yesterday, I used the phrase "that gets my goat" and my best friend asserted that she had never heard this phrase before. Is this not common to say?

To get back on the subject of baby names for a moment...

If Gentleman Caller and I end up having a son at some point, there may very well be fisticuffs. I may have mentioned this in the past, but we have two conflicting family naming traditions: my father's line has had "Enrique" as the male middle name for generations, and Gentleman Caller is the third Joseph Ignatius in his line. I realize that a war between "Enrique" and "Ignatius" as middle names is best solved by just giving the kid up for adoption and letting him be named by a sane person, but it's an issue nonetheless.

If given my druthers, my boy name would be Arthur Enrique (after my paternal grandfather). I'm not sure about a girl name.

You could name the girl "Enragius"...

Sort of like the She-Hulk except, like, uhm, in a toga.

...okay, it's late, my imagination's broken.

I wasted it all in my journal riffing on the idea of Davey from Davey and Goliath being brutally gunned-down before he could blow up an abortion clinic because God told him to... dog bein' all "I dunno, Davey" and... yeah. Used it all up there.

All I got left is She-Hulk in a toga. I'll... I'll try to go to sleep now.

on second thought, I would want to give my kid a crazy Hispanic name like my aunt did with my cousins. I have always liked "Ignacio" (which is the name of... a distant cousin? I think?). Horacio,my grandfather's name, is also awesome. He was named after an ocean liner his dad had an affair on.
For a girl, Dejanira (Sp?) which is my mom's middle name. I have always loved the sound of that.

Bizarrely, out of all of my cousins and my own family, the two with "Hispanic" names are the two with "Hispanic" features. This is a coincidence.
Also, apparently the older one has developed a really thick Mexican accent because his babysitter has one.

"mama`! Juwanaeet one?"
"what?"
"juwanaeet one?"
"Do I want to eat one of your cheerios?"
"yeah! juwan one?"
"yes, I would like one."

I find the concept that my family, who for all appearances are an upper-class-ish highly educated white family, has any level of race issues... really interesting.

My friends were shocked when I told them that i checked both "Caucasian" and "Hispanic" on college applications, SATs and such. My mother was shocked and pissed when I said I felt uncomfortable doing so. When they said to only check one, I checked Caucasian because I didn't want to feel like I was tricking them.

Not to mention my grandparents (especially my grandmother) the whole gross obsession with being Light Skinned and not having any (insert crude spanish word for native chilean) blood.
damn, the whole race thing is so fucked up. So weird. So weird. I love how something which is basically a fake concept is so important to so many people.

OK, but, the real question: people with kids, how much do you worry about other people who share your child's name? I find, even when naming characters in games (The Sims!), that i feel strange using the name of someone I know. Because there's always that little bit of "oh, god, not Ben, that Ben guy in Middle School was an idiot" or "oh, no, Erin would think I was naming the kid after her" or what have you.

My great-grandmother hated nicknames. She thought they were crude and disrespectful to the parents who choose the kid's real name for a reason. So she tried to give all of her kids names that couldn't be turned into nicknames and naturally failed miserably. Mainly due to aunts and uncles who would make up nicknames for the kids just out of spite.

My grandfather Lamont was called Duke for his entire life because of one of his aunts. And now I have two cousins who are both named Duke for real. One of his brothers had red hair, so it pretty much didn't matter what crazy name he had because everybody called him Red.

That's funny, because if we have a boy he may be called Red (for his initials), but only if he ends up being blond or brunet.

I love Hispanic names.  My favorite thing is that if you disagree with your spouse, you compromise by just adding names in the middle until everyone's happy.

In Argentina, the tradition is for a woman to have her given name and her middle name followed by her married name, her married name, and her mother's maiden name.  So my sister-in-law is now Maria Graciela Dunston Torres Lexow.  We call her Mariela or Fuji.

my mom has a whole list of names, but it is more due to her family being crazy than due to any cultural thing. Her parents neglected to tell her that the name they called her wasn't her real name, basically.
Until she was 7 or so, she thought her nickname was her real name. so then she started going by her real name.
then at 20 or so she learned that her legal name was something else entirely.

As far as names go, so friggin' boring we are. Adam and Paul, from grand-dads on each side. I'm a big believer in a no frills handle. It's easier to yell.
My parents specifically selected names that would be distinguishable when yelled.  They didn't want to call "Tom" and have "Ron" show up.  So, John, Scott, Neil and Mike.  For kids nowadays, this is probably less of an issue, since parents presumably summon them by texting.

My mother-in-law's name is Graciela Anna.

She was a teenager before she realized it wasn't Cachi, which is the only thing anyone ever called her.  She still goes by Cachi.  It's a gibberish word.  It's like naming your kid Fred and calling him Doodah.

On the other hand, I grew up trying to convince my classmates that yes, Jamie is in fact my whole name, it's not short for anything.

Also, Pedro's family is notorious for nicknames.  He has relatives that go by: Poochie, Dindi, Poopie, Foofie, and Nacho (short for Ignacio, as a matter of fact).  These are just the ones that spring to mind at the moment.  I'm sure there are more.

I don't know if that's an Argentina thing or just a his-family thing.  As kids, the children were Kiki, Lolly, Pookey, and Fuji.  Somehow Danny ended up without a nickname.  I guess because Danny is easier to say than Chris, Adrian, Mariela, or Gabriel.

My mom has the same problem because her full first name is Toni. Telemarketers will often swap my parents genders, too. They think Toni is a man and read Stephen as Stephanie.

My parents go by Bobbie and Gene.  Lots of people hear this and think Dad is Bobby and Mom is Jean.

Adrian and Jamie can go either way, as well.  I've been called Adrienne so many times I just answer to it now.

One time I got assigned to a boy's cabin at sleep-away camp.  Unfortunately, they straightened it out before bed that night.

tonight I am going to give blood. I am saying this on the internet so that I will not chicken out. you can't just take back something you said on the internet.

update: apparently I have weak veins, or no blood, or magic blood, or my superpower is super-clotting, or some shit that leads to them being unable to get blood out of me.

It's

a

BOY!

We think.  His foot was in the way, but the OB got a pretty good glimpse when he kicked, so he's 99% sure.  Just in case, though, he's going to look again next time I have an ultrasound -- probably eight more weeks -- to be sure.

Robert Eugene Dunston.  I'm thrilled -- boys are great, I know how they work.  And we won't have to buy clothes this time around.  Actually, we won't have to buy much of anything this time around -- we saved *everything.*  And my brother is giving us a double stroller that his kids have outgrown.  And P will have a little brother, and I don't have to worry about whether the kids' hair bow matches his socks.  Aaaah, boys: the sweet simplicity of childhood in one convenient package.

I guess we'll have to have at least one more kid, though.

Yeah, that's right.

I'm holding out for a Hero.
