Sorry to hear that Ash, hope you and yours get through it. Might not be my place to say but I reckon a guy like that would tell you not to spend too much time fretting on him when there's so much life to live.

Completely different thought track: I just saw Taken tonight and gods-damn that's a hell of a movie. Who knew Liam Neeson was an action star? The whole 'never ever leave the USA or you will die' theme was a bit off-putting but thankfully most of the talking stopped about half an hour in.

Uh, anybody who saw Darkman?

Yeah I kind of realised how odd that sounded that after I posted. I mean he's been in a bunch of action movies but this one had a really brutal quality I didn't expect. The comparison to the Bourne movies are pretty apt.

...cry a few real tears.

The man who taught me how to chew Red Man, giraffe on a lake at night and took me to the police range so we could shoot shotguns and pistols passed away after a long fight with brain cancer. One time in Idaho he woke us up in our tent in the early morning and snuck me and his sons out to the creek so we could see our first real live beaver.

These people in my life and these endings are why I pray and believe.

Ash, I feel for you. My dad just lost his fight with brain cancer. It was a tough road. I can't say too much here, now but suffice it to say that all the relationships between all the members of my family are 'complicated' and to some degree that's part of Dad's legacy too. But he didn't really deserve to go the way he went, and I believe he's in for good things. There was more good than bad, even if some members of my family can't and won't see that. Blessings on your friends life, as he apparently blessed yours.

Today I'm gonna wake up early, all packed and ready to leave town, walk around shopping with the pugs while the Technical Staff takes a hike, and stay a night in a nice hotel. Only to have him say he didn't get any sleep and was coming down with a migraine.

On the bright side, no charge for canceling the hotel before noon.

Move into our HELL OF AWESOME apartment. Find out that despite what they told us, the furniture that comes with it is nicer than what was in our dorm-- which is a plus. Except that the bed is a full size instead of a twin, so I have to buy all new sheets. My roommate mentioned drinking, parties to be held at our apartment, drinking, and vaguely referred to fuck*ng in front of my mom. He tells me I should have warned him if it wasn't OK to mention drinking. Do other people talk to their parents about these things? Weird. We went to an Indian restaurant where my mom made me embarrassed, and then I felt like a dick for being embarrassed by my mom. We bought a ton of stuff, but we are still missing basic things like lamps and shelves and food. My room has a beautiful view of the alley, trash cans, and the building behind ours.

So far our best buy has been a George Foreman grill. We will make Paninis on it.

Oh, also, we went to my friend's house to get my stuff from his basement, and the kitchen counter was entirely covered in bottles of alcohol. That was cute for my mom to see.

edit: I know that my mom knows that alcohol exists, and knows that college kids drink. I just feel weird about this stuff.

Does your mom think that you don't drink?  Does she drink?  Does your Dad?  When did they start drinking?  In college?

Drinking age synching up with school leaving age is terribly convenient, gotta say.

they started drinking in college. when the drinking age was 18.

They don't drink now. Maybe once in a while my dad will have a beer if a friend comes over, or my mom will have a margarita if we go to a mexican restaurant. that is all.
And again, I realize that my parents drink, and have drank, and should know that I drink if only by logic. But I am still weirded out by it.

a little note to brighten your day:
HOLY HELL that is a window in our shower. Looking right out into the courtyard/street. It was not a big problem for my roommate, because I am taller than him. Not by a ton-- in fact, I am exactly the amount you would need to be taller for this window to be a problem.
I hung my towel up over it, and halfway into the shower it fell off, so I was flailing around for the whole street to enjoy.
Also the dang shower has more water pressure than is prudent. Like, places where I have cuts are burning right now because the shower basically re-opened them. Also you can't turn the water off all the way, which is probably related.

Now: breakfast, shopping, etc.

If you act embarrassed or ashamed about alcohol, people can conclude that you have are reason to be ashamed and embarrassed about it. A dude who does not abuse alcohol can have a full bar set up for his parents to see and not think twice about it, but people who are, say, alcoholics, tend to hide their alcohol and any evidence of their drinking. Your mom would be rightly concerned to find bottles of alcohol hidden in your drawers, but shouldn't have to worry about the revelation that yes, college age dudes have alcohol.
At Sydney, drinking with parents when they come down seems to be the norm, rather than the exception. I had concluded that this was a Southern thing, but maybe not, since you're from NC.
I hung my towel up over it, and halfway into the shower it fell off, so I was flailing around for the whole street to enjoy.
The solution here is a new invention called curtains. they make them for shower windows.

Awesome. I want a window in my shower. Just standing there, looking down on people walking by, big smile on my face.

tI, does your bathroom have a fan? In a lot of places zoning law require bathrooms have to have either a fan or a window. And for some reason they always put the window in the shower. I don't know if that's actually required or just common.

In my apartment building we have a lot of 2 bedroom + 1 "den" units, because they can't call the den a bedroom since there there's no window.

Yeah, drinking was definitely the norm here.  Ever since about half way through the last year of high school, with parents buying me alcohol starting when I was 19 at chirstmas, which would be my second year of college.  I had gotten drunk a few times around them before, at like family parties or if I would have people over for July 4th or something.  They were actually some of the most uptight parents I knew about (this is even after they were buying me alcohol) too, but the whole secret drug arrest/ possible trouble that never happened seriously helped our relationship.  It was weird.
