I conclude that the best way to get the economy moving again would be to make sure that everything is crap so people are having to buy new stuff all the time. I'm sure there's something wrong with this idea, but I can't put my finger on it.

Wasn't that basically the American auto industry's business plan for like the past 40 years or so?  How's that working out for them?

No it is a private torrent site.  The site was made after another site, called oink, was shut down.  There is another one called what, oink basically became those two places from what I understand.  Oink was the most amazing site of all time.  Anything you could think of (nearly) could be downloaded in the time it would take you to get to the closest music store and back.  I would have had every Beatles album in mono within 15 minutes, probably.

I see. Thanks.

So it's like the 21st century digital analog of a speakeasy? All like, "What's the password?" "Tom sent me." Because that would be awesome.

"Digital analog" was such a pun, and one of which I am not ashamed.

today, my dad said things to me in the vein of things asherdan said the other day... in re: "you're not the one we worry about." It was kind of nice to hear that they know I will do good things with myself. But makes me unhappy to be clued into how horrible my brother's year is going. He seems to be a very unhappy person right now. It is not clear what is to be done, as he is not open to talking about things the way I am.

Yesterday my mom offered me wine at dinner and said "you need to try alcohol before you go to Paris." My brother and sister joined me in laughing really hard. Family Togetherness!

also: there is a family tradition where we mispronounce "Cake" to have a long A. It is one of those "wasn't it cute when daniel was a baby and couldn't pronounce "Cake"" type of jokes.
My sister has realized, and I am not sure how I did not realize, that it sounds like "COCK."
My parents have not noticed this over the last 20 years, and walk around screaming "I WANT COCK! I WANT COCK!"
Fucked up.

Or maybe they're just bisexual swingers and wanted you to figure it out without ever quite directly telling you?

Wasn't that basically the American auto industry's business plan for like the past 40 years or so?  How's that working out for them?

Same with Apple (don't get me wrong, I've loved my iPods, but still), most cell phone providers/manufacturers, Dell, TV makers... Pretty much I have had 4 products my entire life that were sturdy and well-built, functional and attractive: a GE alarm clock radio I've had for at the very least two decades (which really is kind of ugly, but functional and all that), a JVC stereo I bought like 12 years ago and still use, a 1989 Honda Accord and a 2002 Honda Civic -- my current vehicle, which has had its share of problems but it's still going strong and I drive it a lot. Also most problems are due to things beyond my and Honda's control.

Speaking of, I rented a car to drive to St. George, UT this weekend and pretty much got fucked by everyone I came into contact with at Enterprise. Basically I'd be haggling over $20 to $25, but it's the principle, right? Also, it's the $20 to $25. In fact I am really fuck*ng pissed, because I was basically lied to, and I assume it was because the dickwad who checked me in profited from it. I'm deciding whether I should drop it, calmly but assertively escalate it to someone who can and is willing to work with me, or raise hell.

Related to the situation there, if you didn't catch the live broadcast of the This American Life program "Return to the Scene of the Crime" beamed to your local theater a few weeks back or hear the radio rebroadcast soon after, Mike Birbiglia tells a wonderful and infuriating story about a situation that of course makes mine look like peanuts, if there was any doubt. It's the first act of the program (after the prologue). I can't decide whether the conclusion of the story inspires respect for the man or disappointment. Whatever your thoughts are of the outcome, he is an engaging storyteller and it's worth the short time it takes. Dan Savage's contribution is, of course, brilliant. As is Starlee Kine's, although I can't tell if that was part of the rebroadcast. It would be better on screen because she is adorable.

Lastly, the great Onion piece lampooning TAL. Ira Glass talked about it somewhere -- maybe here: this episode, and admitted that it kind of stung, though it may have been somewhere else. One thing I like about Ira is that he obviously thinks a lot of himself, and can be candid about how he feels when he's criticized or mocked. TAL is a huge part of his life's work and is what he'll be remembered for, and while he's not above self-deprecation, he's also kind of sensitive and not afraid to admit it. It you listen to the TAL act on the Onion, am I the only one that compiles, mentally and sometimes written down, potential Onion headlines?

Oh, and to stay on topic, what did I do today? I saw Flight of the Conchords in Vegas last night (meh, if I hadn't been drunk enough) and then declined a ride back to St. George (where my rental car and all my shit was) because even though I'm fat and turning 30 and can and will party till 5 AM, and walked at least 6 miles all along the Strip losing more money and getting drunker and propositioned by some hookers, and one of those guys that give out those cards with naked ladies on them asked if I wanted to see a  ... DONKEY SHOW! what the fuck, got foot blisters, fucked up my knees, took a cab to the airport and a shuttle to St. George. And of course, on 3 hours sleep and still probably a bit drunk, drove to SLC to return my rental car to the dickwads at Enterprise. I'm not complaining, because all of these problems are mostly due to me being a dumbfuck. I'm just venting.

wow, yeah.

People who hate on This American Life are no good. My roommate is one, which brings out tensions.

It didn't help that the episode I was listening to at the time was pretty shitty.

It makes me cry regularly, so like, fuck you man. (not anyone in particular at this moment, but goddamn.)
(here was a rant about my friend's girlfriend, who is a hater with a shitty superior attitude. She has single-handedly ruined "Daria" for me by making me realize that people like that are horrible to be around.)

I just saw In Bruges, it was pretty enjoyable. Maybe because lately I want to punch people in the face a lot of the time.

Which makes me want to make a joke where I have an acronym for "Sorry to want to punch you." Did you guys see this gem? I like that 15 is blank. And of course, NALOPKT.

Maybe I need to master these acronyms to be successful with the young ladies I meet.

Some of that language seems pretty explicit for a network news affiliate's website.

So today's XKCD (http://xkcd.com/588/) made me think about high school. In high school, I hung out with the popular kids and the unpopular kids, but it wasn't until today that I realized that they didn't hang out with each other. It took me two years to notice that.

(Also, in the above comic, I sympathize with the cheerleader.)

I was liked but not well-liked. The Willy Loman of mighty Mountie country.

Tolerated by most and didn't get laid until well into college.

In my grade the popular kids were simultaneously intelligent, sporty and friendly to everyone so we all just kind of fell in line behind them and everyone was more or less cool with everyone else with only a few exceptions. Most of the people who ended up alienated really made an effort to get there. I wonder if it was because it was an all boys school? No sexual tension bullshit.
Well, not much.
