Where are all these women who are unironically impressed by the banjo?

When did I miss this?

(My step-grandfather is a master of the button-box accordion.)

um, probably they are more likely to live where I live, in North Carolina, than where you live/have lived, in upstate NY and Los Angeles.

But also I think there is a resurgence, in indie type music at least, of the banjo as an instrument that people like.

It is hell of on the upswing.

Also, I just read that this year has had the highest Record (LP, vinyl, not-CD) sales in 20 years.

...wonder why I can read the parts of this site that don't exist but can't post in the parts of this site that don't exist.

I've had this trouble before but I think it was fixed for a while.

Catch up on 3 days worth of internet after my trip to NY. Way too much stuff happened, considering it was a weekend.

...get a message from these lovely ladies that they'd gotten calendar orders from people who'd read my story about them in Sweden, Australia, Israel and France. And try to feel like a writer of worldwide power and influence instead of a loser who can't get a book published.

for the first time I can remember, I put something on and my mom said "OH! this is really good! Who is this?"
Right at the moment of the song that I love, too.

Avett Brothers FTW!

I just looked at their myspace page.  Loved the music.  I see they are playing here in Houston soon.  Aw wait hell no, they are opening up for Dave Mathews.

...hear on the news that a high school classmate was just named Solicitor General. And wonder if this is something important. Sounds to me like yet another person who sits in an office in DC and sends their kids to private school and thinks they are so important that they drive fast and cut you off and talk on the cell phone while driving, but not so important that they block up the streets with secret service when they go out to dinner.

they are absolutely wonderful, I am kind of obsessed with them right now.

I would list favorite songs, but it is... a really large number of songs.

I am pretty upset that they are playing with Dave Matthews.

...walk into my boss's office, sit down, and say, "I think I want out." Work has been stressing me out lately. Not wow-can-you-believe-this-work stress, more like sleeping all weekend and not being able to get out of bed stress. Nausea every morning on the way to work stress. That sort of thing.

So I'm volunteering to go back to basically front-line status (which, to be fair, I was only one, maybe one-and-a-half levels above anyway), so I can focus my mental energy on getting my finances in order and being normal when the baby gets here. It may result in a pay cut, though the boss is going to try to work something out for me, but I had told people I'd rather work 50 hours a week on the line than 40 hours where I am now.

I felt like my posture was better when I left her office, a signal that I'd gotten a huge weight off of my shoulders. I've never bought into the phrase "There are more important things in life than money" more than I do tonight.

The Solicitor General is the lawyer that argues for the Federal government in the Supreme Court.

That's a whole job just doing that? Doesn't the Supreme Court hear hardly any cases and take hugely long breaks? Oh well, nice work if you can get it.

Apparently this woman is always mentioned when people in the know discuss possible female candidates for the next Supreme Court opening. This completely freaks me out. I guess that the people who run the country have to be someone's high school classmates, but it is just too weird.

Geez, it was hard enough finding out that one of my younger sister's classmates posed for Playboy and another was an American Idol finalist.

Wombat--are DC government officials really assholes to that degree?
