this guy seemed really into just mumbling and then saying AMEN really loudly.

also: kneeling on a floor is just as uncomfortable as I should have expected, but more uncomfortable than I did expect.

and finally: my cousin, who I think is now my favorite relative, told us a story where the same priest compared her to a Nazi when planning her wedding.

today, I have achieved a goal that I have had for a while.
There is now at least one person on earth who, when he hears my name, thinks "dan (lastname)? That kid is an asshole."
I have decided that if at least one person doesn't think I'm an asshole, I'm doing something wrong.

Today I found out that another of my friends from High School turned into a dumbass. That makes four so far, and those are just the ones I know about.

visiting Boston made me realize that the reason my dad is so big on hard work is that... everyone he knows from his childhood, barring a very select few, has turned into a dumbass/loser. Unhappy, trapped in shitty jobs, family problems, alcohol problems, etc. Lots of "he was smart and then he dropped out of college and..." stories.

I mean, I knew this, but the extent of it, hearing the story of each person I met while I was there drove it home a little more.

This unpleasant asshole who I have decided to be an asshole to is bringing out the big guns.

"you're trapped in an obscurity-obsessed pseudo-world"
"you need to stop reading hipster runoff and go into the real world" (thanks a lot, philosophy major)
"this isn't like music where it's cool to have a different opinion just for the hell of it"

also he likes the idea that I am some sort of bleeding-heart post-modernist guy who doesn't believe in facts or truth or objectivity.

note: the argument we are engaged in has nothing to do with music, or being a "hipster," or postmodernism.

So what was it about?

Also, up the ante and start meta-arguing. Tell him he is obsessing on you as being a hipster and that is biasing his viewpoint, accuse him of making ad hominem attacks and so on. With any luck he'll start twisting around trying to say he doesn't think you're a hipster but your arguments are like hipster blah blah blah.

When I lived in Oklahoma (suburbs) my window didn't have a screen and I would just piss out into the front yard.  See I sleep naked, but you don't want to see your roommate as he is waking up and you are going to bed and you are naked.  So it is either put on ##### or piss out the window.  I'll take the window every time.  Basically I am used to not pissing in toilets and it doesn't bug me.  I had a friend who would piss into like paper/ that cheap ass plastic fast food cups then just leave them on his nightstand for weeks.  That was pretty fucked I guess, but as long as there is a lid (a lid that screws on) it is alright with me.

Also, I throw my piss bottles out after every use.  That other guy didn't.

You know when dogs look all happy rolling on their backs in the yard all smiling like the dickens?  Something died there recently and they are trying to convince other dogs they kilt it.

And I didn't think you were knocking me.  If there is anyone on this board who would be cool with this it is you.  I am from the country, and you like it, so we got that going for us I guess.

It did kind of seem like some people thought I was mad at my roommate.  Not the case.  He is a lot happier when getting laid (who wouldn't be) so it is a good thing.

last summer when I worked at camp, I remember one fun night where it didn't occur to us for a few hours that we were drinking in a HOUSE, and so probably didn't need to pee in the backyard.

We did anyway, though.

doc-- I tried that and he basically ignored it.

the argument is about the following: he said "poor people are drug dealers because they are stupid."
When I called him an asshole, he claimed that I should have known he actually meant something like "poor people's brain development is hurt by their lack of access to education through no fault of their own, which leads to a decreased decision-making capability, resulting in choosing to deal drugs." Which I still don't agree with. It is interesting to me how this guy (now a guy and his also-smart lady friend) are buying into a lot of fallacies they should have learned about in Psych 101. Maybe they took it too long ago and their brains are rotted by too much neuroscience and philosophy at this point.

new gem: "if they were smart, they would have other options. that is how being smart works."
Part of the issue is that for this guy, part of being smart is "having a college degree."
Because he's an asshole who doesn't make distinctions between intellect and education.

I am realizing now that what I should have said is, "I disagree with you because I'm smart" and acted surprised when he took that the wrong way.

And I care what he thinks for... genetic reasons? I don't know. I think he might be smarter than me, but that doesn't really explain anything.

Yeah, most of the drug dealers I've known or known of generally dealt so as to afford drugs for themselves.

Only my personal experience, of course.

Most people I know who deal tend to be doing ok, certainly they tend to come from fairly decent SES backgrounds.
Actually now I think of it most of them were IT geeks too.

My roommate who sold weed comes from a family who owns a personal helicopter that he took to high school occasionally.

Also he played a shit load of computer games, but was also cool in like a traditional way.  Also, didn't do any other drugs except for coke and shrooms like once a month tops, though he was addicted to meth in high school, long before I knew him.

Also, they deal drugs because drugs are awesome and as such they have a demand and someone has to supply.

You should just tell him to watch the first season of the Wire or just find some great David Simon article and steal his points to make this guy look like a fool.  This guy sounds like the hugest tool ever though.  I have a college degree and it is almost impossible to find a job.  I can't imagine some 18 year old on his/her own after high school trying to make it right now.  Mainly due to over educated greedy douches from the ivy league who have been fuck*ng us since Reagan.  Clinton, with time, seems more and more guilty (of selling our country to corporations and foreign countries who do better the worse we do, and the drug war, as an aside) everyday.  Doesn't college just teach you how to process information?  Especially something like philosophy.  I mean, the actual facts/ info isn't important, it is learning to think.  This guy seems like he missed that part.

Also, today I realized that the Rolling Stones were fuck*ng amazing before Brian Jones died.  Especially Between the Buttons (UK version, don't know even if there is a US version, but it said (UK) after it automatically in iTunes, so I can assume.  It is probably good too, but I cannot speak for it.)
