Ah, Thai food.  I used to love Thai food.  After the sever food poisoning from my favorite Thai restaurant, the weeks of pain, vomiting, inability to leave a 10 foot radius of my bathroom, the ensuing hospitalization... Not so much.  I loved it so much, but the connotations are perminant.  I see a Thai place and think, maybe one day... But that day is not today.  My next door neighbors are Thai, and the smells coming from their kitchen are like heaven.  It breaks my heart a little bit.

I like Thai food, but when I see those peanuts on top of my Pad Thai, I get angry and spend a lot of time picking peanuts out of my noodles. For some reason, I have never learned to ask for no peanuts. Maybe I subconciously want to eat cold Pad Thai.

My daughter's best friend in the whole wide world has parents from Afghanistan.   When she comes home from playing I like to sniff her hair, because the scent of Afghani cooking permeates it.  Heavenly.  Sometimes they have us over for dinner.  This always feels very asymmetric to me, since there's nothing I could possibly do to reciprocate in kind.  So I just watch the kids whenever I can while the parents are running chores.

There is nothing sadder than a food-poisoning-related food aversion. I count myself lucky that the only one I ever managed to acquire was related to beans, and I didn't even like beans before the unfortunate Girl Scout camp incident that made me permanently averse.

So, anyway, inspired by this thread, I had Triscuit nachos last night. Super-excellent.

In a lot of ways, I frequently display behavior of questionable wisdom.  Although in this case I was referring to sniffing my daughter, not her friend.  I realize that doesn't sound much better.

I used to love chunky, and then I loved creamy. But then I developed a peanut allergy in my late 20s, suddenly; so the question no longer plagues me. I now eat cashew butter, which is tasty, and only comes in "gritty," I guess, so it seems a nice compromise; although I miss Thai food something terrible.

Re: snacks...

a big bowl of Nicoise or picholine olives, and an icy cold pastis. I am also a cheese fanatic and will eat nearly every kind of cheese (save for the wormy kind and the kind commonly described as "process cheese food").

Thinking on snacks has made me realize I actually do have one guilty pleasure, despite what my post in that thread says: Ketchup flavored Pringles. I have to have my friend in Canucktopia ship them to me a few times a year, as I have yet to find them here in the US. I don't have any idea how I do it, but I can down a whole can of those in record time. They are so awful they're delicious. If I'm feeling extra naughty, I'll eat them with pickle slices on top.

Yes, MoF loves the salt.

um. I invented something good. I am  sure it has been done before.

You know that "Queso" salsa? It's basically processed cheese with peppers in it?
And, you know Velveeta Macaroni and Cheese?
A little bit of one in the other... is pretty good.

But then you leave your bowl of it on the first floor in the kitchen, and some asshole throws it out or steals it or something, shit, i don't know. there goes one of 2 bowls I own.

I had no idea these were a Canadian thing.  I don't like ketchup chips of any variety.  I don't eat Pringles much, but when I do, the pizza flavoured ones are my fav.  They are so easy to consume.  It's something about how quickly the starch breaks down in your mouth I think.  I had an incident with a can of them many a year ago.  Stoned out of my mind while camping I said to my boyfriend, "hey let's have some Pringles."  He then told me a very brief story about... something, held out his hand for some chips, and I handed him the empty cannister.  The only explanation is that I was just cramming those chips into my mouth, but I had only a vague awareness of eating at all while listening to him.

Oh, ketchup chips! I had forgotten they exist. They are in fact very nasty, but the thought makes me nostalgic for Canada.

Zillions of years ago, for a little while there were Taco flavored Goldgiraffe crackers. I still miss those. They were kind of like the pizza flavored except a million times better. I guess they were ahead of their time, before Mexican food was everywhere and supermarkets had whole salsa departments, and they went extinct.  I think more recently they had something like a nacho cheese flavor but it wasn't at all the same.

Goddamn, that is EXACTLY ME, only with Ethiopian food.  Oh, how I long for injera and spicy stews, but all I can think of is that awful goddamn food poisoning.  And I cry a little thinking about the injera.

But having that for Thai food, well, you poor widdle lamb!  The horrors!

I also feel vindicated that I am not the only person who cannot resist the siren song--that clarion call--of Nutella.  Ahg, that's the stuff.  Too bad I can't replace my blood with sweet, sticky Nutella.

Favorite snax, besides Nutella straight from the jar:  tortilla chips with Roberto's salsa from Fort Collins, CO.  I am SO stoked I can get it 70 miles away in Denver <grin>.  fruit.  kosher pickles.  popcorn.  cheddar cheese spread with grape jelly.  olives, especially the garlic-stuffed green ones.  walnuts.  pistachios.  macadamia nuts.  ice cream.

DID YOU KNOW: kosher pickles are kosher, but so are all pickles theoretically?

THE MORE YOU KNOW!
