. Especially when I had the roommate who would open the door and walk into my bedroom, I imagine kids love to do that.
-
I never walked in on my folks, either, but I only have one memory of my father living in the same house with my mother, so it's not that odd.
-

Oh, gracious...you just brought back a repressed memory from college...I can't tell it in public, though.
Yikes.
