Did you successfully not commit perjury?
I wasnt even given the chance. But someone did ask me how I was doing and I said "good" - which was deffinately a lie.
did you get to do a real-life endless loop where you had to in a big circle to various desks/offices, each one telling you that you're at the wrong one?
Yes, but the different desks were in different buildings which meant I had to walk through siberia to get to them and then get scanned and rescanned by security.

Kelli is a huge Proust fan.

Not buying it.

What? She has a degree in English literature. Of course she loves Marcel.

See, I'm actually a huge fan of bureaucratic governmental nonsense.

It renders everyone as confused and bewildered by the human experience as I am... there is no more pretending that things are easy or sensible when no one has any idea what is going on... and I am put into a lovely centre of calm that off-puts everyone else around me.

At jury duty or in a DMV line, everything is as confused as I am except that everyone else isn't used to it, everyone else has been faking it for years and is now suddenly stumped whereas I... a man who basically can't fake it ever...

I am suddenly a one-eyed man in the land of the blind.

Yay bureaucracy.

the thing that bugs me is how people get so goddamn mad at the people at, say, the DMV, who are just doing their goddamn job. Sorry that you didn't bring the right kind of ID. If you had called or checked on the internet, you would not have made this mistake. It is not the DMV person's fault that you have to provide ID.

this also applies to people who would complain to me about how expensive the burrito I was making them was. Sorry that this burrito is really expensive. Do you know that you can buy tortillas, chicken, cheese, etc. at the grocery store. I did not decide that sour cream would cost 75 cents extra, it just does. It is my job to charge you what the sign says.

Nah. People love Justin Timberlake, maybe. People enjoy Proust - or at the most are moved by him.

And I personally think the most anyone does is stand him.

The best example of horrible bureaucracy that I've ever encountered was when I was working to secure a work visa for a future employee of US citizenship (didn't matter that her husband has Canadian citizenship or that her son is a Canadian citizen).  After we were officially approved to have a permit issued for her (weeks of paperwork) I went to the government site the approval letter directed me to - it said I needed to fill out a form, to write a letter on company letterhead explaining why we were hiring someone from outside Canada, and a to provide information on how we had sought out hiring for the position and why we were unable to find a Canadian for the job, to give it to our future employee and have her drive to the border with her US birth certificate.  I put all this together, but the form I needed to fill out referred to other information that was required that the site itself didn't mention, so I put this all together too, but then I also called the border office where the future employee was going, and they told me she needed totally different information and a different form, and that the future employee needed to bring several additional articles of identification not mentioned on the site or form at all.  So I put all this info together, and got her to get all her ID together, but the day before I sent her on the drive to the border I called the border again and talked to another agent, who told me I needed another type of letter written, containing specific information not mentioned by anyone previous or the website, along with one or two of the other pieces of information I'd already been told about, but that my future employee only needed her birth certificate, not the other articles, when I told this person that I had been told otherwise they said that person had been wrong.  I was pretty doubtful that she would be successful in actually obtaining her work permit at the border since I had not made a single contact that didn't conflict with the previous information or a single contact where I hadn't been told I needed to provide yet another never-before-heard-of piece of information.  On a lark, I sent her with the original letter of approval I'd received (everyone I had asked said she wouldn't need this letter, but it said right on it that it "must be presented" when the future employee went to pick up her work visa, along with every single form and letter anyone had ever told me she would need, and I basically told her to bring every piece of ID she had, and to call at the border herself before she went down to make sure she didn't need anything else.  She called them right away and then called me laughing to tell me that they told her she needed yet another sort of letter from our company detailing different information none of the other contacts or the site had mentioned, plus personal ID info of her own no one ever mentioned to me.   She called them one more time and they told her she needed different stuff, all of which was already included in the massive (but carefully filed and labelled) pile of papers one agent or another told us she needed - she got this agents name and their assurance that they would be working the next day when she would drive to the border to get this done.  The next day she drove to the border, she brought every scrap of paper, and they did indeed need the original copy of the approval letter that everyone told me wasn't necessary, plus some of the paperwork I'd put together and some info of hers no one had told her or I she needed (her marriage license), but thankfully after the whole experience I had warned her to bring every piece of ID with her.

We were all sort of holding our breath for the next little while that it would be okay because the initial work visa is a temporary one, but and thankfully she got the full work visa and has since begun the process of gaining citizenship.

I went out and got the pimpest red Kenneth Cole shoes today. They are sick. Also, I got some crazy Robert Waynes, too. I guess I should have posted this earlier and said I was gonna do it, but I didn't know until I got there. Also, we got a 10 quart stockpot for split pea soup and like that.

Those a great shoes.  Fine.  So fine.  I had a pair of Kenneth Cole strappy sandals that gave me about six inches of extra height and had a handsome boy tell me I looked like Wonder Woman before she left the island when I wore them.

So.

I would like to think, mel, that coming into the US is just walking over the border, to be greeted by a Good Ol' Boy. "Well hi there! Welcome to the United States of America *slaps on back*"

I guess then he would hire you at minimum wage to work in his factory, but, I will not think about that part right now.

...finally be called back by the garage where my car was having its oil changed and being inspected. Apparently my brakes were almost gone? They said they were 90% worn down, and I don't know how long that last 10% was supposed to last, but I am still a little weirded out. They said they heard grinding, which I certainly didn't notice. I think I did one time, and my dad said not to worry about it unless it happened all the time.
Meanwhile, I am going on a road trip to asheville for the day with my best friend and his girlfriend. Um, he kind of invited her along, I thought it was going to be just us, but she is a girl I have known since 4th grade so I guess it should be OK. I made a 200 song playlist for the drive up and back. We don't know what we will do there, but, it will be cold, and hopefully fun.

Today I'm gonna wonder why January in San Francisco is suddenly hurricane season. Pouring rain and 65 mph winds? Isn't this supposed to be sunny California?

I've been at work for an hour now and my ##### are still soaking wet.

I like going down to giraffeerman's Wharf or Pier 39 and watching blue tourists snatching overpriced fleece sweatshirts off the racks at souvenir shops.  The vendors like it too.  There's something about cold, windy, and Pacific Ocean damp that makes even a Minnesotan shiver.  Coldest damn place in the lower 48 has to be the windward side of Alcatraz island.  The concrete and rusted iron sucks the life right out of you.
