So, at least for the time being I live on a small, green island that is considered a tourist destination because it is beautiful.

There is no curbside recycling.
The sewer infrastructure spills raw effluent into the ocean when it rains.
There is no special waste disposal for household chemicals.
The worst litterers / polluters are local people.

It's an interesting question philosophically, in the end, rational self-interest in the short term always wins out over individual long-term altruism. Sadly.

Someone needs to make it worthwhile for everyone to do something outside their immediate self-interest before they will do it.

Sad but true.

I was born and partly raised in Hawaii. You forget the part about methamphetamines and beating up white people.

Although the environment there won't tolerate abuse forever, Hawaii does have the virtue of a relatively low population density.

I'm not too terribly surprised they don't have curbside recycling. We didn't have it in Alaska, even in Anchorage. Oh man do I love me some curbside recycling. Between that and the compost tumbler, we rarely generate anything that goes to the landfill. And this year they are increasing the kinds of plastic they take! Also, we just got our cats a toilet, so that removes our main source of non-recyclable garbage. Of course, we don't have kids, so we have less waste to begin with.

Today I'm gonna finally upgrade my paltry 1 gig of RAM to 3*. I know I have to install the sticks in pairs, but does anybody know if it matters if I put the 512MB sticks in the 0 slots and the 1GB sticks in the 1 slots or vice versa?

I'm also finally going to get around to setting up the 750GB external HD I got for Christmas. It's eSATA an my motherboard pre-dates that, so I have to install an extension cord from my last free SATA port to a slot in the back. I should probably dust while I'm in there.

Oh, and our new printer. We got an HP with built in networking but I was plumb out of Cat5 and Cat6 so I had to order some from New Egg. The Apple store had some when I was there the other day, but they were charging 1,500% more than New Egg, (down to 400% more when you including shipping). Unfortunately I had to wait a week for it to arrive.

*My system will hold 4GB but of course Windows sucks and can't see more than 3.

And I want to have make outs with karl marx.

You know, I quite nearly pre-retorted for my convenience in my post? But I refrained, knowing you would come up with a retort of this level of lameness.

I'm going to keep it quoted because it's funnier out of context. Give into your inner socialisthomosexuality, A-CAP!

... anyway, today I'm gonna attempt to write a Choose Your Own Adventure, basically just for fun and a challenge. This shit is complicated, though.

It isn't going to be one of those CYOAs, though, is it?

Wow - please, seriously, let me know if that thing works for you.  It looks great, but the negative reviews are pretty negative, but statistically most folks seem to be happy, so, yeah.

I put a 2 gig stick in one slot and have a 512 in the other.  Apple says not to do it, and you lose a little functunality, but it is much faster than the one gig alone.  Just search "unequal ram in (computer model/make)"

Also, I was just reading this thing the other day that said if you live in a coastal area not to flush cat shit.  Apparently it has a chemical that is harmful to seals.  Don't know if Portland counts?

Links:  yesterday I found benchmark tests, today I can only find this:   http://newsgroups.derkeiler.com/Archive/Comp/comp.sys.mac.system/2007-10/msg02853.html

seal thing:  can't find it, I think it was on slate if that helps?

Apparently with my motherboard matching pairs aren't just "recommended" they're "required." Stupid Intel. And I have 2 sticks each of 512MB and 1GB, so not installing them in pairs would be silly.
