Today I'm gonna realize I was an idiot to stay overnight in a house with no electricity and no heat when it's 20 degrees out, and call a hotel.

I had to make two trips because the pugs had to be carried half the way the way in the middle of the street for three blocks. Fortunately there was no traffic at 9 am. Now I'm waiting and hoping the hotel shovels the sidewalk instead of just the driveway so I can get back to feed the cats and get some more stuff, and somehow acquire some food.

Did I mention the Tech Staff is out of town, waiting for a rescheduled flight on Tuesday, and just called and said, oh, the people he's staying with are making a nice hot breakfast.

I have heat, light, hot tea, and running water (no water at home, drained the pipes so they wouldn't freeze), but I am still kind of annoyed that I have to plug into the wall to get internet instead of it being wireless.  Also, why is everything except Gmail working? Is it down, or is it possible I can't get to it from this connection? Which is really a problem.

Gmail had been wonky for me for the past few work days but has been working fine yesterday and today.

So Technical Staff is planning to fly in on the day where we're supposed to get like 6 more inches of snow? Excellent.

Yeah, on the other hand, who knows if we will have power by then, so he might as well stay in some other state entirely I guess.

I just tried Gmail somewhere else and it works fine. OK, but, I have heat and light and got to take a shower, I shouldn't complain about not having email.

...ride around Baltimore in a friend's SUV and be amazed at the lack of snow removal. The 4 main north and south roads have been plowed, but only a single lane. The side streets haven't been touched. Yesterday I shoveled a four car parking lot and also an entire alley in order to get my car out, but there is no where on the street to put it. Tomorrow morning when I am forced to move my car I will have to find an available space and shovel that shit out.

I really do love this weather though, and it is amazing seeing the entire city disrupted like this. I've had heat, power, booze, pot and good friends so I consider myself very lucky. I hope you get your utilities back soon, Wombat!

I am trying so hard not to complain but... the hotel does not have the channel for Puppy Bowl. Why does hotel TV suck so much?

It's just amazing how much... you know... the effect of weather differs depending on how used to it the place is.

Where I grew up, that storm wouldn't have even cancelled school but where I'm from a significant amount of the city budget is tied up in snowplowing and salting and so on.

And out here, if there's a drizzle, people forget how to drive.

The city snow removal budget was empty before this storm even hit. If you drive to the northern city/county line you don't need a sign to tell you where one ends and the other begins. Also, the smaller snow plows aren't able to plow the side streets because there is too much snow for them to handle. The larger trucks can't fit down the streets without destroying cars. I have a feeling the city is going to be clogged for some time, especially if we get the additional snow they are predicting for this weekend.

Wombat: is there a nearby bar where you could use your feminine wiles to request a channel change during halftime?

Oh if only I had thought of that earlier - Puppy Bowl starts at 3 so it wouldn't even have been competing with that other bowl.

...try to clean up my apartment. A Comcast guy came by offering me some promo deal on cable and internet, and I chatted with him because I've actually been considering getting cable. He asked if he could come in and I said no. I told him I had a friend over who was sleeping, but really it was just because my place is a fuck*ng dump and I'm too embarrassed.

All in all, you're better for not having Comcast.  Thank your lucky stars.

as soon as i can get on google's fiber though i'm ditching comcast and turning my old directv dvr into a freevo with wifi

... remember how much I hate applying for rental properties.

Ok, you need a contact for my work, and my uni and two references, ok my current place of residence, my previous place of residence, my grandmother's maiden name, the rate of change of my bank balance using a given pre-gregorian calendar as valued against the fictional currency of my choosing. Maybe being homeless wouldn't be so bad, y'know?
