I remember when I was a kid that Coors was a big thing, a new thing.  It was the hot fad beer back in the early 70s.  And it was exotic because you couldn't get it east of Texas.  Shit they even made a movie about it Smokey and the Bandit about smuggling the shit to Georgia.

This all took place several years before I came to drinking age and if one didn't know better they might believe that Coors was something really special.

I guess I forgot all that until a couple of years ago when I saw a blog post or something about Smokey and the Bandit and it brought all those memories back to the fore.  I may have done a double take.  Wait, wait wait... that was COORS they were making all the fuss about.

I told you that story to tell you this one.

I was in Newcastle in the 90s and Newcastle Brown Ale is a popular beer.  Why is it popular?  Simple, because it's the cheapest local swill you can buy.  It's what you buy when you can't afford a good import like Budweiser or even one of the decent national brands like Tetley's.  In other words it's England's version of Old Milwaukee or Carlings Black Label maybe.

Not long ago I saw Newcastle Brown for sale in Whole Foods Market in a special display for $18 for a six pack.

One of my uncles is always going on about how rad Coors is.  I remember when I turned 21 I went out of my way to pick up a six-pack of it to see what the fuss was about.  I cracked that can, took a sip - took another one just to be sure I wasn't missing something and decided that he must have been going off nostalgia or memories of what it once tasted like, because the 1990 version of that beer was swill.

Ash, I'm like you.  When I was a drinker I would drink it if it were on hand, but that didn't mean I liked it.  My recollection of Coors was that it was really one of the worst tasting beers I ever had.  Maybe Shaeffer was worse.

i almost never partake of alcohol, but as far as beer goes, ill drink whatever you got, especially if im not paying for it.  honestly, i like bitch beer.  make mine miller light, or that smirnoff kool-aid beer(the only downside is that it has so much sugar that it makes me full after like, 2....).

honestly, once i got my buzz started, i like to switch to shots.  wild turkey.  cuervo.  red-headed slut(i would LOVE to drink a cocktail version of this!)

I used to be a hard liquor only guy.  Occasionally I would step into the world of beers, but it would have to be something stout, or high-fah-lutin'.

Living in Portland, we have roughly 600 microbrews available here.  The beer aisle is filled with tough choices.  Grown men weep.

My ladyfriend got me into drinking Miller Lite, and PBR.   (The look Nabubrush gave me when I dared bring a 6 pack of Miller Lites into his home... I think he would have preferred I pee on his floor or set something on fire.)  Honestly though, I'm coming to it, domestic beer ... I can drink a few of them and have a nice time.  They taste decent enough and I don't get dummydrunk on a pint and a half, like some of the more potent microbrews.

Lately I've been really digging the Belgian Style Wheat that Henry Weinhard has been bottling.

Ain't no reason to be stuffy about domestics, people.

I quit drinking before the micro brew revolution took off.  There's a lot of microbrew available here in Houston now.  One micro St. Arnold's has grown into a local favorite.  You can get it in most bars and many stores.

I've never tasted it myself, but I know it's good.  It must be, they have an artcar.

at Berkeley I got really into Sierra Nevada, but the other day I drank some and didn't like it.

I like beers with "wheat" in the title. Those are good.

a lot of my friends are into the IPA thing. Sometimes that is good.

I talked to a guy at a concert here in Salt Lake who is originally from Newcastle and was talking to me about the brewery. Now, I love beer (and our mutual love of beer had been established), but I really don't care much for Newcastle, but to be nice I was all "well that would have been nice to be right there" and he said something like "no Newcastle sucks and where my residence was I could smell it all the time and it smells like ass." And yeah, stores like Whole Foods are always looking for ways to gouge novice beer snobs. I have no problem spending a lot on beer, in fact I have two Rochefort 10s waiting for me when I feel like have been eating healthily long enough to reward myself with them, and the two alone cost roughly $12, but $3 for a bottle of Newcastle at a store? Criminal. I think the bars here in town charge $4.

You spoke my mind. Specifically, high life with cheap but delicious chinese food, and I'm in heaven.

at Berkeley I got really into Sierra Nevada, but the other day I drank some and didn't like it.

There are three pale ales that are now pretty readily available in Utah (and out west, where I do most of my travelling) that are my standbys. Sierra Nevada, which I can always rely on, Full Sail Pale, a bit harder to come by, and Mirror Pond. Also, Utah has some really decent microbrews now and one really kickass IPA.

Sorry about this whole beer rambling, but I love it, and I haven't had one for closing in on 3 weeks. The whole losing weight thing. It helps to talk about it.

Pretty funny.  There's an old Monty Python sketch where Michael Palin rants about "bleedin' Watney's Red Barrel."  I think Watney's Red Barrel is pretty good, actually, because I'm an American who has to drink shitty beer much of the time.

When I was in Germany many years ago, I got a takeout pizza and a can of Hansastadt Pils, which was just about the only time I saw beer in a can in Germany (aside from the big-ass cans of Faxe, a Danish beer).  The Germans I was with saw it and said "Don't drink that, it's the worst beer in all of Germany."  I drank it anyway, and said "Yeah, tastes like pretty much every American beer."

Also:  I heart Anderson Valley Brewing Company.  Just to forestall anyone saying "You realize there are good beers to be had in the States, right?"
