So, I'm on the bandwagon with you all, hopefully for good.

Yay, Jeepers, way to put some conscious thought into your way of life!  It is so great that you are recognizing your need to re-examine your path.

As for the image of all of us riding on a wagon together... that is a fanciful idea.

Anyway: way to be kid!  (I call you kid though you're the same age as I am, but I do this to people twice my age - we're all big kids really)  Basically, for me the healthy living turn taken here is part two of the major steps taken by me toward wellness.  Part one happend about a year and a half ago, when I realized I had developed a fairly serious problem with hitting the bong, where it had become a nearly daily thing of many many a bowl.  Both my SO and I stopped cold turkey.  It wasn't easy.  The most difficult part for me was no longer having something to numb me when I'd had a stressful or otherwise shitty day.  It was so easy to get high, watch cartoons and totally not deal with my emotions.

The problem with stopping chemical abuse (booze or otherwise) is that it is often a social problem - you likely have a circle of friends (or even family) who abuse their bodies in exactly the same way you're doing to yourself.  Which can make significantly unhealthy treatment of your body seem normal, even when it's not.  The smartest thing you can do right now is let your drinking buddies know the decision you've made and why you've made it.  I made it clear to my friends that I would continue to respect whatever choices they made when it came to their own use or non-use, and that I continued to expect the same from them as I made the change.  Some of them were cool with this, some were pissed off, and one friend even got upset and assumed I would rat her out to the cops.  Also, include your non-drinking buddies (or make some) and let them know you will be spending more time with them while you get your shit together.  I'm still friends with the people I smoked up with, but I did take a little break from them to get my head straight.  Also my paranoid friend needed a break from me to realize that I wasn't asking her to change, or planning to turn her in - just making personal choices toward my own health.  Basically, if you're open and respectful to everybody, they will come to treat you with openness and respect too.

Jeepers: Something worth knowing is that while smoking increases your risks of lung cancer smoking *and* heavy drinking actually makes it much much worse.
Here's science in your eye!
That first one actually looks like I'm contradicting myself but if you check down the bottom it mentions a higher risk for heavy drinkers. Which is the point. A glass of something sweet with your ciggy won't hurt too much but if you're putting away a bottle a day as well as smoking thats hell of bad news for you.

I mean... you're already planning on getting off them already so you don't need to know this, but just in case you need extra encouragement getting off one or the other will probably be a very good thing for you.

Damn, now I feel like I need to get in on this. I weigh... let's see.
Ouch, 209 of your foreign poounds. Damn, I feel much thinner in metric.
If I could drop about 30 of those I'd be feeling pretty good, 40 would be better. I started a new job recently and have been walking there and back, it's about an hour each way and I do it about three or four times I week but it's not exactly power walking or anything and I cancel it out with all the crap I eat anyway so for starters I'm going to try cutting back the sugary crap. Mainly the massive amounts of cola I ingest daily which, since I am pathetically weak, I'm just going to switch for the no sugar variety (caffiene is not a negotiable intake).
Also going to start bringing more fruit with me to uni so I don't buy my lunch every day, the refec turkey sandwiches are grelicious but I must be strong. I love the hell out of mandarins and Bananas so there's no reason I can't be having them for lunch instead (bringing sandwiches and such with me just doesn't work, even if I dump them in the fridge as soon as I get to the office I just *know* they're not fresh).
It may also be time to renew my gym membership, or alternately start going for runs along the river at night, it's getting just about the right temperature for it too.

I know my goals and such are crummy compared to your grand schemes but really I just needed to get this down somewhere so I can look at it later and say 'you can't back out now son, you said it on the INTERNET!'.

I just want to not die this year.  And to feel better.  And to have women look at my body with lust in their hearts.

Okay so maybe "just" isn't a strong enough word.

Anyway, the web site is just one little page now.  I crammed it full of Web 2.0 goodness* though because I can.

* Yeah, this thing is pretty much like one of those "can you spot 20 Web 2.0 features/memes in this page?" thing from Highlights magazine:

  • URL hack domain name (where the domain spells something in English) - check
  • Garish colours and bright logo- check
  • Huge text - check
  • Huge background image - check
  • Background image that scales to the size of your browser pane - check
  • Gradients - check
  • Rounded corners - check
  • Unnecessary transparencies - check
  • Casual diction in help texts - check
  • One sentence privacy policy - check
  • Ajax-form that submits your email address without loading a new page - check
  • DHTML/DOM manipulation that degrades to functioning like a normal web form if you don't have javascript turned on - check

Okay, that last one isn't a common Web 2.0 thing, but it should be.

Anyway, yeah, I spent like, a whole day on that one frikkin' page that doesn't do anything but collect email addresses so people can be notified when there actually is something to DO there.

Of course, much of that time was spent figuring out the best way to handle asynchronous requests, and building data shuffling objects that will be used throughout the real site when I do actually build it.

NOTHING IS WASTED WE USE THE WHOLE BUFFALO

Way to go man!

14 pounds is a significant accomplishment in its self.

I hope we can all be as successful in our improvements.

I've been sick (bad cold + kidney infection), and that's sorta thrown things off. The antibiotics totally crush my appetite, but if I take them on an empty stomach I get seriously sick. I think I'm down a pound or two, but that may have been muscle. I haven't been able to get much real exercise in about a week and a half.

Good luck with the not drinking, Jeepers. I'll be pulling for you.

I don't think under normal circumstances your body would metabolize muscle ahead of fat. Maybe you are somewhat dehydrated? That's where my weight goes when I'm sick.

Correct me if I'm wrong but fat weighs less than muscle so if, through lethargy or illness you lose some muscle mass via fat conversion you would also lose pounds yes?

That's the way I understood mite's comment anyway.  I could be totally off as I'm not Captain Biology*.

Does this guy live in the building with you in the same way that Tyler Durden lived with the narrator in Fight Club?

Now now, he said sleep not dreams.

Sleep is obviously Death's cousin and is brother to Sanity, Sex, Sluggishness, Smashing, Silence and Soccer.

Classy with the crossed out destruction though, a nice touch, would read again.
