Seriously, we need more official holidays. I can understand that it would cause a great political commotion to take advantage of all the multitudinous cultures in the US that have holidays we could use. But what would be more old-school English traditional than Boxing Day?

One nice thing at my company is that we have "floating holidays."  We get six regulation holidays (Memorial, Independence, Labor, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years), and then four floating, two in each half of the year.  They're primarily for people who are on client sites, so that when there's a government holiday that's not a company holiday (MLK, Presidents, Veterans, Columbus), they can't complain that we're making them take vacation.  But for those of us in the company office, they're more or less extra vacation days.  Thus you can take any obscure holiday you want.  I didn't take Rohatsu this year, but I have in years past.  I usually declare Opening Day of baseball season to be a holiday as well.

I miss vacations and holidays. Those are two things I'd really like to have (though they're impractical up here). My wife gets all that stuff, plus the bonus days off known as furlough days!

My company says they give us 8 holidays but that's only because they count the day after Thanksgiving separately.

Cort, we actually just call them "Stats"  as in "What are you doing on the Stat?"  or "I'm going to get totally wasted on the Stat."

Manitoba Statutory Holidays.  I was wrong, apparently Boxing day isn't a stat, though it's been about a decade since I worked anywhere where they didn't treat it as such.  We have eight gov't sanctioned holidays, plus two more regular days off Boxing Day and Remembrance Day for 10 total.  Personally I think one a month is ideal.

Pedro gets eleven company holidays, one floating holiday, and unlimited sick leave. He had to take a vacation day for Christmas Eve, but he got this whole week off. He goes back to work Monday.

I, of course, got no time off, because my most reliable client, for whom I write daily product descriptions, is Israeli and doesn't give a rat's ass about Christmas.

Of course they do.  Christmas is a huge money maker for them.

You guys are hilarious.

He did give me a "Christmas bonus" to the tune of a full week's pay, so I really can't complain. All around, he's a good client to have -- he pays promptly and thinks I'm a genius, win-win.

It's interesting, he's quite orthodox, so I have to finish my work for him on Fridays before sundown...he was explaining this to me on the phone and I think he was quite shocked that I went, "oh, of course, because of the Sabbath. No problem." (I guess he figured a Southerner wouldn't know the first thing about Judaism, and I guess outside the larger cities that's probably true.) The only time it was a bit of a trick was when he emailed me the products at 3 PM on Christmas Eve, just as I was heading out to church, and needed them by 4:15 (sundown in NYC).

I managed to throw something together in 30 minutes and still make it to service on time, and he was understanding and gracious about it, but it's the first time our different religious beliefs have come into direct conflict with regards to getting the job done.

That's a tiny can all around, then.

My Canadian ex-it's-complicated says "stat holiday" all the time. It's one of those things she was completely unaware isn't a thing in America. Like how my mom insists that everybody calls a vacuum cleaner the sweeper. I've also never heard anybody but her say "my local"

If someone refered to having a "stat holiday", I would assume that it was some weird term for a subdivision of their personal days that they can take, like, any time they want.

Like even calling in that morning, "I'm taking a stat holiday".

Such as in the medical usage of "stat".
