I have no buffer zone. I need to be blowing people out. GOD DAMMIT WHAT AM I GOING TO DO ABOUT MY PROBLEMS.

I appreciate you two combining for 20 strikeouts. I don't care for a 7.50 ERA and no wins.

Gary Sheffield is now likely done for the season. He also happens to be on the can't-cut list. At least now Chris Carpenter will have some company.

The playoffs are going to be fun! Weee!

I saw that news whilst on the elliptical and watching football, and I thought 'oh man, I hope I play whoever has Sheff soon'.

The weird thing is, I'm pretty sure I cut him earlier this year when he was off to a spectacularly awful start. Then I added him back once he got back to his usual self. I guess this begs the question: can someone go from can-cut to can't-cut during the season?

I think I had a cup of coffee with Sheff as well.

Yes, you can go from can't-cut to can-cut and back in the Yahoo leagues but... it is hazy who determines these changes. Some sort of fantasy baseball illuminati hanging around in the Yahoo offices, by all that I can tell.

Don't worry, though. You are going to beat me this week because Brandon Webb is going to get his revenge on me as many times as he possibly can in this game.

Biggest mistake in the entire TOUAMB league this season, my givin' up on Webb.

If I had Webb and a healthy Figgins instead of Markakis and Youklis, I figure I'd have 150 wins right now. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Yeah, I did kind of fleece you with that Webb trade. But really, who could have foreseen him going on an absolute tear that would leave him two shutouts short of breaking the all-time scoreless innings streak? I'm pretty sure his ERA was in the low 4's / high 3's when I got him.

Really, it's my only solace when I consider the inevitable trouncing I'll receive in the playoffs.

I realize that it sounds like petty obsessing, because we're in the last week of the regular season and I have a slim hold on first place despite my mistakes but...

I mean, what's killing me in the pitching category is that everyone else is carrying seven starting pitchers, I'm carrying five and... all the good starters were claimed months ago, so dumping a reliever for a sixth starter wouldn't do anything good for me.

But if I had Figgins, I'd be covering my need for SBs off the bench AND my back-up third baseman, meaning that both Markakis (SBs) and Youklis (back-up 3B) would be rendered redundant and I could roll with eleven position players and still have a reasonable chance of getting around sixty offensive "starts" a seven-day week out of the maximum sixty-three.

Eleven hitters and yet every "position" covered one more than the minimum... two 3B eligibilities, two C eligs, two SS eligs, three 1B eligs, four 2B eligs and four OF eligs.

...which would mean that I could carry six starters and four relievers without dropping anyone and the sixth would be Webb.

Leaving me a fuck*ng murderer's row of four ace starters... Beckett, Santana, Lackey and Webb... along with two solid #3-type starters, Bannister and El Duque, to stat-build for me on the backend.

...which would mean that I was no longer giving up on the win, strikeout and stolen bases most weeks.

You need to get in a league that isn't mostly populated with idiots, I think.

Samefully, a month from now I'm going to be complaining that the equipment guy for the Giants never brings long enough spikes when they play go on the road and play open-air teams.

Samefully is a perfectly cromulent word.

We are all embiggened by its duketastic qualities.

I hope it's not rubbing it in too badly to point out that after I snatched up Figgins for the first time, he dropped below the Mendoza line and I cut him, too.  I guess I was just fortunate enough to realize my mistake sooner.

It's interesting to look back at my Week 1 roster and see all the changes I've made since then.  Mike Gonzalez in my bullpen?  Josh Barfield?  Chad Tracy?  Ryan Freel?  That guy was actually part of the core of my team for most of the first half.  And don't forget this guy, who I only now have the courage to admit was high up in my pre-draft rankings.  What was I smoking?  It's a wonder I even have a winning record.  I don't feel like I can claim much credit for replacing them, either; most of that came about pretty serendipitously.  About half the players on my team now I originally added as temporary fixes when someone got injured or I needed an extra start out of my rotation on a given week.  All's well that ends well, I guess.
