Title: College Football 2011
Post by: miles on September 04, 2011, 12:21:41 am
College football kicks off for Nabu and me right about now. Oregon has already been penalized three times on the first drive, and we're punting. Fuck. Nabu, hope your team is doing better against the SEC right now. Lister, that was a hard fought win today. I forget who everyone else likes.

Alls I know is Syracuse'll be probably in that particular hell of awful where they're bad but not so bad that they don't get invited to a bowl game no one has ever heard of.

Welp, now that Oregon is effectively out of the championship race, barring some fuckup by LSU, Bama or Oklahoma, I really hope this is your year, Nabu.

Stanford will be very tough but we're certainly still in contention for the Rose Bowl. We played a solid fourth quarter, and if Harris ends up playing, and Barner and LaMichael stay healthy, we should be back to form by next week. Especially if a couple of those freshman can learn how to hang on to the ball.

I wasn't trying to be a dick, just warn you west coast hippies that these Oklahoma and Texas teams don't fuck around.  When OU loses in the national championship game (gets blown out) there is a pretty large group that wants stoops fired.

You don't have to tell me that Oregon has some serious weaknesses, and that there's a pattern of failing to execute in big games. And that college football is small time compared to the south and midwest. But Oregon has a solid foundation, which it hasn't had for most of its history. As long as these scandals don't do too much damage.

Man, remember when my Alma Mater fucked up the Sooners that one time?

Anyway, that was lots of fun and now the SEC boosters can shut the fuck up for a while, but they won't.

Boy howdy, was it annoying as hell to not see Nationals-Mets highlights on SportsCenter Sunday morning, in favor of a bazillion college football recaps, many of which had scores like 41-7.

JMO, YMMV, but the early part of the college football season is mostly bullshit.

Dudes, even as a AQ conference school fan I agree that the BCS is fucked. I want playoffs as much as the next guy (could have benefited us in 2001 for sure). And sure, first couple weeks especially feature some seriously fucktarded match-ups. But there were also some amazing games over the weekend, and that's going to be the case every week. This year I actually look forward to watch Oregon every week without the rankings pressure. Or I keep telling myself that. But seriously, there's gonna be some exciting football this year, regardless of whether you think the championship is legit.

I used to really like the David and Goliath aspect of the opening week matches until I learned that Goliath is paying David for his part.  Now I realize it's just more sleazy money ruining the game.  Somewhere on this board a couple of years ago I likened it to prostitution. I wish I could remember what I said, but I don't have the CJ power in me.

Yeah, those games dropped a $100k into the athletic department, but you gotta pay for bitches softball somehow, right?

Hey, I don't blame David for taking the money.  It's a victimless crime, right?

A few very good games (Michigan v Notre Dame, damn!) but no shocking upsets that I'm aware of.

I was there in Eugene to witness the Wolf Pack slaughter. While it was awesome to catch an Oregon game, I felt bad. I really like Nevada. Also, Oregon still has some things that need major work.

Next week I'm very much looking forward to the Oklahoma/Florida State and BYU/Utah games, but I'll likely have to miss both.

We do not play the Little Sisters of the Poor. We play very fine schools on any given day. (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=5845736)

Gord, your team edged the Little Sisters of the Poor by 5 in your house. BSU took them apart by 25 in Toledo. (http://espn.go.com/ncf/boxscore?gameId=312592649) Hm. Good luck with the "Murderer's Row" section of your schedule.

College football exerts a little too much influence on colleges (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/06/sports/ncaafootball/former-coach-at-penn-state-is-charged-with-abuse.html?_r=1&src=me&ref=sports). Penn State is going to get fucked over this, I think - and rightly so.

If you see a dude molesting a boy, then report it to your supervisor, then that dude keeps showing up to your work because you are allowing him to use your athletic department to lure more young boys then you deserve to die, fuck worrying about the dudes legacy.

Bobby Bowden will always be the champ.  Get rid of Paterno's wins from 1999-current.

Also, I grew up an OSU fan and went there my first year of college until I decided it was stupid to go to a worse school in a worse city just because I don't like OUs football team, so it is kind of exciting and confusing right now.  Also, the OSU fan in me is 100% sure they will lose to OU or Tech.  Hopefully wrong.

Also also, I really wanted OU and OSU to be undefeated then OSU beat them.  Damn OU can't live up to their bargain.

Also also also, both that OSU-K State game and LSU-Alabama were kind of the worst games I have ever seen.

Meanwhile, Houston keeps destroying every opponent and can't crack the top 10 and they have the best passer in the history of the game, apparently.

It's a tough gig when you aren't in an AQ conference. When that happens you actually get judged on multiple seasons, not just the current one.

Career records in college sports don't mean all that much, because you can't get them if you don't start your freshman year or leave early. The best players often leave early.

True. Winning percentage might mean more, but they aren't really comparable either. On the other hand, if the numbers are really astronomical, they can sort of be compared to folks in the same exact situation. For instance, Moore (hey, I'm Johnny One-Note!) has only lost two games in four years. That's pretty good no matter what your schedule is.

Houston, you gotta wait in David Klingler purgatory a few more years.

Because Klingler was a great passer as well? Sorry, I don't get your meaning.

And before the early out period, there was a good chunk of decades in which Freshman could not play Varsity sports.

Yeah, and not only has he had a full four year he also was given an extra year of eligibility because he sat out most of the 2010 season.  So he's got an extra 3 games there too.  And college football in general plays more games per season these days.  Taking all of this into account I can now see that he's probably pretty mediocre.
Title: Re: College Football 2011
Post by: Nabubrush on November 07, 2011, 09:17:32 pm
No, he's good. He may not be all-time-ever great, but his stats, especially this year, are insane. A nine-touchdown game, against anybody . . . that's pretty good. Andrew "feel-good-story-of-the-year" Luck's best game is 4.

The Klingler thing, I don't know. I do notice that he had an eleven-touchdown game against Eastern Washington University. I mean, they're no Rice, but still.

In what capacity? In that he didn't immediately call for JoePa's head on a plate?

Look, I beg to differ. Read this one:
http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/7205085/growing-penn-state

I didn't go to Penn State, but grew up in Pennsylvania. My mom went to Penn State, as did a lot of my high school friends. JoePa is basically Jesus there.

To have this kind of news come out about a football program that you thought was one of the last truly good things on this earth... it's hard to process. If you're not attached, yeah, it's easy to say that everyone involved are monsters who deserve to be fired, imprisoned, what have you. And I'm not saying that's incorrect. I'm not suggesting for a minute that anyone involved should get off easy. I'm just saying, excuse us if we aren't all as bloodthirsty as you. Yeah, there's a certain amount of denial there. I ultimately want justice to be done. I just don't personally want to be part of a pitchfork-and-torches mob. I think that's how Pos feels right now. Call it what you want. If this had happened at an institution you cared deeply about, you would probably feel the same.

I must say I'm surprised I've gotten no replies to this. Given the number of people on the Interwebs in general who seem to think if you don't immediately renounce your Penn State fanhood completely and utterly, that you are in favor of child molestation. Thanks for not being those people.

They did the right thing to fire JoePa and the university president at this point. Still plenty of people out for blood, though.

It is very easy, and fundamentally true, to say everyone connected to this should have done more. But it's one of those things that's too easy to second-guess from afar. People like to fantasize about what they'd do in combat, or if they were mugged, but really, until you're actually THERE, who knows how the hell it's going to go down. So in a situation like this, when there's a lot of money and power at stake, I'd like to think that most people would have done the right thing and called the cops or whatever. Hell, McQuery should have barged into the shower and punched Sandusky in the face. But I am not prepared to say that Paterno and McQuery are now irredeemable people who should be shunned forever if I haven't walked a mile in their shoes.

Obviously, whoever at the higher levels decided they'd be better off covering it up is a grade-A moron and a terrible person (or people as the case may be).

JoePa is basically Jesus.

Actually, in this scenario he's more akin to the Pope covering up for one of his molesting priest.

Duuuude, we cross posted.  I think that Paterno made some mistakes and losing his job is a fair punishment.  I haven't followed the case enough to know how complicit he was.  But if he knew anything at all losing his job is fair.

Yup.

Well, it doesn't look good. I'm not going to call for Joe's head on a plate, but that whole thing is fucked and there's plenty of complicity to go around. I'm actually pretty surprised at the amount of lucidity from JoePa. I thought they were just propping him up at this point.

All I'm wondering is if Paterno is going to make it until next year or not without the job. If he does, we're talking serious Death Pool candidate.

Indeed. He himself has said the main reason he hadn't retired years ago is that he isn't sure what he'd do with himself. He didn't want to end up like Bear Bryant--leave the job that's basically encompassed your whole life, and then be dead within a year.

I'm trying to figure out what would be appropriate for a guy who set up a chicken coop to play chicken hawk at. There was a guy a while ago, hockey coach, who did this with a juniors team (if I recall correctly). It was kind of a big deal because one of the pros he was involved with tried to kill his dad or something? (Whoops, conflating the Graham James (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_James_%28ice_hockey%29) case with the Mike Danton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Danton)/David Frost (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Frost_%28sports_agent%29) deal.)

I don't have kids, but if I did I'd be putting a pretty close eye on the folks I put in charge of them in situations like that. Of course, in the Sandusky case, there wasn't really anyone to look out for those kids.

Ha ha, I totally misread the question.  I thought he was asking what was the best way to go about being a chicken hawk.

Yeah, what's appropriate.  For Sandusky burning at the stake or stoning would be cool.  But spending the rest of his life in prison would satisfy.  As for Paterno, it was unclear from reading that Grand Jury report that he was ever told about the butt fuck*ng.  When it got to him it was described as "hossplay." Unless I read that wrong as well. So for him losing his job is enough.

Also, I have a question.  When did "Joe Pa" become a thing?  I had never heard that before this scandal arose.

I'm waiting for Paul to point out that it doesn't matter that Oregon had its BCS title hopes dashed tonight because it's not really a championship anyway. Come on dude, help a brother out.

Also, Chip Kelly is a god, but that last drive was like the worst coaching I've ever witnessed from him. He was playing for the tie, which basically is the opposite of what he always does, what he represents. Guy has fuck*ng balls. They must have retracted tonight when he decided too early to go for the field goal tie (didn't you see the Boise State v Nevada/TCU games? Don't mean to throw salt on fresh wounds Nabu, but seriously. We were on a fuck*ng roll. Only God (or a god as it turned out) could have stopped us). Oh well, if we beat Oregon State we clinch the North, and if we don't, well, ah, fuck it. I hope UCLA (or Utah? Jesus) beats Stanford just for chuckles. If it weren't for my new position at work I'd be at that Oregon State game. Goddamnit.

I'm in Vegas tonight, and was thinking about putting some money down on the game. Thing is, though I'm reluctant to admit it, I'm a bit superstitious and won't bet on games in which I have an emotional stake. So at least I'm only out $40 this weekend, as opposed to a couple hundo or so.

Keith. Sorry dude. Though I took some pleasure in both OK teams being upset. But only because it helps to know I'm not the only one grieving. If it helps I've been listening to a lot of Flaming Lips this weekend. But...

FUCK THE SEC. Fuck them in the eye. If we get an LSU/Bama title game goddamnit I am going to occupy fuck*ng New Orleans. I'm not crazy about OU or OSU (go Baylor!) but I was hoping that if it wasn't Oregon, Boise State would knock them off their perch, and if not them, Stanford (shudder), and if not them, well, anyone else. Sorry Lister.

Rambling mean-spirited post, but in my defense I am a bit (lot) intoxicated. I need a fuck*ng burger and probably more booze.

Goddamnit! Playoffs bitches! Need playoffs. Petition. Also, I'd like a rematch. Petition to allow USC post-season play. fuck*ng Lane Kiffin. Also, I have a serious thing for Kristen Wiig. But SNL isn't that funny anymore. I'm not old enough to be like, Chevy and Belushi and Akroyd is where SNL lived and died. But I really like Wayne's World? I should stop mixing intoxicants. I've noticed that when people post drunk/otherwise there are serious spelling errors. I think I reduce those because I am really self-conscious especially when I'm drunk/otherwise. Grammar, that's another story.

So SNL just had this fuck*ng terrible Ricky Gervais impersonation among others. But I would like to fuck Kristen Wiig. She did a decent but easy Kathie Lee thing just now. But why does SNL think Gervais needs to be mocked? He's one of my fuck*ng heroes.

You said it better than i could.

GO HOUSTON!

They cracked the top 10.  That's probably the best they could hope for.  I don't think a U of Houston team has ever been 11-0 before.

Their highest finish ever in the polls was 4th in 1976.  I saw that team play several games including a road game victory against SMU in the cotton bowl.  That was a great memory.  My family drove up from Houston that morning, all 5 of us, my parents, my brother, my sister and me.  i would have been 14 years old.  I remember it was a nice crisp sunny autumn day.  According to Wikipedia it was Oct. 16 and the Cougars won the game 29-6.

Of course all of their games were road games that season.  I don't know what brought this about, but when they joined the Southwest Conference that year they were required to play all of their conference home games the first two years at Rice Stadium.  I guess it was like a hazing ritual or something.  Didn't make much difference, they won the conference those first two years.

The Coogs are 12-0 and all anyone around here cares about is the also rans UT and A&M.  Apparently their 118 year old rivalry is coming to an end because A&M is going to a different conference next season.  Boo fuck*ng hoo.

I think I'm going to the CUSA Championship next Saturday.  Hope I can get tickets.

I should stop mixing intoxicants. I've noticed that when people post drunk/otherwise there are serious spelling errors. I think I reduce those because I am really self-conscious especially when I'm drunk/otherwise. Grammar, that's another story.
You're doing it wrong.  When you're intoxicated you're not supposed to care about crap like punctuation.  That's why the posts go to hell.  Also, garrulousness, thick fingers, and a sudden desire to post on every topic before you lose consciousness.

Of course there comes a point in the evening (or day) where I am completely unable to type or talk, but I've given up long before then, and it takes a while to get there. I can usually tell well in advance when things are going to go really bad, and make an effort to go somewhere where I can puke and sleep it off. This is why I've only been in one fight.

One New Year's Eve several years ago my friends were amused that the first thing I ordered at the last bar we made it to was a water. I don't remember this. Apparently I'm a pretty responsible drunk.

One of my Facebook friends jeered at me yesterday

Quote
Well, if the toughest team on my schedule was UCLA.....
I mean.. whoo hoo... you beat Tulane.

Well then, why rank them in the top 10?

Let's have a playoff, let 'em get booted in the first round if they ain't that good.

The history of sport is filled with underdogs winning.  There are no Cinderella stories (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinderella_story) in the BCS.

Broadly, very broadly, teams don't get to choose who they play.

It is funny, though, that Georgia sucks when they're on BSU's schedule but they are really good when any other SEC team has to play them (and you can sub in anyone you want for Georgia/BSU in this sentence).

Georgia is the only team in the SEC I like, because a friend played for them years ago.

Dang it. Looking like a LSU/Bama title game. I'd actually be for LSU, even though they beat us. They are just a fuck*ng spectacular team this year, and I don't hate their coach. Also, there's a guy at work who is an Alabama fan, and he's a douche.

Yeah, pretty much all out of conference games are either schedule padding or the occasional high-profit out of conference rivalry-type game.

The only reason for a BCS-league team to schedule an out-of-conference game that they could actually lose is because they could make a boatload of money.

A team like Houston has no opportunity to get a "championship-level schedule" and even a team like Boise has to win for years and years straight to even begin to get a chance to, only if they've been successful for so long that a team from another conference things they can make so much money off the game that the risk of losing is justified.

Major college sports, basketball and football, have become weird byzantine profit structures hidden behind the mythology of amateurism and basically need to be burnt down to be saved.

The thing is that those teams don't need any money, and all non-BCS teams that play OOC games against BCS teams actually are the ones getting paid. I'll confess I don't really know which direction the money goes when an LSU plays an Oregon.

A team like Houston has no opportunity to get a "championship-level schedule"

Houston is in a tough position.  The only chance they have at winning the championship is if they play the schools that are perceived as top tier programs, but since they have been winning a lot the last couple of years none of those perceived top schools are gonna schedule them and risk a loss.

Everybody down here is bemoaning the end of the Texas A&M - UT rivalry.  But there is no reason for that rivalry to end except that neither program is going to put a tough team like A&M or Texas on their schedule  if they don't have too.  So basically the rivalry goes away so A&M can pad their won loss record by beating up on North Texas State or Abilene Christian or whoever they pay to take the fall.
Title: Re: College Football 2011
Post by: Nabubrush on November 27, 2011, 08:48:46 pm
As for as the UT - A&M thing, there's a guy up here who is hit pretty hard by it, but I can't give a fuck.

In terms of the Houston thing, tell me all about it. The teams can't just schedule a top-tier team, they basically have to have all of their out-of0conference games be AQ conference schools. They don't necessarily have to be ranked, but every other game has to come from Pac-12, SEC, etc or no love. It's hard enough to schedule two of those a year. And of course, even if that non-AQ team beats those other 5 teams (shall we say Georgia, VaTech, Arizona State, UCLA, and Baylor), those are teams that still recruit better than a Houston or BSU does, so the team is going to get beat up and will probably lose a couple in conference, and the point will be moot because you'll be looking at the Frankenberry Bowl. BSU is 10-1 and the winningest team in the FBS over the last 7 years, and since they lost to TCU (unbeaten in conference) they aren't eligible for a BCS game, not by a long shot. It's hard to think a team from the Big East deserves a shot over BSU.
Title: Re: College Football 2011
Post by: miles on November 27, 2011, 09:35:57 pm
I am so fuck*ng pissed that UCLA didn't even bother to show up last night against USC. Now for the next year, all we're gonna hear from USC fans is that they beat the best team in the Pac-12 (there is no doubt that Oregon is better than USC, last Saturday was an off night--it would sort of be like arguing that Nevada was better than Boise State last year), narrowly lost to the second best and crushed the Pac-12 South champs. If UCLA could have pulled off an upset, they would have been the champs even had USC been eligible, but if they would have at least just made a game of it...

I guess they literally had nothing to play for. They knew going in that they'd be playing Oregon in Eugene and couldn't risk many injuries, but USC wanted to show the world who the true Pac-12 South champs are.

And it's right, they are. I'd love another shot at them next week. I think the NCAA is corrupt and I think this post-season prohibition is bullshit. The people hurt worst are those who had little to nothing to do with the scandal, which probably could have been prevented anyway if it weren't for the NCAA with their bullshit rules and selective enforcement and misguided punishment.

Major college sports, basketball and football, have become weird byzantine profit structures hidden behind the mythology of amateurism and basically need to be burnt down to be saved.

Exactly. Take someone like Reggie Bush. A tremendously talented athlete and he's treated like a celebrity and makes a lot of people a lot of money in ticket sales and merchandising, and he can't be compensated beyond tuition and a few hundred dollars for food and rent? Bullshit. I almost think that college football is more tightly and chaotically regulated than the securities industry.

Also annoyed that Stanford has a better overall record than Oregon, though it's better for us all around that they won. Unless some crazy shit goes down and they end up in the title game... I would be very upset. But the only ranked non-conference team they played was Notre Dame last night and, well, they're not ranked anymore.

Better name, as one site gave it: "Zombie Cotton Bowl." The Cotton Bowl [game] ditched the Cotton Bowl [stadium] in favor of the Cowboys' new digs. So this game is being played at the Cotton Bowl stadium.
