I'm trying to help one of our Russian consultants today. But I got no sleep at all last night and can't focus or think straight. Can somebody here please help me out?

I am looking for a book that describes way of living in America in XIX century. I mean not official history of way, politics, and not fiction, but real stories about how roads and sidewalks looked like, which bakeries were famous and for what, how people behaved, etc.

Of course, I read John Steinbeck and I liked his novels, but it is more fiction that description of way of living itself and, of course, there is not much of dark side of life and every day problems with unfair cops, dirty streets, etc.

I do not know such a book and I do not think it is possible to find outside US. Since America is very diverse and such a book describes local way of living (in NYC, in Wild West, in Chicago, etc.), there should be several books. Can you please help me with the name and author of at least one book?

Today my friends' lives changed, because a new life was added to their family.  Happy birthday, Kaelynn.

this seems like an achewood concept.

I am so sick of the feeling where I don't sleep enough, and wake up feeling all pukey. ugh.

set my alarm for 6 AM, kept hitting snooze until i finally reset it... now I am waking up at 11:30?
oops. Sorry paper, you are going to be very poorly written.

for the last few days this thing is going on where I have been eating a normal amount of meals, but I feel starving at all times. It is really unpleasant.

I think my life plan is now to marry an older woman with a high-powered career immediately, and be a kept man.

Today I am asking out a girl that I didn't meet on a dating site. It's very strange and new.

So she said yes. We worked out a time and place. Then today she revealed she had no idea this was a date. She's in a LTR with a mutual friend. Two of my female friends, one of which spent about 5 hours with me and this girl and her boyfriend last week both confirmed that she's totally into me and this guy is just her friend.

Without going into a 12 page rant Elsewhere: the past 24 hours have been one long kick in the balls.

that sucks. being kicked in the balls is really bad. ugh. sorry man.

Aug, do you remember any of the people who came for WILD when you were at school here? The overwhelming trend in my 4 years has been horrible one-hit wonders that aren't even currently popular (Afroman? Reel Big giraffe?) or just kind of weird choices (the Black Keys, Passion Pit, hip-hop artists who I forget). The one home-run as far as I'm concerned was P-Funk, although I don't really listen to parliament in my life it was a fun show, although I got peed on when I should have been making out with an absurdly cute girl. (I told you guys that story, right?)

Looking at the history of the event, in the past we had Guided by Voices, Chuck Berry, the Guess Who, Black Eyed Peas, Outkast, Ben Folds, They Might be Giants, Man or Astroman, Warren Zevon, and the Bodeans... what happened? When did we start getting one-hit-wonder hip hop groups? Booo.

I guess some people were into Passion Pit, who were hella hip at the time, and the Black Keys were pretty fun if a bit samey.

They spend so much damn money on this thing, when really what everyone wants is "this is the day you're allowed to be really drunk on campus in the middle of the day."
They used to let people bring in kegs and couches, I wish I'd been here then...

last semester I just drank too many beers right before it, and then fell asleep on my bed with my brand-new girlfriend until after it was over... which I think was all I really needed to get out of that event.
Although the getting-peed-on story is one for the ages.

Yep.  The two I remember were Chuck Berry and The Allman Brothers.  I don't remember who it was my Freshman year.

I don't think I've ever taken an exam in such a state.  Sick as hell, yes, but not drunk/stoned/hungover.  Poor planning is not something I'm ever guilty of.  Driven in to the ground by things beyond my controle?  Yes.

My freshman year, I was complaining in the dorm after dinner that I had to go to an evening astronomy lecture.  A so-called friend said "We'll fix that!" and got out a bottle of Jack Daniels later.  About five shots later, I trundled off to class over his protestations that we had to finish the bottle.

Funniest astronomy lecture ever.

George Clinton puts on one fuck of a show. I think I've mentioned here before that I've been to seen him a couple times, but the one time I saw him in Park City was like the greatest party ever. I "remember" going outside on the patio and puking, which isn't that unusual for me, and then going back in to drink and smoke some more, which is somewhat more unusual for me. I'd say that generally one should never pass up the opportunity to go to a P-Funk show.
