@achewood Irish Nachos are a charming take on the original, but I wonder what Uighur Nachos would be like. A mutton leg on a crisped pita?

I would caution you about letting your guard down regardless.  Melack's pretend football team beat me handily in Week 8 or something with guys on byes and out due to injury.

PM Somebody nice and shame her into paying attention.

Well I figured she'd be somewhat hands-on, given that she's the Commish and all. Although having a guy on her roster who is in the AHL is pretty fuckin' cool.

Don't underestimate the ability to do well with little to no effort. For example, I'm in a fantasy basketball league at work with a bunch of website traffic optimization analysts (basically, numbers guys) and even though I stopped paying attention to my team in the first month, I'm still somehow not in last place.

But then again, actually excelling requires a tremendous amount of work. I devoted an ungodly amount of hours to my fantasy baseball team in order to win. In the end, was it worth it? Of fuckin' course it was! But it still took an ungodly amount of hours.

Does he get NHL credit for his AHL performances?

That's why I can pretty much only do fantasy football. I just don't know enough about baseball and hockey - and I love watching baseball and hockey.

PTI is right - football IS the American Pasttime now.

Yeah, I'm with you, there.

I know way way way too much about baseball, just enough about football to hold a conversation about it and... pretty much nothing about hockey. I like watching it live and in person but I don't know what any of the positions actually mean or what the lines are or what icing means and so on and so on.

It is hard to play a Pretend Game if you do not understand the Actual Rules.

Here's the thing about hockey - why it's fantastic live, and so shit on television.

I went to an ECHL (AA-level) game many years back between the (then) Hampton Roads Admirals and the Richmond Renegades. It was a heated rivalry. This game was probably the best game I'll ever see live in any sport. It went to a penalty shootout, the home team won, etc. etc. Our seats were first row, with a clear-as-day line of sight to one of the goals. A shot was attempted, deflected into the stick of one of the Richmond defensemen, who then shot it towards the boards to clear it out. Toward the boards. Right in front of me. Life... time... slowed down. The world started to fog out into the haze, like that episode of Star Trek TNG where Dr. Crusher thinks the universe is collapsing. It was me and the puck, and we were coming to Jesus together, me and it. And then, in an instant, a loud crack, and the puck was gone, down the rink towards the other end.

And then I pissed myself.

You just can't get that on television. And I enjoy watching hockey on TV, I watch all things sports on TV. But I've never had to change my ##### because of a hockey play I saw on television.

Exactly. The AHL hockey in Utica, Syracuse and Albany in my youth and teens?

Up close and personal, rad rad stuff.

Television just sort of... cannot... capture it and radio's even worse for it.

We used to have an ECHL team over in Upper Marlboro, MD.  I organized several group trips to game, and I always told everyone, "There WILL be a fight, or I will personally refund your ticket price."  I never once had to pay up.

Everybody in minor league hockey's trying to make it up to the bigs as an enforcer and, hence, is trying to fight their way up.

That is the true beauty of minor-league hockey.

That didn't stop me from playing the baseball, goddamnit. Thanks for nothing you bastards.

Note: It actually is not very hard to play the pretend game without knowing the rules. There are no points awarded for icing. You don't even have to know that such a thing exists.

Well, okay, but I don't even know what the positions and statistics mean in Pretend Hockey.

Watching it live, all you need to know is what a goal is and how awesome it is to watch a fight.

It is actually much more complicated when you are pretending.

Man, I will play, but I think it is too late.  If it is not I am in, even though I have seen maybe 10 hockey games in my life.

You guys are right though, I would rather see the CHL OKC Blazers than x vs. y on tv.

Hockey sucks hard on TV. The only reason it is my number 2 TV sport is because I love it so much and am far away from the rink most of the time.

Wow. Green Bay spotted 'em 14 and Seattle's still getting demolished.

Too bad that I can't take some of this Ryan Grant and apply it to my fantasy team retroactively...

That game would have been awesome if it was still close during the heavy snow.

Let's hope this next game can be better.  Jax just threw a 30 yard pass on 4th, so...
